AMG가 4기통 엔진을 장착한 SL 43을 공개했네요. 53과 63의 8기통에 비하면 무게감이 떨어지는걸 부정할 수 없지만 최신 F1 터보 기술을 탑재해 성능을 크게 훼손하지는 않았습니다. 최고출력 381마력을 내고 제로백 4.9초의 성능을 냅니다. 이정도만 되어도 충분히 스포티한 드라이빙을 즐길 수 있죠. 

 

파워트레인만 다를 뿐, 형님들이 가진 혜택을 거의 모두 누릴 수 있는 것도 장점이죠. 가격이 어느정도일지는 모르겠지만 매력은 충분하다고 생각합니다.

Electric exhaust gas turbocharger derived directly from Formula 1™ for the first time in a production vehicle

Affalterbach.  Following the two variants with V8 engines, Mercedes-AMG presents the SL 43 (combined fuel consumption 9.4-8.9 l/100 km, combined CO2 emissions 214-201 g/km),[1] a technically innovative entry-level model of the newly developed roadster icon. Under the bonnet of the open-top 2+2-seater with fabric soft top is an in-line four-cylinder petrol engine with two litres displacement that provides the befitting propulsion. This is the first time in the world that an electric exhaust gas turbocharger is being used in a production vehicle. This technology comes from Formula 1™. The system in the SL 43 is a direct derivative of the development successfully used by the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team for many years in the premier class of motorsport. The new form of turbocharging guarantees particularly spontaneous throttle response across the entire rev range, thereby offering an even more dynamic driving experience while increasing efficiency at the same time. The turbocharger is operated via the 48-volt electrical system, which also feeds the belt-driven starter-generator (RSG). As a result, the Mercedes-AMG SL 43 has an output of 280 kW (381 hp) and a maximum torque of 480 Nm, plus an additional short-term boost of 10 kW (14 hp) from the RSG in certain driving situations. The new entry-level model in the SL family also shines with extensive standard equipment. In addition, numerous options that enhance comfort and safety offer a wide range of possibilities for individualisation.

In the 70 years of its development history, the SL experienced the transformation from a thoroughbred racing car to an open-top luxury sports car - and has long enjoyed legend status, not least for this reason. The new Mercedes-AMG SL now marks another milestone in the model's history. It combines the distinct sportiness of the original SL with the unique luxury and technological excellence of the modern Mercedes-AMG models. As the new entry-level model in the series, the SL 43 is a particularly good example of this. It is the world's first series-produced vehicle to feature an electric exhaust gas turbocharger. This technology comes directly from Formula 1™ and solves the trade-off between a small, fast responding supercharger that nevertheless achieves comparatively low peak power and a large supercharger with high peak power that only responds delayed. With its innovative engine concept, the new entry-level model of the 2+2-seater roadster is aimed more at particularly tech-savvy buyers. With its combination of a comparatively light four-cylinder engine on the front axle and rear-wheel drive, the SL 43 also displays distinctly discrete handling characteristics.

"In its long history, the SL has repeatedly set technological milestones. For example, while the legendary 300 SL Gullwing in 1954 was the world's first series-produced passenger car with direct petrol injection, the new Mercedes-AMG SL 43 is now the very first series-produced vehicle with an electric exhaust gas turbocharger. With this technology, the SL also has an outstanding performance range in its entry-level version. This means that our seemingly smallest SL combines the typical AMG Driving Performance with luxury and comfort at the absolute top level. What's more, with this innovative engine we are undoubtedly also appealing to a wider clientèle", says Philipp Schiemer, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes‑AMG GmbH.

Electric exhaust gas turbocharger improves engine responsiveness

The operating principle of the electric exhaust gas turbocharger is based on the same technology used by the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team. An electric motor around four centimetres thin is integrated directly on the turbocharger shaft between the turbine wheel on the exhaust side and the compressor wheel on the intake side. Electronically controlled, this drives the shaft of the turbocharger directly and thus accelerates the compressor wheel before the exhaust gas stream starts to drive it conventionally.

This significantly improves immediate response from idle speed and across the entire engine speed range. The combustion engine responds even more spontaneously to accelerator pedal input, while the overall driving experience is more dynamic. In addition, the electrification of the turbocharger enables higher torque at low revs. This also increases agility and optimises acceleration from a standstill. Even when the driver takes their foot off the accelerator or applies the brakes, the technology of the electric turbocharger is able to maintain the boost pressure at all times. This ensures so that a continuous immediate response.

The turbocharger, which is operated via the 48-volt on-board electrical system, works at speeds of up to 170,000 rpm, which enables a very high airflow rate. The turbocharger, electric motor and power electronics are connected to the combustion engine's cooling circuit to create an optimal temperature environment at all times. In combination with the internally named M139 two-litre, in-line four-cylinder engine, the innovative technology in the SL 43 produces a rated output of 280 kW (381 hp) at 6750 rpm. The maximum torque of 480 Nm is available between 3250 rpm and 5000 rpm. Depending on the situation, the system also guarantees an additional boost of 10 kW (14 hp) for a short time from the belt-driven starter generator (RSG).

The second-generation RSG also functions as a mild hybrid in the 48-volt on-board electrical system, which in addition to the temporary power boost enables functions such as gliding mode and energy recovery for maximum efficiency. At the same time, the 48-volt technology also increases comfort, as the transitions between the start-stop function and the gliding mode function are almost imperceptible.

AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9G transmission with wet start-off clutch and rear-wheel drive

The four-cylinder engine known as the M139, which has long been used transversely in Mercedes‑AMG compact models without an electric exhaust turbocharger, is positioned longitudinally in the SL 43. In the entry-level model in the SL series, which always features rear-wheel drive, it is also combined with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9G transmission (MCT = Multi-Clutch Transmission) for the first time. A wet start-off clutch replaces the torque converter. It reduces weight and, thanks to its lower inertia, optimises response to accelerator pedal input, especially during spurts and load changes. The elaborately calibrated software ensures extremely short shift times as well as fast multiple downshifts if required. In addition, the intermediate throttle function in the "Sport" and "Sport+" driving modes delivers a particularly emotionally appealing gearshift experience. There is also the RACE START function, which ensures optimal acceleration from a standstill.

The driving performance is up to par: from a standstill, the SL 43 accelerates to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds if required, and the top speed is 275 km/h. In addition to the performance it offers, the entry-level model of the series is also distinguished by comparatively low consumption and emission figures.

Roadster architecture with aluminium composite structure for typical AMG Driving Performance

The new SL of the R232 series is based on a completely new vehicle architecture developed by Mercedes‑AMG. The new dimensional concept allows a 2+2 seating configuration for the first time since 1989 (Mercedes SL model series R129). This makes the new SL even more versatile. The rear seats increase daily practicality and offer space for people up to 1.50 metres tall (up to 1.35 metres with a child seat). If the extra seating is not needed, an insertable draft stop behind the rear seats can protect front-seat occupants from draughts on the back of their necks. Or the second row of seats can be used as additional stowage space and accommodate a golf bag, for example.

Constructed from lightweight aluminium composite, the chassis consists of an aluminium space frame with a self-supporting structure. The design guarantees maximum rigidity and is thus the perfect basis for precise driving dynamics, high comfort, optimal packaging and sporty body proportions. The aim of the body shell architecture is to realise the typical AMG Driving Performance with a focus on lateral and longitudinal dynamics, while at the same time meeting the high standards on comfort and safety.

In the new SL, the intelligent material mix enables the highest possible rigidity at a low weight. The materials used include aluminium, magnesium, fibre composites and steel, from which the windscreen frame is made, for example. This serves as roll-over protection in conjunction with the roll bar system behind the rear seats, which pops up at lightning speed when needed.

Compared to the previous model series, the torsional rigidity of the body shell structure was increased by 18 percent. The transverse rigidity is 50 percent higher than the already outstanding value of the AMG GT Roadster. The longitudinal rigidity is 40 percent higher. The weight of the body shell per se is only around 270 kilograms. Together with the low centre of gravity, the systematic lightweight construction ensures optimal driving dynamics.

Entry-level model with subtle distinguishing features in the exterior design

The exterior design of the SL 43 differs in individual details from the two eight-cylinder models. For example, it has differentiated front and rear aprons as well as round instead of angular double tailpipe trim. The defining features of the SL body design include the long wheelbase, the short overhangs, the long bonnet, the passenger compartment set further back with steeply raked windscreen, and the powerful rear end. This results in the typical SL proportions. They give the roadster its powerful, dynamic appearance - together with the voluminously modelled wheel arches and the large light-alloy wheels that are flush with the outer skin. The SL 43 runs on 19-inch light-alloy wheels as standard. In addition, the same range as for the eight-cylinder models is available as an option: aerodynamically optimised light-alloy wheels with diameters of 20 or 21 inches, which reduce air resistance through low turbulence. Particularly sophisticated are 20-inch wheels with plastic aero rings that save additional weight.

Active aerodynamics to increase dynamics and efficiency

A technical highlight for improving aerodynamics is the AIRPANEL active air control system. The horizontal louvres behind the upper air intake are electronically controlled and can be opened and closed with actuator motors. In this way, the airflow is directed according to demand, thus improving aerodynamic performance.

Normally the louvres are closed - even at top speed. This position reduces air resistance. Only once predefined components have reached certain temperatures and the demand for cooling air is particularly high do the louvres open and allow the maximum amount of cooling air to flow to the heat exchangers. This calls for highly intelligent and fast control.

The same applies to another active component of the aerodynamics: the retractable rear spoiler seamlessly integrated into the vehicle profile. It changes its position depending on the driving status. In doing so, the control software takes into account numerous parameters: It factors the driving speed, the longitudinal and lateral acceleration and the steering speed into the calculation. The spoiler assumes five different angle settings from 80 km/h to either optimise the handling stability or reduce drag.

The optional Aerodynamics Package for the Mercedes-AMG SL 43 includes larger flics on the front and rear bumpers and a larger rear diffuser. This improves both downforce and aerodynamic drag even further. The modified speed thresholds of the rear spoiler and its steeper angle of attack of 26.5 degrees (instead of 22 degrees) in the Dynamic position also contribute to this.

Fabric soft top for less weight and lower centre of gravity

The sportier positioning of the new SL also suggested the decision for an electric soft top instead of the previous metal vario-roof. The 21-kilogram reduction in weight and the resulting lower centre of gravity have a positive effect on driving dynamics and handling. The Z-fold saves space and weight, and makes it possible to dispense with a conventional soft-top compartment cover. The front header bow ensures that the open soft top is flush in its final position. At the same time, the developers were faced with the task of maintaining the high suitability for everyday use and the exemplary quiet-running. The three-layer design consists of a tightly stretched outer shell, a precisely finished roof liner and an acoustic mat made of high-quality 450 g/m² PES fleece inserted in between.

Opening and closing takes only about 15 seconds and is possible up to a speed of 60 km/h. The soft top is operated using the switch panel in the centre console or the multimedia touch screen, on which an animation shows how the process is progressing.

Interior with "hyperanalogue" cockpit and standard luxury seats

The interior of the Mercedes-AMG SL 43 also features an exciting combination of analogue geometry and the digital world - known as "hyperanalogue". This is exemplified by the fully digital instrument cluster, which is integrated into a three-dimensional visor. The standard MBUX infotainment system offers a choice of several specific display styles and different modes. The symmetrical instrument panel is designed as a powerful wing and structured into an upper and lower section. The highlight are the four galvanised turbine nozzles. Their surfaces merge into the instrument panel in the form of powerful power domes. The lower section of the instrument panel evolves fluidly from the centre console, seamlessly connecting the two elements.

Despite symmetry, the cockpit design creates a clear focus on the driver: The high-resolution 12.3-inch LCD screen of the instrument cluster is not designed to be free-standing, but integrated into a high-tech visor that prevents reflections caused by sunlight. In order to avoid disturbing light reflections caused by different sun positions when the soft top is open, the tilt of the touch screen on the centre console can also be electrically adjusted from 12 degrees to 32 degrees.

The latest generation MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) is intuitive to operate and capable of learning. It offers a host of functional content and the operating structure of the second-generation MBUX system, which debuted in the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class. In the SL, extensive AMG-specific content in five display styles is added. Exclusive menu items such as "AMG Performance" or "AMG TRACK PACE" also emphasise the sporty character.

The SL 43 is equipped as standard with a wide range of electrically and manually adjustable luxury seats in a combination of ARTICO man-made leather and fabric. Seat covers in leather, NAPPA leather and NAPPA AMG leather are optionally available, as are AMG sports seats and AMG Performance seats with their sculptural design. The optionally available upholstery in MANUFAKTUR macchiato beige/titanium grey or in MANUFAKTUR truffle brown/black ensures a particularly exclusive touch. The AMG Performance seats can also be upholstered in a combination of nappa leather and DINAMICA microfibre with yellow or red decorative topstitching.

In addition to the standard high-gloss black, the trim elements and centre console are also available in aluminium or carbon and in MANUFAKTUR chrome black. The AMG Performance steering wheel with optional steering wheel heater is available in nappa leather and nappa leather/MICROCUT microfibre.

Newly developed chassis with multi-link front axle and innovative lightweight construction measures

As standard, the SL 43 is equipped with a newly developed AMG RIDE CONTROL steel suspension with particularly powerful aluminium shock absorbers and lightweight coil springs. The new SL is the first production vehicle ever from Mercedes-AMG to feature a multi-link front axle with five links arranged entirely within the rim. This significantly improves the kinematics. At the rear axle, a 5-link design likewise controls the wheels.

To reduce unsprung masses, all suspension links, steering knuckles and wheel carriers on the front and rear axles of the new SL are made of forged aluminium. The multi-link concept controls each wheel with the least amount of elastic movement. The high camber and track stability not only enables high cornering speeds, it also provides the driver with optimal road contact at the high cornering limit. This is reflected in excellent lateral dynamics and driving stability at high speeds as well as in the good-natured reaction to external influences such as crosswinds, bumps or jumps in friction coefficients.

The lightweight coil springs are a new development: special tempering allowed their weight to be lowered without reducing their performance. In the manufacturing process, the spring pad is glued onto the spring for the first time. This firm connection prevents wear and tear caused by dirt such as sand over the course of a vehicle's life. The spring does not corrode over the life cycle, and the maximum component load can consequently be increased at less weight. This saves around 0.2 kilograms per spring.

Another lightweight construction measure concerns the torsion bar stabilisers on the front and rear axles of the SL 43. Thanks to a variable wall thickness, their weight can be reduced. The maximum wall thickness is now only used where it is required due to the maximum load, in this case in the area of the rubber mounts.

The latest generation of AMG adaptive adjustable damping is available as an option for the SL 43. The suspension control unit uses data analysis - including acceleration and wheel travel sensors - to adjust the damping force for each wheel in a few milliseconds to suit the situation. The driver can pre-select the basic set-up via the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving modes: at the touch of a button, the handling characteristics change, for example, from full dynamics in "Sport+" mode to smooth cruising in the "Comfort" setting. In addition, the tuning can be adjusted in three stages independently of the driving modes via a dedicated button.

AMG high-performance composite brake system for short braking distances

The newly developed AMG high-performance composite brake system guarantees excellent deceleration values and precise control. It impresses with short braking distances, sensitive response and last but not least with high stability and durability - even under extreme stress. Comfort functions include Hill Start Assist as well as pre-filling and dry braking in wet conditions. When the ignition is switched off and the vehicle is stationary, the parking position "P" is also activated. When starting off, the electric parking brake is released automatically.

The composite brake discs are particularly light: Driving dynamics and turn-in behaviour benefit from the reduced unsprung masses. Brake disc (made of cast steel) and brake disc pot (made of aluminium) are now connected with special pins. This design saves space, which is used for even better brake cooling. The directional perforation is also new: In addition to the weight saving and better heat dissipation, this solution scores points with a faster response in wet conditions as well as better pad cleaning after braking.

Optional rear-axle steering combines agility and stability

The Mercedes-AMG SL 43 can be equipped with active rear-axle steering (HAL) as an option. Depending on the speed, the rear wheels steer either in the opposite direction (up to 100 km/h) or in the same direction (faster than 100 km/h) as the front wheels. The system thus enables both agile and stable driving characteristics. The front-wheel steering ratio is more direct, making it easier to steer the vehicle at the limit with less steering effort.

Six driving modes and AMG DYNAMICS: from comfortable to dynamic

The five AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving modes "Slippery", "Comfort", "Sport", "Sport +" and "Individual", as well as the "RACE" mode included in the optional AMG DYNAMIC PLUS Package, enable a wide spread of vehicle characteristics from comfortable to dynamic. The distinct driving modes offer an individual driving experience, precisely tailored to different driving conditions. As a feature of the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving modes, the SL models also feature AMG DYNAMICS. This integrated vehicle dynamics control expands the stabilising functions of ESP® with interventions that enhance agility in the steering characteristic and in ESP® additional functions. When cornering at speed, for example, brief braking intervention at the inner rear wheel generates a defined yawing moment around the vertical axis for responsive and precise turn-in.

SL equipment programme: great variety for an individual look

With the details of its extensive standard equipment as well as many additional options available, the Mercedes-AMG SL 43 offers a broad individualisation spectrum for a wide range of customer wishes - from sporty and dynamic to luxuriously elegant. This includes twelve paint finishes including the two exclusive SL colours hyper blue metallic and MANUFAKTUR monza grey magno, three roof colour variants and several new wheel designs.

Three exterior design packages are available to sharpen the look further and make it more elegant or more dynamic.

  • The AMG Exterior Chrome Package contains elegant high-gloss chrome accents on the front apron, the side sill trim and the rear.
  • In the AMG Night Package, selected exterior elements are finished in high-gloss black, such as the front splitter, the side sill trims, the mirror caps and the trim element in the rear diffuser. Added to this are darkened tailpipe trims. Depending on the chosen paint finish, this results in striking contrasts or flowing transitions.
  • The AMG Night Package II includes additional elements in high-gloss black, including radiator grille, typography and Mercedes star at the rear.
  • With the AMG Exterior Carbon Package, lightweight components made of carbon fibre evoke the SL's motorsport history. The carbon parts include the front splitter and the flics in the front bumper as well as the trim strip in the side member trim. Furthermore, there are tailpipe trims in high-gloss black and the trim strip in the diffuser in carbon or high-gloss black.

AMG DYNAMIC PLUS Package for maximum driving pleasure

The AMG DYNAMIC PLUS Package, which combines numerous high-performance components, is optionally available for the SL 43:

  • Dynamic AMG engine mounts connect the engine more rigidly or more flexibly to the body, depending on the driving situation. In every driving situation, this results in the best possible balance between driving dynamics and comfort.
  • The electronically controlled AMG limited-slip rear differential distributes the required power to the wheels even more promptly and precisely during dynamic cornering and rapid acceleration, thus guaranteeing maximum traction.
  • The "RACE" driving mode delivers race track performance at the touch of a button with even more spontaneous engine response and a more direct accelerator pedal characteristic. Selectable as an additional driving mode via the AMG steering wheel buttons.
  • The lowering by ten millimetres lowers the vehicle's centre of gravity and additionally stabilises the vehicle.
  • The yellow-painted AMG brake callipers visually underline the increased driving dynamics potential.

Driving assistance systems and MBUX: intelligent helpers in the background

With the aid of numerous sensors, cameras and radar, the driving assistance systems, some of which are optional, monitor the traffic and surroundings of the new SL 43. If necessary, the intelligent helpers can intervene at lightning speed. As in the current generations of the Mercedes C-Class and S-Class, the driver is supported by several new and enhanced systems. This is done in everyday situations, for example, by helping with speed adaptation, distance control, steering and lane changes. This makes it easier to react to impending collisions. The functioning of the systems is visualised by a new display concept in the instrument cluster.

The new assistance display in the instrument cluster shows comprehensibly and transparently how the driving assistance systems work in a full-screen view. The driver can see their car, lanes, lane markings and other road users such as cars, trucks and two-wheelers in an abstracted 3D way there. The system status and operation of the assistants are visualised in this depiction of the surroundings. The new, animated assistance display is based on a 3D scene generated in real time. This dynamic, high-quality representation makes the operation of the driving assistance systems transparent as an augmented reality driving experience.

Numerous connectivity services available

The MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) infotainment system enables extensive operating options and many digital services from Mercedes me connect. The strengths include the intuitive operating concept via touch screen or touch control buttons on the steering wheel, Smartphone Integration of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as hands-free operation via Bluetooth connection and Digital Radio (DAB and DAB+). In conjunction with MBUX, customers already have access to connectivity services such as Live Traffic Information. Mercedes me connect makes the new SL altogether more intelligent: Additional functions can be used before and after the journey or while on the road. All that is required is to link the roadster to a Mercedes me account in the Mercedes me Portal and accept the Terms of Use. Thanks to navigation with Live Traffic Information and Car-to-X communication, the customer drives with real-time traffic data. This way, traffic jams can be avoided efficiently and valuable time can be saved. Networked vehicles exchange information about traffic events by means of car-to-x communication.

메르세데스-AMG가 G클래스의 고성능 버전인 G63 기반의 에디션 55(Edition 55)를 공개했다. 브랜드 설립 55주년을 기념하는 의미다. 

디자인 패키지 성격이 크기에 V8 4.0 트윈 터보 585마력 엔진과 9단 AMG 스피드 시프트 TCT 9G 등 파워트레인은 변함이 없다. 

대신, 스타일에 차이를 두어 의미를 새겼다. G 마누팍투르와 흑요석 블랙 메탈릭의 오팔라이트 화이트 컬러를 추가했다. 옆구리에 전용 AMG 데칼을 붙이고 22인치 휠에 매트한 탄탈룸 그레이 페인트를 칠했다. AMG 로고가 새겨진 실버 크롬 연료 필러 캡도 포인트다.

Affalterbach.  AMG - for 55 years now, these three letters have stood for top automotive performance, exclusivity and high driving dynamics worldwide. The G‑Class has enjoyed a unique position in the AMG portfolio for over two decades and is thus our king of off-road performance. Its cult status makes it the ideal ambassador to ring in the 55th anniversary of the sports car and performance brand - with the special edition Mercedes‑AMG G 63 "Edition 55" (WLTP: combined fuel consumption 16.0 l/100 km, combined CO2 emissions 363 g/km)[1]. Particularly exquisite equipment details underline Mercedes‑AMG's claim to offer customers the highest possible individuality and exclusivity. The Mercedes‑AMG G 63 "Edition 55" is available in obsidian black metallic or G manufaktur opalite white bright paint. The colours on both sides of the vehicle are coordinated with the AMG emblem and the suggested AMG rhombus. Exciting contrasts are provided by the 22‑inch AMG forged wheels in a cross-spoke design with a matt tantalum grey paint finish and a high-sheen rim flange, as well as the AMG Night Package and the AMG Night package II. The fuel filler cap in silver chrome with AMG lettering also bears witness to great attention to detail.

 

The interior is characterised by the contrast of black and red. Stainless steel door sill trims with red illuminated AMG lettering welcome the driver. To match, the black AMG floor mats made of high-quality velour feature red contrasting stitching and "Edition 55" lettering woven in red. The AMG Performance steering wheel in DINAMICA microfibre also commemorates the anniversary with the "AMG" and "55" badges, making the special model an exclusive collector's item. The AMG seats in specific design are upholstered in two-tone nappa leather in classic red/black. The exclusive ambience of the interior is rounded off by the AMG trim elements in matt carbon.

The scope of delivery includes a customised AMG Indoor Car Cover. With its breathable outer skin made of tear-resistant synthetic fibre fabric and antistatic inner fabric made of flannel, it protects the vehicle in the garage from dust and scratches.

The exclusive special model can now be ordered with the "AMG Edition 55" equipment package at a surcharge of 17,850 Euro[2].

 

55 years of the Mercedes-AMG success story

Founded in 1967 by engineers Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher, the company has continued to build on its position as a highly successful performance and sports car brand through numerous successes in motorsport and the development of unique road cars. Today the Affalterbach-based company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Mercedes‑Benz Group AG and is the Group's sporting spearhead. For each of the now more than 2000 employees the focus is on the brand promise "Driving Performance", which unites the core strengths of AMG: cutting-edge technology and a passion for dynamic, emotively appealing products.

The current Mercedes‑AMG portfolio comprises more than 50 vehicles with a power range from 225 kW (306 hp) to 620 kW (843 hp) of system power in the first performance hybrid from Affalterbach, the Mercedes‑AMG GT 63 S E PERFORMANCE (WLTP: Fuel consumption weighted, combined 7.9 l/100 km; CO2 emissions weighted, combined 180 g/km; Power consumption weighted, combined 12.0 kWh/100 km)[3]. The selection ranges from performance vehicles in various body styles to completely independently developed sports cars such as the Mercedes‑AMG GT 4‑Door model and the new Mercedes‑AMG SL. The range of powertrains has also been continuously developed in line with market requirements and customer wishes and currently offers efficiency-optimised combustion engines with four, six or eight cylinders. In addition, Mercerdes‑AMG is consistently pursuing the path of the Future of Driving Performance: under the label E PERFORMANCE, performance hybrids are offered with an independent drive layout and technology from Formula 1. The portfolio also includes all-electric AMG derivatives based on the Group's own EVA2 platform. In the near future, completely independent battery-electric AMG models will also follow, which will be based on the new electrical architecture (AMG.EA) which has been developed completely in-house.

With 145,979 vehicles delivered in 2021 and growth of 16.7 percent, Mercedes‑AMG has started the anniversary year with a record figure.

 

Over two decades of the high-performance G‑Class

The first production model of an AMG variant of the G‑Class was launched in 1999 to mark the 20th anniversary of the off-road legend. The G 55 AMG marked the beginning of a new, highly successful chapter in G‑Class history. The 5.5‑litre naturally aspirated eight‑cylinder engine with three‑valve technology and dual ignition produced 260 kW (354 hp) and had a maximum torque of 525 Nm at 3000 rpm. In 2002, the G 63 AMG set new standards. It was the first time a twelve-cylinder engine had been used in the G‑Class. The 6.3‑litre naturally aspirated V12 engine produced 326 kW (444 hp) of power and a sumptuous 620 Nm of maximum torque. The most powerful G‑Class at the time was custom-built at the AMG Manufaktur in Affalterbach at the exclusive request of the customer. This was followed in 2004 by the G 55 AMG with a V8 supercharged engine, an even more powerful high-performance model with 350 kW (476 hp). Another highlight in 2012 was the premiere of the G 65 AMG. Its 450 kW (612 hp) V12 engine achieved 1000 Nm of torque.

The current Mercedes‑AMG G 63 consistently continues the success story. Its unique position among performance SUVs is underpinned by the powerful drive, the AMG RIDE CONTROL suspension, the AMG-specific driving programs and the luxurious interior. The AMG 4.0‑litre V8 biturbo engine with 430 kW (585 hp) and 850 Nm maximum torque, a 40:60 ratio all-wheel drive with three differential locks, the extremely fast-shifting nine-speed automatic transmission, the double-wishbone independent front suspension and the adaptive adjustable damping form the basis for the driving performance characteristic of AMG on and off surfaced roads.

Extensive model upgrades enhance driving dynamics, comfort and individuality.

The 2023 Mercedes-AMG GT 63 and Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S will receive technical and visual upgrades. In addition to design modifications, the standard AMG RIDE CONTROL+ based on Air Body Control suspension is improved. With the facelift, the successful AMG GT 4-Door Coupe is now more customizable than ever, which further strengthens its position as the perfect combination of AMG-developed dynamics with everyday usability. In addition, an extended choice of wheels, upholstery, trim and exterior colors are available for greater individualization. The Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe V8 models will arrive at US dealerships later this year.

At first glance, the facelifted eight-cylinder models of the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe can be recognized by the individually designed front fascia, which was launched with the new top model of the series, the GT 63 S E PERFORMANCE. It now appears even more streamlined and blends homogeneously into the dynamic design of the overall vehicle. The outer air intakes are wider and more pointed towards the center of the car. The airflow is now channeled through three vertical fins to the radiators.

"In the 4-Door Coupe segment, the Mercedes-AMG GT offers the perfect balance between everyday practicality and sportiness. On the one hand, it is the superior Gran Turismo for the whole family and, on the other, the current record holder on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife in the Executive-cars category. As the fastest and most powerful medical car in Formula 1® history, the GT 63 S is also celebrating its debut this season and is ready to provide rapid emergency care with maximum race track performance. The diversity is also reflected in the wide range of drive options. In addition to six- and eight-cylinder engines, we also offer the first AMG hybrid in the E PERFORMANCE drive layout in this model series. To further sharpen our profile as a Performance Luxury brand, we have also expanded the options for individualization, thus offering our customers an even higher level of lifestyle and exclusivity," emphasizes Philipp Schiemer, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

With the facelift of the six-cylinder models, the exterior colors Starling Blue Metallic and Starling Blue Magno were newly offered. These are also available for the V8 models. This gives the customer a choice of a total of four matte paints, five metallic shades and two solid colors. The expressive exterior design can be further accentuated with the new AMG Night Package II or a combination of the Night Package and AMG Exterior Carbon Fiber Package, for example. New colors and trims have also been added to the range for the interior, including the AMG Performance steering wheel.

The standard-fit AMG RIDE CONTROL+ based on Air Body Control suspension features adaptive, electronically controlled adjustable damping. This new damping system uses two pressure limiting valves. These continuously variable control valves, located outside the damper, allow the damping force to be adjusted even more precisely to different driving conditions and drive programs: one valve controls the rebound damping, i.e. the force that occurs when the wheel rebounds, and the other controls the compression damping when the wheel compresses. The rebound and compression stages are controlled independently of each other. This technology makes it possible to increase comfort on the one hand, but on the other also to make the driving dynamics even sportier. As a result, passengers are almost completely shielded from uneven road surfaces.

The suspension control unit analyzes data – including information from the acceleration and wheel path sensors – to adjust the damping force for each wheel in a few milliseconds to suit the situation. The AMG development engineers were able to significantly increase the spread between sportiness and comfort, among other things, by widening the gap between the minimum and maximum damping force characteristics and by providing even greater flexibility in map design. By using the two adjustment valves, the damper is able to provide damping force adjustment across the full range of wheel vibrations. Due to the special design of the valves, the damper reacts quickly and sensitively to changing road surfaces and driving conditions.

The driver can preselect the basic set-up via the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive programs. At the touch of a button, the handling characteristics change, for example, from full dynamics in "Sport+" mode to smooth cruising in the "Comfort" setting. In addition, the tuning can be adjusted in three stages independently of the drive programs via a dedicated button. 

The MANUFAKTUR label stands for the highest degree of individuality and luxury with selected materials that are predominantly processed by hand. For AMG GT 4-Door V8 models, this includes exclusive paintwork and high-quality interiors. A range of additional colors in the AMG GT portfolio has grown and now includes three MANUFAKTUR Signature Paint finishes, including MANUFAKTUR Arabian Grey, MANUFAKTUR Cashmere White Magno and MANUFAKTUR China Blue. Further additions to the MANUFAKTUR paint lineup will be available in subsequent years. For the interior, thanks to the MANUFAKTUR range, there are three additional choices with exclusive nappa leather in diamond quilting, including a two-tone AMG Performance steering wheel and AMG high-pile floor mats with embroidered AMG lettering have been added. Additional options for individualization be added in subsequent years.

Affalterbach.  With the new EQS 53 4MATIC+ (combined WLTP power consumption: 23.4-21.1 kWh/100 km; CO2 emissions combined, WLTP: 0 g/km; electric range, WLTP: 529-586 km)[1] Mercedes-AMG is embarking on the all-electric future of Driving Performance. The first battery-electric AMG production model is based on the Mercedes-EQ architecture for luxury and executive-class vehicles. It thus fits seamlessly into the group-wide electric strategy. The luxury saloon with an output of up to 560 kW has been newly developed or refined in Affalterbach in all performance-related areas. It impresses with brand-specific features wherever the customer can experience them directly: from the technology to the exterior/interior design and the emotive vehicle sound.

"The AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+ is the first all-electric ambassador in the performance segment, made in Affalterbach. At the heart of the new Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+ is its performance-oriented drive concept with two motors. The powerful electric powertrain with one motor each at the front and rear axles has fully-variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive, which optimally transmits the drive power to the asphalt in all driving conditions. The basic version achieves a maximum total output of 484 kW (658 hp), with a maximum motor torque of 950 Nm. With the AMG DYNAMIC PLUS package, which is available as an option, the maximum output increases to up to 560 kW (761 hp) in RACE START mode with boost function. The maximum motor torque is then up to 1020 Nm.

In this case the new Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+ accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 3.4 seconds with a battery charge level of at least 75 percent. The top speed is limited to 250 km/h with the optional AMG DYNAMIC PLUS package. In the base version the AMG EQS accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 3.8 seconds (minimum 30 percent battery charge). Its maximum speed is limited to 220 km/.

AMG SOUND EXPERIENCE: emotional sound spectrum for a unique driving experience

Mercedes-AMG models have always stood for emotionality. The vehicle sound has always been an important part of the typical AMG driving experience. This will continue to be the case in the future. The EQS 53 4MATIC+ brings a new, powerfully sonorous sound to electric driving. Its sound system uses special speakers, a bass actuator and a sound generator to create a special sound experience in two versions: "Authentic" or, as an option, "Performance". This exclusive AMG SOUND EXPERIENCE is generated inside and out with a tonality and intensity to match the current driving status, the selected driving mode or the driver's wishes.

AMG-specific electric motors for perfectly balanced Driving Performance

The AMG-specific electric motors at the front and rear axles are permanently excited synchronous motors (PSM). The decided emphasis on performance is already evident in the output and torque values. In addition, the Mercedes-AMG electric motors are characterised by an optimum balance of enhanced power, efficiency and noise comfort. Among other things, this is ensured by new windings, stronger currents and new actuation via inverters with specially developed software. This allows higher rotational speeds and thus more power, setting standards especially in acceleration and top speed.

The electric motor at the rear axle of the EQS 53 4MATIC+ is particularly powerful. A major reason for this is the six-phase design based on two windings with three phases each. The stators with move-in winding ensure a particularly powerful magnetic field.

Added to this is the highly resilient thermal concept, which allows repeated acceleration manoeuvres with consistently high performance. The centrepiece of the sophisticated design is the so-called water lance in the shaft of the rotor, which cools it. Other AMG-specific cooling elements in the cooling circuit are special ribs on the stator and the needle-shaped pin-fin structure on the inverter, which is made of high-performance ceramics. In addition, there is the additional transmission oil cooler which also increases efficiency during cold driving, as it warms the transmission oil as needed.

Intelligent recuperation for efficient energy recovery

The new Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+ sets standards not only with its highly dynamic power delivery when accelerating, but also with efficient energy recuperation when braking. The recuperation output is up to 300 kW[2].

The driver can adjust the level of recuperation in three stages via switches on the steering wheel, and receive situation-related support from the ECO Assistant. Combined braking can take place until standstill. With the help of the optional DRIVE PILOT, deceleration is automatic in response to detected vehicles ahead until they come to a standstill, for example at traffic lights.

New battery generation with a capacity of 107.8 kWh

The new Mercedes-AMG 53 4MATIC+ is equipped with a powerful 400 volt battery manufactured using the latest lithium-ion technology. A major advance in sustainability has been achieved in the cell chemistry: The cobalt content is reduced to ten percent, the optimised active material consists of nickel, cobalt and manganese in a ratio of 8:1:1.

The high-voltage battery has a usable energy content of 107.8 kWh. One special technical feature is the AMG-specific wiring, which is adapted to the high performance capacity. The battery management system is also configured specifically for AMG. In the Sport and Sport+ driving modes the focus is on performance, in Comfort mode on operating range. The new generation of batteries is characterised by a significantly higher energy density compared to previous developments. It also has a higher charging capacity. Another new feature is the possibility to install updates for the battery management system over the air.

Shorter charging times thanks to intelligent thermal management

Another advantage of the new battery generation is the significantly shorter charging times. As with the sister model from Mercedes-EQ, the battery can be charged with up to 200 kW at quick-charging stations with direct current. In this case, power for up to another 300 kilometres (WLTP) can be "topped up" after just over 19 minutes[3]. Thanks to the onboard charger, the electrified AMG can be conveniently charged at home or at public charging stations with up to 22 kW (optional) of alternating current. In Japan, bidirectional charging will also be possible, i.e. charging in both directions. In addition, there are intelligent charging programmes that can be activated automatically depending on the location. Functions such as battery-friendly charging make charging even more efficient.

The efficient thermal management also plays a part in shortening charging times. If the intelligent navigation with Electric Intelligence is activated, the battery is preheated or cooled as needed while driving, so as to reach the optimum temperature for fast charging at the charging point. The desired temperature range of the battery is achieved with the aid of the cooling circuit and a PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) booster heater integrated into it.

The battery design aims to ensure the optimum battery operating temperature under all operating conditions. The aluminium extrusions of the battery frame have defined cavities through which the coolant flows. All in all, the intelligent temperature and charging management ensures that high charging currents can be maintained for a long time.

The battery also stands out for its durability. The ECO Charging function makes a significant contribution to this: the intelligent control reduces the battery load during charging, and thus slows down the natural ageing process of the battery. Customers can also benefit from "charge interruption" function: the charging process can be paused at freely selectable times so as to use cheaper off-peak electricity at a later time, for example. The battery certificate stands for the long service life of the high-voltage batteries. It is valid up to a term of ten years or up to 250,000 kilometres.

Fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive

The power of the battery-powered motors is brought to the road by the standard AMG Performance 4MATIC+ fully variable all-wheel drive system. The system continuously distributes the drive torques between the front and rear axles, depending on the driving situation: compared to a mechanical all-wheel drive system, the electro-specific system ensures a significantly faster response. The torque is checked 160 times per second and adjusted if necessary. The torque distribution depends on the selected driving mode: in "Comfort" mode the focus is on maximum efficiency, while in "Sport" and "Sport+" the torque is more rear-biased in the interests of greater lateral dynamics.

Tyres developed specifically for the higher performance level

The high driving-dynamics potential and the performance-oriented character of the Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+ is also taken into account by the tyres developed together with MICHELIN. In order to do this the teams of developers at Mercedes-AMG and the French tyre manufacturer tailored the MICHELIN Pilot Sport EV specially designed for sports cars with electric drive to the requirements of the first all-electric AMG series model in a targeted manner. The profile and the rubber mix are geared to the high torque and the powerful acceleration forces and ensure a long life. The tyre received top marks and the coveted A-Label for its low rolling resistance (important for a long range) and the very good wet adhesion properties. Thought has also been given to comfort: a polyurethane foam which is integrated into the tyres considerably reduces driving noise.

AMG RIDE CONTROL+ suspension with adaptive adjustable damping

Like the EQS from Mercedes-EQ, the suspension of the new Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+ features a four-link axle at the front and a multi-link axle at the rear. AMG engineers have specifically improved the components and configured them to meet the special requirements of AMG customers. This applies to ride comfort as well as driving dynamics. The AMG RIDE CONTROL+ suspension is an air suspension system combined with adaptive, electronically controlled adjustable damping together with rear-axle steering as standard.

The suspension components that have an influence on the driving dynamics are new and AMG-specific. This applies to the rear axle beam, for example, which the engineers in Affalterbach have completely redeveloped. The subframe and motor mountings are also completely new developments, and exclusive to the AMG models. This also applies e.g. to the revised transverse stabilisers, as well as the wheel carriers and control arms, which are derived from other AMG Performance models.

As in the AMG GT 4-Door Coupé, the standard air suspension of the EQS 53 4MATIC+ uses two pressure relief valves. These continuously variable control valves located outside the damper allow the damping force to be adjusted even more precisely to different driving conditions and driving modes: a valve controls the rebound damping, i.e. the force generated when the wheel rebounds.  The other controls the compression damping when the wheel compresses. The rebound and compression stages are controlled independently of each other. This technology makes it possible to increase comfort on the one hand, but also to make the driving dynamics even sportier on the other hand.

The suspension control unit analyses data - including data from the acceleration and wheel path sensors - to adjust the damping force for each wheel in a few milliseconds to suit the situation. The AMG developers were able to significantly increase the spread between sportiness and comfort. Among other things, by widening the spread between minimum and maximum damping force characteristics, as well as even greater flexibility in characteristic mapping. By using the two adjustment valves, the damper is able to provide damping force adjustment across the full range of wheel vibrations. Thanks to the special design of the valves, the damper reacts quickly and sensitively to changing road surfaces and driving conditions.

Rear-axle steering as standard

The Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+ is equipped with rear-axle steering as standard. The steering angle of up to 9 degrees greatly enhances the agile handling of the large saloon. The turning circle is 11.5 metres – this is compact-class level.

The interaction between front-axle and rear-axle steering is designed to achieve agile responses with little steering effort when driving in town or on country roads. At speeds below 60 km/h, the rear wheels steer in the opposite direction to the front wheels. This makes the AMG EQS highly manoeuvrable, light-footed and nimble. The effect is particularly positive when turning off, changing direction quickly and manoeuvring slowly.

From a speed of more than 60 km/h, the rear wheels steer in the same direction as the front wheels. The resulting virtually extended wheelbase offers increased handling stability and driving safety at high speeds, and during fast lane changes or sudden evasive manoeuvres.

For an individual driving experience: AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving modes

The driving characteristics of the Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+ can be altered by the driver at the touch of a button, to suit the situation or personal preferences. This is made possible by the five AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving modes "Slippery", "Comfort", "Sport", "Sport+" and "Individual". The driving modes cover a wide spectrum, from high comfort to pronounced sportiness. Important parameters such as drive and performance characteristics, suspension settings, steering, AMG Dynamics and AMG SOUND EXPERIENCE are modified to suit the selected driving mode. The maximum drive power can be called up in the Sport+ driving mode (or with kick-down).

The driver can also pre-select the basic suspension setup via the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving modes: at the touch of a button, the driving behaviour varies from maximum dynamics in "Sport+" mode to smooth gliding in the "Comfort" setting, for example. In addition, the tuning can be adjusted in three stages independently of the driving modes via a dedicated button.

Depending on the driving mode, the central drive control unit automatically activates different de-rating and cooling strategies: in "Sport" and "Sport+", the cooling system is activated sooner and the cooling capacity is increased to maintain delivered power for longer. The driver has the option of even more driving pleasure - for example on enclosed circuits - by using the ESP OFF function.

AMG high-performance composite braking system

The Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+ is not only a top performer when it comes to driving dynamics, but also in handling safety. This is amply demonstrated by the AMG high-performance composite brake system with six-piston brake callipers and brake discs measuring 415x33 millimetres at the front, and single-piston brake callipers and brake discs measuring 378x22 millimetres at the rear. The optional AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system uses even larger brake discs measuring 440x40 millimetres at the front.  Another high-tech feature is the additional i-Booster function. This ensures that the braking system combines electric recuperation with the hydraulic brake in a highly efficient manner. For that really authentic driving experience, the i-Booster is specially tuned to the typical AMG pedal feel and the larger AMG braking system.

AMG SOUND EXPERIENCE: unique sound experience with a wide bandwidth

With the AMG SOUND EXPERIENCE, the performance and sports car brand is giving a new voice to electric mobility - a soundtrack that emotionally enhances the dynamic driving experience. Like the driving modes, the acoustic composition has a wide bandwidth: in the standard basic version "Authentic", the customer can regulate the powerful, sonorous sound and its intensity depending on the driving status and the selected driving mode. The AMG-typical driving sounds are generated with the help of additional hardware. This includes special speakers, a bass actuator and a sound generator.

Another option for even more individuality: Using the AMG steering wheel buttons or the central display, the driver can select the sound characteristics "Balanced", "Sport" and "Powerful" in any driving mode. During RACE START, the vehicle produces a unique sound to match the dynamic acceleration.

The AMG DYNAMIC PLUS package also includes the AMG SOUND EXPERIENCE "Performance", which creates an even more emotional soundscape. In addition to the driving sounds, it also includes most of the so-called event sounds - suitable sounds for all vehicle functions that emit a sound. This includes unlocking and locking the vehicle, as well as starting and stopping the drive system. The programme even simulates the click of the indicators, because many drivers are unwilling to do without the familiar sound. A brand new feature is the AMG-specific Event sound, which is heard when the driver enters the vehicle. The event sounds can be deactivated at any time via the multimedia system settings - separately for the exterior and interior.

Exterior design with characteristic AMG features

With its one-bow lines and cab-forward design with hatchback, the AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+ is clearly distinguishable from vehicles with combustion engines at first glance. The design philosophy is reflected in generously modelled surfaces, reduced joints and seamless transitions. The exterior design also picks up on characteristic AMG features and transfers them into the all-electric age. The results include an unmistakable, brand-typical appearance paired with maximum aerodynamic efficiency. The front view with DIGITAL LIGHT headlamps as standard is characterised by the AMG-specific black panel grille with hot-stamped vertical struts in chrome, integrated Mercedes star and "AMG" lettering. The distinctive design idiom continues in the front bumper, which is painted in the vehicle colour. This is contrasted by the front apron in the typical AMG A-wing design, which is painted in high-gloss black and features chrome trim.

Maximum aerodynamic efficiency with a Cd value from 0.23

The EQS 53 4MATIC+ achieves a very good wind resistance value from 0.23. finishing aerodynamic touch ensures maximum efficiency, especially during dynamic driving at a high speed. To achieve this, AMG's aero-specialists carried out a large number of wind tunnel and flow tests and optimised both the basic shape and certain design features. These include:

  • Front splitter in high-gloss black with chrome trim and also flics and fins on the air intakes, with AIR CURTAINS on the left and right in high-gloss black with chrome trim
  • AMG side sill panels in high-gloss black
  • Rear apron in the body colour with aerodynamically optimised diffuser with six longitudinal fins
  • Larger rear spoiler (compared to AMG Line), to improve driving dynamics: Rear lift is reduced without increasing drag
  • 21- or 22-inch AMG light-alloy wheels in Aero or Heritage design, all aerodynamically optimised

The side air intakes contribute to the vehicle's efficiency: the air curtain effect concentrates the airflow and sends it ahead of the front wheels at high speed. In this way the front wheels are aerodynamically shielded, which reduces air resistance and thus has a positive effect on operating range.

Interior design with a particularly sporty touch

The interior is also dominated by style-defining AMG features. Here the EQS 53 4MATIC+ offers a sporty ambience, thanks to AMG seats with individual graphics and special seat covers in ARTICO man-made leather with MICROCUT microfibre and red contrasting topstitching. Alternatively, seat upholstery in nappa leather is optionally available, also with AMG-specific seat graphics.

In addition, there are numerous other features that underline the distinctive style of the interior:

  • Instrument panel and beltlines in space grey ARTICO man-made leather with NEOTEX grain and red topstitching
  • Door centre panels and also transition from centre console to dashboard in black MICROCUT microfibre with red topstitching
  • AMG performance steering wheel in nappa leather, with flattened lower section, perforated in the grip area with silver-coloured aluminium paddles for setting various recuperation levels, in addition to standard AMG steering wheel buttons
  • AMG sports pedals
  • AMG floor mats and door sill trims with "AMG" lettering (illuminated with interchangeable cover)

Hyperscreen with AMG-specific functions and displays for the MBUX infotainment system

The Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+ is equipped with the innovative MBUX Hyperscreen as standard. This large, curved screen unit extends from A-pillar to A-pillar. Three screens sit under a glass cover and appear to merge into one. With adaptive software, MBUX adapts completely to its user and offers personalised suggestions for numerous infotainment, comfort and vehicle functions. With the so-called zero layer, the most important applications are always displayed situationally and contextually on the top level in the field of vision. In Europe and China, dynamic content is also permitted on the passenger display while driving. Unrestricted viewing of films, text messages or presentations, pus internet surfing, are therefore possible. This is made possible by the so-called "blanking function", which prevents the driver from seeing the content.

Compared to its sister models from Mercedes-EQ, MBUX in the EQS 53 4MATIC+ offers a range of additional functions that emphasise the high-performance character of the sporty top model. This is particularly true of the distinctive displays in the instrument cluster, as well as the multimedia display and the head-up display. Quick access to the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving modes is provided by the corresponding direct-entry button in the centre console.

AMG DYNAMIC PLUS package with dynamic driving extras

The AMG DYNAMIC PLUS package, available as an option, combines dynamic driving extras - including the powerful boost for RACE START and the increase in maximum speed to 250 km/h - with the emotional AMG sound experience "Performance". The latter provides a distinctive sound experience in the three selectable levels "Balanced", "Sport" and "Powerful". The intensity of the acoustic setup depends on the current driving status and the selected driving mode. Sounds composed especially for the Performance sound world - for charging or infotainment functions, for example - round off the AMG experience.

The driving dynamics keep what the sound promises: if the temperature and state of charge are suitable, the maximum power and torque for RACE START can be briefly increased. In this case the Mercedes‑AMG 53 4MATIC+ takes just 3.4 seconds to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h. Onboard bass actuators and speakers make the power of the electric motors clear even when stationary, and provide an emotionally charged sound backdrop to the high acceleration. The AMG-specific graphics in the displays also visually underscore the driving performance. The AMG sound experience can also be deactivated at any time via the settings of the multimedia system, and separately for the exterior and interior.

Further options for even more dynamism

Numerous AMG options enhance the dynamic impression if required These include design features such as the AMG Night Package Dark Chrome, red brake callipers, AMG carbon trim elements and AMG seat covers in nappa leather with specific seat graphics. The high-performance electric saloon can also be technically further refined for even more driving dynamics, for example with corresponding hardware such as the AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system. There is also a choice of aerodynamically optimised 21- and 22-inch AMG light-alloy wheels.

AMG TRACK PACE, the virtual race engineer, is also available as an option: the software is part of the MBUX infotainment system and permanently records more than 80 vehicle-specific data (e.g. speed, acceleration), for example while driving on a racetrack. On top of this, lap and sector times are displayed, as well as the respective difference from a reference time. Because specific display elements are shown in green or red, the driver is able to see at a glance without reading numbers whether they are currently faster or slower than the best time.

The data are displayed on the multimedia display, in the instrument cluster and on the optional head-up display.

Sustainable use of electrical power thanks to Mercedes me Charge

With Mercedes me Charge, customers always charge green at every public charging station throughout Europe as of 2021. High-quality guarantees of origin ensure that as much green power from renewable energies is fed into the grid as is withdrawn via Mercedes me Charge. In the first three years after the purchase of an EQS 53 4MATIC+, there is no basic charge for Mercedes me Charge and therefore "green charging" for customers. Another advantage is IONITY Unlimited: All European EQS customers can use the IONITY fast charging network free of charge for one year via Mercedes me Charge. The new plug & charge function makes charging the EQS particularly convenient.

Mercedes me Charge is currently the largest charging network worldwide: It currently has more than 500,000 AC and DC charging points in 31 countries, including over 200,000 in Europe. Also included are the 336 fast-charging stations of the IONITY quick-charging network co-founded by Mercedes-Benz. In addition, the functionality of Mercedes me Charge in MBUX has been expanded to include functions such as filtering and forecasting the availability of charging stations.

Mercedes me App: easy operation on smartphone and tablet

The Mercedes me App offers many improved and new functions since the last revision. These include a filter option that allows the charging points to be sorted according to criteria such as availability or charging capacity. The app now also shows how busy the respective charging station is likely to be during the course of the day, based on a probability calculation.

Predictive route planning and efficient driving with Electric Intelligence

As far as Navigation with Electric Intelligence is concerned, the name says it all. Because it plans the fastest and most convenient route, including charging stops, based on numerous factors and reacts dynamically to traffic jams or a change in driving style, for example. Electric Intelligence plans a fast and comfortable route in advance, including charging stops, based on numerous factors such as the calculated energy demand. The system includes all relevant data in the calculation, from topography and route to driving speed and heating and cooling requirements.

With Electric Intelligence, the EQS 53 also reacts dynamically to the traffic situation on the planned route. The vehicle records traffic tailbacks and road closures, as well as changes in energy demand. For its calculations the system uses information from the cloud, which it combines with onboard data.

The planned route can be edited individually. For example, the customer can set the additional reserve at the destination and at the charging station (SoC, State of Charge) - ten percent SoC is standard. If the "Charge at destination" function is selected, the set reserve may be undercut until the destination is reached. MBUX indicates whether the available battery capacity is sufficient to drive back to the starting point without charging.

Further options for individual route planning:

  • The route calculation prefers manually added charging stations along the route
  • The driver can exclude suggested charging stations
  • Calculation of the expected charging costs per charging stop

If there is a risk of not reaching the destination or the charging station with the chosen settings, MBUX informs the driver in good time with a note to activate the ECO driving functions, thanks to "Active range monitoring".

Comprehensive safety concept: Battery is crash-protected in the underbody

The battery sits in a crash-protected area in the underbody, embedded in the body shell structure including an extruded aluminium profile on the side. During extrusion, a heated block of metal is pushed through the dies and turns into an endless section, which is then cut to fit. This makes highly complex sections that are precisely tailored to the requirements possible.  The housing with energy absorbing structures at the front and side as well as a rigid, double-walled base plate provide additional protection for the modules.

Extensive crash and component tests have been part of the standard procedure at Mercedes-Benz for decades, and the standard is acknowledged to be high - the internal requirements are often significantly more stringent than the law requires. The company also attaches great importance to the best possible protection for the batteries. The test criteria include, among other things, the battery behaviour under shock load and in the event of foreign object penetration. Overheating and overcharging are also important parts of the tests. 

In addition, there is a separate, multi-level safety system for everyday operation. This includes, for example, temperature, voltage or insulation monitoring as a continuously monitoring safety system. If a fault occurs, the battery switches off. Crash monitoring when stationary (during DC charging) is also standard.

Sustainability in production and materials

The roof of Factory 56, the production site of the AMG EQS, is fitted with 12,000 photovoltaic modules. These have a maximum output of around 5000 kWp and can thus cover around 30 percent of the factory's energy needs on an annual average. Overall, the required energy requirement is reduced by 25 percent compared to other assembly shops. The bottom line is that Factory 56 is a zero-carbon factory - completely CO2-neutral. 40 percent of the roof area of Factory 56 has greenery, and recycled concrete was used for the first time in the main building. Production of the highly complex lithium-ion batteries at the Hedelfingen plant, part of the Stuttgart-Untertürkheim location, will be CO2-neutral from 2022. As part of strategic partnerships, Mercedes‑Benz has also agreed to purchase battery cells manufactured in a CO2-neutral manner.

The components weigh over 80 kilograms and are made of resource-saving materials (recycled and renewable raw materials). A new yarn made of regenerated nylon is sewn into the floor coverings of the all-electric AMG model. One ton of this yarn saves over 6.5 tons of CO2 compared to new material. The steel for the vehicle body consists of 80 per cent secondary steel, most of which is obtained from recycled steel scrap.

After use in the vehicle, a second lease of life is possible for batteries: For example, in an energy bank operated by Mercedes-Benz Energy GmbH. Together with its partners, the company has already brought three large-scale energy banks with a total of around 50 MWh of energy from automotive battery systems into the German electricity grid. The first 2nd-life battery storage system was connected to the grid in October 2016 in Lünen, Westphalia.

독일 튜너이자 자동차 제조사인 브라부스(Brabus)가  9월 22일, 독일 현지에서 세계에서 가장 빠른 SUV를 표방한  ‘900 로켓 에디션(900 ROCKET EDITION)’을 발표했다.

 

900 로켓 에디션은 AMG의 신형 GLE 63 S 4매틱을 베이스로 만든 스페셜 버전이다. 

 

엔진은 V8 4.0L 트윈 터보를 가져와 튜닝했다. 배기량을 4.0에서 4.5로 키우고 전용 ECU를 적용해 연료 분사와 점화 시점을 최적화했다. 또한, 터보 차저의 부스트압을 높이면서 관련 부품의 내구성을 높였다. 

 

스포츠 배기 시스템은 배압을 낮춰 출력을 높이는 데 도움을 줬고 가변 배기 플랩으로 커밍 홈 모드와 레이스 모드를 지원한다. 후자를 선택하면 레이스카 못지않은 강렬한 사운드를 즐길 수 있다. 테일 파이프는 카본이다.

 

이를 통해 최고출력 900마력의 몬스터 유닛을 완성했다. GLE 63 S보다 288마력이나 훌쩍 뛴 수치다. 최대토크도 40.8kgm나 솟아 127.5kgm에 달한다. 강력한 토크에 맞춰 9단 변속기의 토크 대응력도 높였다.

 

강력한 파워트레인 덕분에 움직임은 한결 빨라졌다. 0-100km/h 가속 시간이 3.8초에서 3.2초로 0.6초 줄었고, 최고속도는 330km/h로 50km/h 상승했다.

 

강렬한 외모

 

튼실한 심장에 맞춰 외모도 스포티하게 가꿨다. 앞뒤 펜더에 카본 익스텐더를 붙였고 프런트 스포일러를 더해 고속에서 차체가 뜨는 걸 방지했다. 앞 범퍼 측면에 공기 흡입구를 추가했으며, 브라부스 엠블럼과 레드 스트라이프로 그릴을 장식했다. 

 

차고를 25mm 내릴 수 있는 에어서스펜션은 트랙과 일반도로 주행에 맞춰 최적화했다. 휠은 23인치 모노블록 Y가 기본이고, 24인치 모노 블록 ‘Platinum Edition’ 단조 휠과 고성능 타이어를 옵션으로 제공한다.

 

실내는 여느 브라부스와 비슷한 흐름이다. 다만 레드 포인트를 주어 강렬하다. 최고급 가죽과 카본으로 도배한 느낌이다. 브레이크와 가속 페달도 알루미늄으로 만들고 붉게 물들였다.

 

이렇듯 GLE 이상의 새로운 모습으로 태어난 브라부스 900 로켓 에디션은 25대 한정으로 생산될 예정이며, 꽤 많은 예비 고객을 확보한 것으로 알려졌다.

메르세데스-AMG의 첫번째 플러그인 하이브리드 모델이 등장했습니다. 어제 월드 프리미어된 주인공으로 4.0L V8 트윈 터보 가솔린 엔진에 6.1kWh 배터리 팩과 리어액슬에 하나의 전기 모터를 장착하여 최고출력 843마력과 최대토크 143kg.m을 발휘합니다.

 

AMG 페트로나스 F1 팀과 협업해 개발한 배터리팩은 무게가 89kg 수준으로 비교적 가볍습니다. 하지만, 차가 워낙 무거운지라 동급에 비해서 전체 무게가 결코 가볍다고 할 수는 없지요. 이런 약점을 지울정도로 강력한 파워트레인을 품었다는게 반전이긴합니다.

 

오피셜 정보에 따르면 제로백은 2.9초로 AMG GT 블랙 시리즈보다 0.2초 빠른 수준이며, 최고 속도는 315km/h 입니다.

Affalterbach.  The first performance hybrid from Mercedes-AMG is entering series production and draws on technologies from Formula 1. The concept includes a distinctive drive layout with electric motor and battery on the rear axle as well as a high-performance battery developed in-house. The Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E PERFORMANCE (weighted, combined fuel consumption: 8.6 l/100 km; weighted, combined CO2 emissions: 196 g/km; weighted power consumption: 10.3 kWh/100 km)[1] combines superior performance and impressive driving dynamics with maximum efficiency thanks to its special powertrain. The E PERFORMANCE model thus transfers the DNA of AMG Driving Performance into the electrified future. The combination of 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine and electric motor generates a system output of 620 kW (843 hp) and a maximum system torque of more than 1,400 Nm. The electric drive's immediate response at the rear axle, rapid torque build-up and improved weight distribution make for a new, highly dynamic driving experience. As in Formula 1, the battery is specifically designed for fast power delivery and draw. The electric range of 12 kilometres allows a practical operating radius, for example in the city or in residential areas. Mercedes-AMG is breaking new ground in communication on electrification together with brand ambassador will.i.am: The world-famous musician and multiple Grammy Award winner is the protagonist of the marketing campaign "Everything but quiet". He not only contributed to the concept, but also wrote an exclusive song for the release video.

The layout with the combustion engine at the front and Electric Drive Unit on the rear axle offers numerous advantages. The optimised weight distribution, best possible utilisation of torque and the very fast power delivery promise driving dynamics at the highest level. Added to this is the high-performance battery developed in-house, which has twice the power density of conventional drive batteries and, like many other components, is inspired by technology from Formula 1", says Jochen Hermann, Technical General Manager of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

Expressive design with striking front apron

The expressive design with a low front section, muscular body, squat greenhouse and dynamic fastback highlights the sporty genes of the four-door coupé. Another striking feature is the characteristic front apron, which is based on the design of the two-door AMG GT. It appears to be cast from a single mould, and blends homogeneously into the dynamic design of the overall vehicle. The outer air intakes are wider and more pointed towards the centre of the car. The airflow is channelled to the wheel arch coolers by three vertical fins.

Exclusive identification features at the rear are the rear apron with integrated plug-in charging flap and the model designation highlighted in red. With the hybrid, AMG is also introducing externally fluted trapezoidal twin exhaust tailpipes. The "E PERFORMANCE" badge on the wings indicates the hybrid drive. As in the entire model series, numerous paint finishes and equipment features are available for the hybrid version. For example, there are four matt paint finishes, five metallic finishes and two non-metallic finishes to choose from. In addition, there are seven new paint finishes from the extended customisation range. The exterior design can be further accentuated with the new AMG Night Package II or a combination of the Night Package and Carbon Package, for example. In addition, there are new 20 and 21-inch light-alloy wheels, each in two colour variants. The exclusive Edition is also available for the performance hybrid.

As the new flagship of the model series, the AMG GT 63 S E PERFORMANCE is particularly extensively equipped. It has received all the upgrades of the latest model facelift, such as the AMG RIDE CONTROL+ suspension with new damping system. Also on board as standard are the adapted AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system and the MBUX multimedia system with special hybrid displays.

MBUX multimedia system with hybrid-specific displays

The standard Widescreen Cockpit features the MBUX multimedia system with AMG hybrid-specific displays and functions. In the instrument cluster, the driver can read the electric range, the power consumption, the output and torque of the electric motor and the temperatures of the battery and electric motor. High-quality graphics on the multimedia display visualise the power flow of the entire drive system, rpm, output, torque and temperature of the electric motor, as well as the temperature of the battery. The rear-seat passengers receive information on the energy flow as well as the power and torque of the electric motor on their optional multimedia display.

AMG Performance steering wheel in a twin-spoke design

The standard AMG Performance steering wheel with its distinctive twin-spoke design and seamlessly integrated control buttons also offers tangible and visible added value. The three rounded twin spokes combine strength with lightness. The round AMG steering wheel buttons impress with brilliant displays and their perfect turn-and-press operating logic. This allows important driving functions and all driving modes to be controlled without having to take one's hands off the steering wheel. As a new feature, it is possible to select the regeneration levels of the hybrid drive via the steering wheel buttons.

Many individual choices are available in the interior. Exclusive colours emphasise either the sporty or luxurious side of the new flagship model - for example the combination of Exclusive nappa leather in titanium grey pearl/black with contrasting topstitching in yellow or fine Exclusive nappa leather in truffle brown/black in the STYLE trim (diamond stitching). In addition there is a choice of five further colours in Exclusive nappa STYLE leather: sienna brown, classic red, yacht blue, deep white and neva grey. The seats in the front and rear are completely single-tone in the chosen interior colour, as are the armrests in the doors, the leather edging of the floor mats and the steering wheel rim. 

The details of the AMG-specific Performance hybrid drive: combustion engine in the front, electric motor in the rear

In the AMG GT 63 S E PERFORMANCE, the 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine is combined with a permanently excited synchronous electric motor, a high-performance battery developed in Affalterbach and the fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive system. The combination of the 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine and electric motor generates a system output of 620 kW (843 hp) and a maximum system torque of more than 1,400 Nm. The driving performance of the most powerful series-production vehicle from Affalterbach to date is correspondingly impressive: acceleration from a standstill to 100 km/h takes just 2.9 seconds, and 200 km/h is reached in less than ten seconds. Acceleration only ends at 316 km/h.

The 150 kW (204 hp) electric motor is positioned at the rear axle, where it is integrated with an electrically shifted two-speed gearbox and the electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential in a compact electric drive unit (EDU). Experts refer to this layout as a P3 hybrid. The lightweight high-performance battery is also located in the rear above the rear axle. This compact design has numerous advantages:

  • The electric motor acts directly on the rear axle and can therefore convert its power more directly into propulsion - for that extra boost when moving off, accelerating or overtaking.
  • The power of the electric motor can inherently be applied at full torque, therefore particularly agile starting is possible.
  • In addition, the driver immediately experiences a noticeable performance increase thanks to the integrated, electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential: The hybrid model is even more agile when accelerating out of bends, and provides more traction and therefore more driving safety.
  • As slip at the rear axle increases, the drive power of the electric motor is also transferred to the front wheels as required for more traction. The mechanical connection of the fully variable all-wheel drive makes this possible by means of a propshaft and the drive shafts of the front wheels.
  • The positioning on the rear axle improves the weight as well as the axle load distribution in the vehicle and thus forms the basis for the convincing handling.
  • The AMG concept offers very high regeneration efficiency, as the system allows only minimal mechanical and hydraulic losses from the engine and transmission.
  • The automated two-speed transmission at the rear axle with its specially calibrated gear ratio ensures the spread from high wheel torque for agile starting to safe continuous output at higher speeds. An electric actuator engages second gear at around 140 km/h at the latest, which corresponds to the electric motor's maximum speed of around 13,500 rpm.
  • With the increase in performance due to the additional electric motor, the development team was also able to improve the efficiency of the entire vehicle in parallel - and achieve lower emissions as well as lower consumption.

Inspired by Formula 1, developed in Affalterbach: the AMG high-performance battery

When defining the electrification strategy, it was clear from the outset that all essential components would be developed in Affalterbach. At the heart of this is the AMG high-performance battery (HPB). Development of this lithium-ion battery was inspired by technologies that have already proven themselves under the toughest conditions in the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team's Formula 1 hybrid racing cars. In the course of development, there was a lively exchange of expert knowledge between the High Performance Powertrains (HPP) Formula 1 engine shop in Brixworth and Mercedes-AMG in Affalterbach. The AMG high-performance battery combines high power that can be called up frequently in succession with low weight to increase the overall performance of the vehicle. Added to this are the fast energy draw and the high power density. This means that during a brisk drive in hilly terrain, for example, drivers can immediately call on the full power potential on uphill stretches, while regeneration is strong when driving downhill.

70 kW continuous output and 150 kW peak output

The high-performance battery of the AMG GT 63 S E PERFORMANCE has a capacity of 6.1 kWh, 70 kW of continuous output and 150 kW of peak output for ten seconds. The low weight of only 89 kilograms allows the very high power density of 1.7 kW/kg. For comparison: conventional batteries without direct cooling of the cells achieve about half of this figure. Charging is via the 3.7 kW on-board AC charger, at a charging station, wallbox or household socket. The battery is designed for fast power delivery and draw, not for the longest possible range. Nevertheless, the electric range of 12 kilometres allows a practical operating radius, for example for quiet and emission-free driving from a residential area to the outskirts of the city or to the motorway.

The innovation push: the direct cooling of the battery cells

The basis for the high performance of the AMG 400 volt battery is the innovative direct cooling: for the first time, a high-tech coolant based on an electrically non-conductive liquid flows around all 560 cells and cools them individually. Every battery needs a defined temperature for optimum power delivery. If the battery becomes too cold or too hot, it noticeably loses power at times, or has to be regulated to avoid damage if the heat becomes excessive. The even temperature of the battery therefore has a decisive influence on its performance, service life and safety. Conventional cooling systems, which only cool with air or the entire battery pack indirectly with water, quickly reach their limits - especially as the requirements continue to increase due to cells with ever increasing energy density. If the thermal management does not fulfil its function optimally, the battery is at risk of ageing prematurely.

For the direct cooling, the AMG specialists had to develop new cooling modules that are only millimetres thin. Around 14 litres of coolant circulate from top to bottom through the entire battery past each cell with the help of a specially developed high-performance electric pump, also flowing through an oil/water heat exchanger attached directly to the battery. This conducts the heat into one of the vehicle's two low-temperature (LT) circuits, and from there to the LT radiator at the front of the car where it is released into the outside air. The system is designed to ensure even heat distribution in the battery.

The result is that the battery is always within a consistent, optimum operating temperature window averaging 45 degrees Celsius, no matter how often it is charged or discharged. It may well be that the average temperature is exceeded when driving at high speeds. The protection mechanisms are therefore configured so that the maximum performance can be obtained from the battery, with the temperature level subsequently lowered by direct cooling. Conventional cooling systems cannot cope with this, and the battery can no longer fully utilise its potential. That is not the case with the AMG high-performance battery: even during fast laps in hybrid mode on the race track, where acceleration (battery is discharged) and deceleration (battery is charged) are frequent, the energy storage system retains its high performance capacity.

Only effective direct cooling makes it possible to use cells with a very high power density. Thanks to this individual solution, the battery system is particularly light and compact. The low weight is also due to the material-saving busbar concept, and the lightweight yet strong crash structure of the aluminium housing. It ensures the highest level of safety.

Operating strategy: electrical power always available

The basic operating strategy is derived from the hybrid powerpack of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1 racing car. As in the top class of motorsport, maximum propulsion is always available when the driver needs it - for example, to accelerate powerfully out of corners or when overtaking. the electric power can always be called up and frequently reproduced via high regeneration performance and on-demand recharging. The independent battery concept enables the optimal compromise between maximum driving dynamics and contemporary efficiency. All components are perfectly coordinated: The performance gain can be experienced directly.

The seven AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving modes "Electric", "Comfort", "Sport", "Sport+", "RACE", "Slippery" and "Individual" are precisely configured for the new drive technology and thus provide a wide-ranging driving experience - from highly efficient to highly dynamic. The driving modes adjust important parameters such as the response of the drive system and transmission, the steering characteristic, the suspension damping or the sound. The modes can be selected using the rocker switch in the centre console or the AMG steering wheel buttons.

Usually, the Performance hybrid starts silently ("Silent Mode") in the "Comfort" driving mode when the electric motor is switched on. In the instrument cluster, the "Ready" icon signals that the vehicle is ready to drive. In addition, a powerful, sonorous start-up sound typical of AMG is emitted in the interior via the vehicle's loudspeakers as acoustic feedback showing readiness to get going. Slight pressure on the accelerator pedal is all it takes to set the AMG Performance hybrid in motion.

When driving on all-electric power, the legally required Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System warns the surroundings that the Performance hybrid is approaching. A specially composed low-frequency, speed-dependent AMG sound is emitted to the outside via single loudspeakers at the front and rear. The sound can also be heard at a subdued level in the interior, as acoustic feedback for the passengers. In the European Union the system is active up to 20 km/h, in the USA up to the equivalent of approx. 30 km/h. After that, the driving signal fades out harmoniously up to approx. 50 km/h.

At higher speeds, the customer can select the sound experience between "balanced" and "powerful" using the sound buttons in the centre console or on the steering wheel (recognisable by a frequency wave symbol): When driving on all-electric power, either a discreet or a powerful sound experience is generated. When the combustion engine starts, the selected setting influences the sound of the exhaust system. In every situation, one thing remains the same: under all conditions, the Performance hybrid is immediately recognisable as an AMG by its sound.

  • "Electric" driving mode: The focus is on the electric driving experience. All-electric driving is possible from standstill up to 130 km/h, with the combustion engine always switched off. The mechanical connection to the AMG Performance 4MATIC+ components means that all-wheel drive is always available: If the rear wheels suddenly have too much slip, the power of the electric motor is also transmitted to the front wheels via the propshaft and drive shafts. When the battery has run down or the driver requests more power, the intelligent operating control automatically switches to the "Comfort" driving mode and the combustion engine starts up to provide propulsion.
  • "Comfort" driving mode: the start-up is mostly electric. Combustion engine and electric motor run as demanded by the situation - with electric drive at low speeds, for example in residential areas or in the city centre, hybrid driving with combustion engine and electric motor in the countryside and on the motorway. Overall, the result is a harmonious and consumption-optimised driving impression, thanks in part to the early upshifts of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT-9G transmission. Suspension and steering are set up for an emphasis on comfort. The steering focus is on energy efficiency, so that fuel consumption and emissions can be reduced. The hallmark AMG sportiness and agility are retained.
  • "Sport" driving mode: starting with combustion engine and electric motor and situational interaction of the two drives. More boost from the electric motor is released. Sporty driving impression owing to more agile accelerator response, shorter shift times and earlier downshifts. A more dynamic suspension and steering setup.
  • "Sport+" driving mode: starting with combustion engine and electric motor and situational interaction of the two drives. Even higher boost performance. Extremely sporty character thanks to even more agile throttle response and targeted torque intervention during upshifts with cylinder deactivation for optimum shift times. Increased idle speed for faster starting. An even more dynamic set-up for suspension, steering and powertrain.
  • "RACE" driving mode: for highly dynamic driving on closed race tracks. In this mode, all the parameters are configured for maximum performance. starting with combustion engine and electric motor and situational interaction of the two drives. Full electric boost power from the electric motor to support the combustion engine during hard acceleration. Strong battery recharging at low power demand for maximum electrical availability.
  • "Slippery" driving mode: optimised for slippery road conditions, with reduced power and a flat torque curve. All-electric driving and regeneration adjustment are deactivated.
  • "Individual" driving mode: individual customisation of the drive, transmission, AMG DYNAMICS, chassis, steering and exhaust system.

The control of vehicle dynamics also benefits from the hybrid drive. Instead of braking intervention by ESP®, the electric motor can also control traction as soon as a wheel signals too much slip. To do this, the intelligent control system reduces the drive torque of the electric motor that is transferred to the wheel via the limited-slip rear differential. The result is that ESP® does not have to intervene at all, or only later. Advantage: the combustion engine can thus be operated with higher torque, which both improves agility afterwards and increases efficiency. In addition, the power otherwise "destroyed" during braking can be used to charge the battery.

Regeneration selectable in four stages

Because the high-performance battery is always in the optimum temperature window of around 45 degrees thanks to direct cooling, regeneration can also be optimised - normally a battery heats up strongly at high regeneration power, so that energy recovery needs to be limited.

Regeneration starts when drivers takes their foot off the accelerator pedal, i.e. in overrun mode without touching the brake pedal. This charges the battery and creates a strong braking torque - the wheel brakes are subjected to less wear or, depending on the regeneration level and traffic situation, do not have to be applied at all. The driver can select four different regeneration levels using the right-hand AMG steering wheel button. This applies in all driving modes with the exception of "Slippery", and the energy recovery is configured differently depending on the driving mode.

  • Level 0: The vehicle behaves similarly to a conventional combustion engine with manual transmission, where the clutch is disengaged, and rolls on with the least resistance when the accelerator is released. The regeneration level is very low, and only serves to maintain the vehicle's power supply. With the combustion engine switched off, friction losses in the drive train are reduced to a minimum.
  • Level 1: This is the standard setting at which regeneration is already noticeable to the driver, and corresponds approximately to the deceleration of a conventional combustion engine whose clutch is engaged.
  • Level 2: Stronger regeneration, the brake pedal hardly needs to be pushed when moving in traffic.
  • Level 3: Maximum energy recovery, making so-called "one-pedal" driving possible as in an all-electric car. Depending on the driving status, more than 100 kW of power can be fed back into the battery.
  • Special feature of the RACE driving mode: On the racetrack, the driver wants to squeeze the maximum time possible out of any braking action. In "RACE" driving mode, regeneration is automatically set at level 1 to allow the most reproducible vehicle behaviour possible at the limits.

Another advantage of regeneration is that the vehicle does not speed up when driving down steep hills. So the system works like an engine brake, but also feeds energy into the battery.

AMG 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine with twin-scroll turbochargers

As the new top model in the range, the AMG GT 63 S E PERFORMANCE benefits from the performance of the AMG 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine with 470 kW (639 hp) and a maximum torque of 900 Nm, which is available over a wide rpm band from 2500 to 4500 rpm. This harmonises perfectly with the electric motor, which delivers its maximum of 320 Nm right from the start.

Two twin-scroll turbochargers are partly responsible for the high power output, combining optimum response at low engine speeds with a high increase in power at higher engine speeds. In addition to this, the turbine housing is divided into two flow passages which run parallel to one another. Combined with two separate ducts in the exhaust manifold, this makes it possible to individually control the momentum of the exhaust gases acting on the turbine wheel. One duct is fed by the exhaust gases of the first and second cylinders of a cylinder bank, the other by the exhaust gases of the third and fourth cylinders. The aim is to prevent the individual cylinders from having mutually adverse effects on the gas cycle. This reduces the exhaust gas back-pressure and improves the gas exchange.

Belt-driven starter-generator supplies the ancillary units

The belt-driven starter-generator (RSG) combines the alternator and starter in one component, and has an output of 10 kW (14 hp). It starts the combustion engine and ensures the basic supply of the ancillary units such as air conditioning or driving lights, for example, when the vehicle is at a traffic light and the charge level of the high-voltage battery is no longer sufficient to support the low-voltage on-board electrical system. The RSG is particularly responsive because it is integrated into the 400-volt high-voltage electrical system.

AMG RIDE CONTROL+ suspension as standard, with wide spread between dynamism and comfort

The AMG RIDE CONTROL+ suspension is based on multi-chamber air suspension with automatic level control, combined with adaptive, electronically controlled adjustable damping. This damping system is completely new in the AMG GT 4-door Coupé models: for the first time, two so-called pressure relief valves are used. These continuously variable control valves, located outside the damper, allow the damping force to be adjusted even more precisely to different driving conditions and driving modes: one valve controls the rebound damping, i.e. the force that occurs when the wheel rebounds, and the other controls the compression damping when the wheel compresses. The rebound and compression stages are controlled independently of each other.

The AMG development engineers were able to significantly increase the spread between sportiness and comfort, among other things by widening the gap between the minimum and maximum damping force characteristics and by providing even greater flexibility in map design. Due to the special design of the valves, the damper reacts quickly and sensitively to changing road surfaces and driving conditions.

The driver can preselect the basic set-up via the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving modes: at the touch of a button, the handling characteristics change, for example, from full dynamics in "Sport+" mode to smooth cruising in the "Comfort" setting. In addition, the tuning can be adjusted in three stages independently of the driving modes via a dedicated button.

The AMG Performance hybrids also have the integrated AMG DYNAMICS vehicle dynamics control system. It influences the control strategies of ESP® (Electronic Stability Program), the all-wheel drive, and the electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential. This increases agility without negatively affecting the vehicle's stability.

Particularly noteworthy: AMG DYNAMICS determines how the vehicle should react. The system uses the available sensors, among other things, to ascertain the speed, lateral acceleration, steering angle and yaw rate. Thanks to an intelligent pilot-control principle, it is possible to anticipate how the driver wants the vehicle to behave, based on the driver's actions and on data from the sensors. Regulation is tailored to the dynamic driving competence of the driver – without any noticeable or disruptive interventions by the system. The driver gets a very authentic driving feel with high cornering dynamics and optimum traction, as well as high stability and predictable handling. Even experienced drivers receive optimum assistance without feeling patronised by the system.

  • AMG DYNAMICS "Basic" is assigned to the "Comfort" and "Electric" driving mode. The design results in a very stable ride with high yaw damping.
  • "Advanced" is activated in the "Sport" mode. The vehicle remains neutrally balanced. The reduced yaw damping and increased agility support dynamic manoeuvres such as driving on winding country roads.
  • "Pro" (abbreviation for "Professional") is part of the "Sport+" mode. In "Pro" the driver receives even more assistance for dynamic driving manoeuvres while agility and feedback from the road when cornering are further enhanced.
  • "Master" is coupled with the driving mode "RACE". "Master" mode is aimed at drivers who want to experience dynamism and the driving enjoyment on closed circuits. "Master" offers a slightly oversteering vehicle balance, more direct steering and more agile turn-in behaviour. In this way, "Master" ensures maximum agility and optimally exploits the dynamic potential of the "S" version. To activate "Master" mode, the driver must use the separate button in the centre console to switch ESP® to ESP® SPORT handling mode or ESP® OFF.

In the "Individual" driving mode, drivers can set the AMG DYNAMICS levels "Basic", "Advanced", "Pro" and "Master" themselves.

Good control and fade-resistant: the AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system

Neither are there any compromises when it comes to the brakes: In keeping with the extreme power values and the associated performance, the AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system with bronze-coloured 6-piston fixed callipers at the front and 1-piston floating callipers at the rear is fitted as standard. It is adapted to the high driving dynamics, and larger than in the models with only a combustion engine: the carbon-ceramic brake discs measure 420 x 40 millimetres at the front axle and 380 x 32 millimetres at the rear axle. The brake system impresses with very short braking distances as well as maximum stability and fade-resistance under heavy use. In addition, it scores with a long service life and a particularly fast response. Furthermore, the lightweight material saves additional weight and reduces the unsprung masses. Comfort features include hill starting assistance and priming/dry braking in wet conditions. With the ignition switched off and the vehicle at a standstill, the transmission automatically selects the parking position "P". Meanwhile, the electric parking brake releases automatically when pulling away.

New brand ambassador will.i.am and marketing campaign: "Everything but quiet"

Mercedes-AMG is also breaking new ground in communicating the new hybrid model. The US-American global star and entrepreneur will.i.am will act as a long-term partner and brand ambassador for the "Future of Driving Performance" vehicles with an electrified powertrain.  The Black Eyed Peas co-founder and frontman, musician, producer and tech entrepreneur is the recipient of seven Grammy Awards, an Emmy Award, a CLIO Award and an Honorary Fellowship from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).

But that's not all: will.i.am is a true car enthusiast who extensively modifies his private vehicles with a high level of technical and aesthetic understanding. He has a keen eye for innovations that bridge the gap between culture and technology. He strives to improve things down to the last detail, extend boundaries and question the accepted until the optimum solution is found - just like the Mercedes-AMG team when developing the performance and sports car models. Performance Luxury featuring 2+2 seats and "hyperanalog" cockpit

The interior design of the upcoming all-new SL transforms iconic elements from the first 300 SL Roadster into the modern era. Thanks to its Mercedes-AMG performance genes, the new generation appeals to a sporty target group as well as customers looking for maximum comfort. Fine materials, meticulous workmanship and attention to detail further underscore the high luxury standards in the interior. The cockpit design focuses on the driver and impresses with a harmonious overall impression, right down to the adjustable central display in the center console. The completely redesigned space concept features a 2+2 seating configuration while offering more functionality and more space. The innovative MBUX infotainment system also offers a choice of several unique display styles and modes.

The original 300 SL Roadster is certainly one of the most famous automotive design icons. Its minimalist and high-quality interior inspired our designers to create the interior for the new Mercedes-AMG SL. For the new- generation of the iconic SL, the designers created a mix of analog geometry and a digital world - called "hyperanalog". A good example of this is the fully digital instrument cluster, which is integrated into a three- dimensional visor.

The high-quality combination of the analog world and state-of-the-art digital equipment makes one thing clear: the new SL is the rebirth of an icon for the modern era," says Philipp Schiemer, Chairman of the Board of Management at Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

"The result is a revolutionary interior experience caught between digital and analog luxury. We created the most iconic SL ever since--the luxury icon of the 2020s."

The new, highly sophisticated dimensional concept once again allows a 2+2 seating configuration for the first time since 1989 (Mercedes SL model series R 129). This makes the new SL even more versatile. The rear seats increase everyday usability by offering additional space and flexibility. If the extra seating is not needed, a wind deflector can protect front seat passengers from wind at the back of the neck. Alternatively, the second row of seats can be used as additional storage space, to accommodate a golf bag, for example.

The wide choice of different upholsteries available for the sport or AMG Performance Seats also reflects the range from comfort to performance-oriented equipment. Customers can choose from single or two-tone Nappa Leather, elegant Nappa STYLE Leather with diamond stitching, or the sporty combination of Nappa Leather with DINAMICA RACE microfiber and contrasting topstitching in yellow or red.

Aviation-inspired instrument panel

The symmetrical instrument panel is designed as a sculptural, powerful wing and structured into an upper and lower section. The four newly developed, galvanized turbine nozzles are a particularly noteworthy design highlight. Their surfaces merge into the instrument panel in the form of distinctive power domes. The lower section of the instrument panel evolves fluidly from the center console, seamlessly connecting the two elements.

The new cockpit design also creates a clear focus on the driver. For example, the instrument cluster's high- resolution 12.3-inch LCD screen was not designed to be free-standing, but instead is integrated into a high- tech visor directly placed in front of the driver. This design also prevents reflections caused by sunlight.

Center console with adjustable touchscreen

The center console provides visual interest in the space between the driver and front passenger. Of maximum width and rising sharply towards the front, it flows into the lower section of the instrument panel. The functional and visual center of the center console is the metallic panel that breaks through the leather surfaces at the front and rear. Featuring the air intake signature design element, it carries on the genes of the AMG GT and GT 4-Door Coupe. This design element thus becomes a hallmark AMG stylistic element in the interior. The air intake transitions almost seamlessly into the 11.9-inch multimedia touchscreen in portrait format. To avoid reflections caused by sunlight when driving with the top down, this screen can be adjusted electrically into a more vertical position. Its portrait format offers clear advantages, especially for navigation, as well as more space ergonomically. The touchscreen floats between the two central turbine nozzles as a digital contrast to more analog design elements.

The door panels are fluidly integrated with the interior

Similar to the center console, the surfaces in the doors also flow fluidly from the instrument panel. The result is a gradient accentuated with decorative topstitching, framing the entire interior and running past the turbine nozzles at the sides. The center of the door is designed as a sensual layered topography. The pull handle is also designed in the same way as the center console and is another eye-catching feature. The materials and modelling of the surfaces are repeated in the doors, creating balance in the interior. High-quality Burmester speakers in real metal, whose perforation pattern also stand out visually, are integrated into the doors.

Sculptural seat design with integrated headrests

The avant-garde seat design of the new Mercedes-AMG SL further develops the Mercedes sculptural seat design in a sporty way. It plays skilfully with layers and enveloping surfaces. This makes the seats appear lighter and less voluminous. The headrests are visually integrated into the backrest and thus contribute to the sporty proportions of the seat. Ideal ergonomics and various progressive seam and attachment patterns complete the symbiosis of high-tech, performance and luxury.

Intuitively operated and capable of learning: the latest-generation MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience)

The operating structure and some key functions of this second-generation MBUX system correspond to those found in the latest S-Class. They have been extensively supplemented or replaced in some instances by AMG- specific content and views. This makes the new SL highly independent in terms of communication and information. Menu items such as "Performance" or "Track Pace" emphasize the sporty character. The interior has become even more digital and intelligent, as hardware and software have been extensively enhanced. Brilliant images on the LCD screens make it easy to control vehicle and comfort functions.

The driver display and central display both offer an aesthetically pleasing and holistically coordinated experience. The appearance of the instrument cluster can be personalized with different display styles and individually selectable main views.

The available head-up display contributes to a focused driving experience, as the driver does not need to take their eyes off the road. It displays relevant cues and actions three-dimensionally in the real driving situation and surroundings. Here you can also choose between several style variants - each matching the display in the instrument cluster. Depending on the equipment or personal taste, the Ambient Light frames the exclusive interior in 64 different colors.

When the all-new 2022 Mercedes-AMG SL roadster takes the stage later this year, it will advance the iconic series with high comfort, remarkable design, precise driving dynamics and optimal packaging.
