55 years of the Mercedes-AMG success story
Founded in 1967 by engineers Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher, the company has continued to build on its position as a highly successful performance and sports car brand through numerous successes in motorsport and the development of unique road cars. Today the Affalterbach-based company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Mercedes‑Benz Group AG and is the Group's sporting spearhead. For each of the now more than 2000 employees the focus is on the brand promise "Driving Performance", which unites the core strengths of AMG: cutting-edge technology and a passion for dynamic, emotively appealing products.
The current Mercedes‑AMG portfolio comprises more than 50 vehicles with a power range from 225 kW (306 hp) to 620 kW (843 hp) of system power in the first performance hybrid from Affalterbach, the Mercedes‑AMG GT 63 S E PERFORMANCE (WLTP: Fuel consumption weighted, combined 7.9 l/100 km; CO2 emissions weighted, combined 180 g/km; Power consumption weighted, combined 12.0 kWh/100 km)[3]. The selection ranges from performance vehicles in various body styles to completely independently developed sports cars such as the Mercedes‑AMG GT 4‑Door model and the new Mercedes‑AMG SL. The range of powertrains has also been continuously developed in line with market requirements and customer wishes and currently offers efficiency-optimised combustion engines with four, six or eight cylinders. In addition, Mercerdes‑AMG is consistently pursuing the path of the Future of Driving Performance: under the label E PERFORMANCE, performance hybrids are offered with an independent drive layout and technology from Formula 1. The portfolio also includes all-electric AMG derivatives based on the Group's own EVA2 platform. In the near future, completely independent battery-electric AMG models will also follow, which will be based on the new electrical architecture (AMG.EA) which has been developed completely in-house.
With 145,979 vehicles delivered in 2021 and growth of 16.7 percent, Mercedes‑AMG has started the anniversary year with a record figure.
Over two decades of the high-performance G‑Class
The first production model of an AMG variant of the G‑Class was launched in 1999 to mark the 20th anniversary of the off-road legend. The G 55 AMG marked the beginning of a new, highly successful chapter in G‑Class history. The 5.5‑litre naturally aspirated eight‑cylinder engine with three‑valve technology and dual ignition produced 260 kW (354 hp) and had a maximum torque of 525 Nm at 3000 rpm. In 2002, the G 63 AMG set new standards. It was the first time a twelve-cylinder engine had been used in the G‑Class. The 6.3‑litre naturally aspirated V12 engine produced 326 kW (444 hp) of power and a sumptuous 620 Nm of maximum torque. The most powerful G‑Class at the time was custom-built at the AMG Manufaktur in Affalterbach at the exclusive request of the customer. This was followed in 2004 by the G 55 AMG with a V8 supercharged engine, an even more powerful high-performance model with 350 kW (476 hp). Another highlight in 2012 was the premiere of the G 65 AMG. Its 450 kW (612 hp) V12 engine achieved 1000 Nm of torque.
The current Mercedes‑AMG G 63 consistently continues the success story. Its unique position among performance SUVs is underpinned by the powerful drive, the AMG RIDE CONTROL suspension, the AMG-specific driving programs and the luxurious interior. The AMG 4.0‑litre V8 biturbo engine with 430 kW (585 hp) and 850 Nm maximum torque, a 40:60 ratio all-wheel drive with three differential locks, the extremely fast-shifting nine-speed automatic transmission, the double-wishbone independent front suspension and the adaptive adjustable damping form the basis for the driving performance characteristic of AMG on and off surfaced roads.

Affalterbach. The first performance hybrid from Mercedes-AMG is entering series production and draws on technologies from Formula 1. The concept includes a distinctive drive layout with electric motor and battery on the rear axle as well as a high-performance battery developed in-house. The Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E PERFORMANCE (weighted, combined fuel consumption: 8.6 l/100 km; weighted, combined CO2 emissions: 196 g/km; weighted power consumption: 10.3 kWh/100 km)[1]combines superior performance and impressive driving dynamics with maximum efficiency thanks to its special powertrain. The E PERFORMANCE model thus transfers the DNA of AMG Driving Performance into the electrified future. The combination of 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine and electric motor generates a system output of 620 kW (843 hp) and a maximum system torque of more than 1,400 Nm. The electric drive's immediate response at the rear axle, rapid torque build-up and improved weight distribution make for a new, highly dynamic driving experience. As in Formula 1, the battery is specifically designed for fast power delivery and draw. The electric range of 12 kilometres allows a practical operating radius, for example in the city or in residential areas. Mercedes-AMG is breaking new ground in communication on electrification together with brand ambassador will.i.am: The world-famous musician and multiple Grammy Award winner is the protagonist of the marketing campaign "Everything but quiet". He not only contributed to the concept, but also wrote an exclusive song for the release video.
"With the new Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E PERFORMANCE we are transporting our brand DNA into an electrified future. In doing so, we are following our own technical path, which is what has always made AMG so special and desirable. Developed entirely in Affalterbach, the performance hybrid offers a fascinating level of driving dynamics and rightly bears our new technology label E PERFORMANCE. With this new concept, we are also opening up to new target groups who will experience Mercedes-AMG as the performance luxury brand of the 21st century. Our departure into AMG-typical electrification is flanked by a large-scale campaign. And I am delighted that we have also been able to win over a special partner for this in the form of superstar will.i.am, who we have been able to inspire with our technology", says Philipp Schiemer, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.
"Mercedes-AMG has always stood for top performance and maximum driving dynamics. In developing our E PERFORMANCE hybrid strategy, it was therefore clear from the outset that we would pursue a stand-alone concept for AMG that combines our core brand values with high efficiency. It is now entering series production with the new Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E PERFORMANCE. The layout with the combustion engine at the front and Electric Drive Unit on the rear axle offers numerous advantages. The optimised weight distribution, best possible utilisation of torque and the very fast power delivery promise driving dynamics at the highest level. Added to this is the high-performance battery developed in-house, which has twice the power density of conventional drive batteries and, like many other components, is inspired by technology from Formula 1", says Jochen Hermann, Technical General Manager of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.
Expressive design with striking front apron
The expressive design with a low front section, muscular body, squat greenhouse and dynamic fastback highlights the sporty genes of the four-door coupé. Another striking feature is the characteristic front apron, which is based on the design of the two-door AMG GT. It appears to be cast from a single mould, and blends homogeneously into the dynamic design of the overall vehicle. The outer air intakes are wider and more pointed towards the centre of the car. The airflow is channelled to the wheel arch coolers by three vertical fins.
Exclusive identification features at the rear are the rear apron with integrated plug-in charging flap and the model designation highlighted in red. With the hybrid, AMG is also introducing externally fluted trapezoidal twin exhaust tailpipes. The "E PERFORMANCE" badge on the wings indicates the hybrid drive. As in the entire model series, numerous paint finishes and equipment features are available for the hybrid version. For example, there are four matt paint finishes, five metallic finishes and two non-metallic finishes to choose from. In addition, there are seven new paint finishes from the extended customisation range. The exterior design can be further accentuated with the new AMG Night Package II or a combination of the Night Package and Carbon Package, for example. In addition, there are new 20 and 21-inch light-alloy wheels, each in two colour variants. The exclusive Edition is also available for the performance hybrid.
As the new flagship of the model series, the AMG GT 63 S E PERFORMANCE is particularly extensively equipped. It has received all the upgrades of the latest model facelift, such as the AMG RIDE CONTROL+ suspension with new damping system. Also on board as standard are the adapted AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system and the MBUX multimedia system with special hybrid displays.
MBUX multimedia system with hybrid-specific displays
The standard Widescreen Cockpit features the MBUX multimedia system with AMG hybrid-specific displays and functions. In the instrument cluster, the driver can read the electric range, the power consumption, the output and torque of the electric motor and the temperatures of the battery and electric motor. High-quality graphics on the multimedia display visualise the power flow of the entire drive system, rpm, output, torque and temperature of the electric motor, as well as the temperature of the battery. The rear-seat passengers receive information on the energy flow as well as the power and torque of the electric motor on their optional multimedia display.
AMG Performance steering wheel in a twin-spoke design
The standard AMG Performance steering wheel with its distinctive twin-spoke design and seamlessly integrated control buttons also offers tangible and visible added value. The three rounded twin spokes combine strength with lightness. The round AMG steering wheel buttons impress with brilliant displays and their perfect turn-and-press operating logic. This allows important driving functions and all driving modes to be controlled without having to take one's hands off the steering wheel. As a new feature, it is possible to select the regeneration levels of the hybrid drive via the steering wheel buttons.
Many individual choices are available in the interior. Exclusive colours emphasise either the sporty or luxurious side of the new flagship model - for example the combination of Exclusive nappa leather in titanium grey pearl/black with contrasting topstitching in yellow or fine Exclusive nappa leather in truffle brown/black in the STYLE trim (diamond stitching). In addition there is a choice of five further colours in Exclusive nappa STYLE leather: sienna brown, classic red, yacht blue, deep white and neva grey. The seats in the front and rear are completely single-tone in the chosen interior colour, as are the armrests in the doors, the leather edging of the floor mats and the steering wheel rim.
The details of the AMG-specific Performance hybrid drive: combustion engine in the front, electric motor in the rear
In the AMG GT 63 S E PERFORMANCE, the 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine is combined with a permanently excited synchronous electric motor, a high-performance battery developed in Affalterbach and the fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive system. The combination of the 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine and electric motor generates a system output of 620 kW (843 hp) and a maximum system torque of more than 1,400 Nm. The driving performance of the most powerful series-production vehicle from Affalterbach to date is correspondingly impressive: acceleration from a standstill to 100 km/h takes just 2.9 seconds, and 200 km/h is reached in less than ten seconds. Acceleration only ends at 316 km/h.
The 150 kW (204 hp) electric motor is positioned at the rear axle, where it is integrated with an electrically shifted two-speed gearbox and the electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential in a compact electric drive unit (EDU). Experts refer to this layout as a P3 hybrid. The lightweight high-performance battery is also located in the rear above the rear axle. This compact design has numerous advantages:
The electric motor acts directly on the rear axle and can therefore convert its power more directly into propulsion - for that extra boost when moving off, accelerating or overtaking.
The power of the electric motor can inherently be applied at full torque, therefore particularly agile starting is possible.
In addition, the driver immediately experiences a noticeable performance increase thanks to the integrated, electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential: The hybrid model is even more agile when accelerating out of bends, and provides more traction and therefore more driving safety.
As slip at the rear axle increases, the drive power of the electric motor is also transferred to the front wheels as required for more traction. The mechanical connection of the fully variable all-wheel drive makes this possible by means of a propshaft and the drive shafts of the front wheels.
The positioning on the rear axle improves the weight as well as the axle load distribution in the vehicle and thus forms the basis for the convincing handling.
The AMG concept offers very high regeneration efficiency, as the system allows only minimal mechanical and hydraulic losses from the engine and transmission.
The automated two-speed transmission at the rear axle with its specially calibrated gear ratio ensures the spread from high wheel torque for agile starting to safe continuous output at higher speeds. An electric actuator engages second gear at around 140 km/h at the latest, which corresponds to the electric motor's maximum speed of around 13,500 rpm.
With the increase in performance due to the additional electric motor, the development team was also able to improve the efficiency of the entire vehicle in parallel - and achieve lower emissions as well as lower consumption.
Inspired by Formula 1, developed in Affalterbach: the AMG high-performance battery
When defining the electrification strategy, it was clear from the outset that all essential components would be developed in Affalterbach. At the heart of this is the AMG high-performance battery (HPB). Development of this lithium-ion battery was inspired by technologies that have already proven themselves under the toughest conditions in the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team's Formula 1 hybrid racing cars. In the course of development, there was a lively exchange of expert knowledge between the High Performance Powertrains (HPP) Formula 1 engine shop in Brixworth and Mercedes-AMG in Affalterbach. The AMG high-performance battery combines high power that can be called up frequently in succession with low weight to increase the overall performance of the vehicle. Added to this are the fast energy draw and the high power density. This means that during a brisk drive in hilly terrain, for example, drivers can immediately call on the full power potential on uphill stretches, while regeneration is strong when driving downhill.
70 kW continuous output and 150 kW peak output
The high-performance battery of the AMG GT 63 S E PERFORMANCE has a capacity of 6.1 kWh, 70 kW of continuous output and 150 kW of peak output for ten seconds. The low weight of only 89 kilograms allows the very high power density of 1.7 kW/kg. For comparison: conventional batteries without direct cooling of the cells achieve about half of this figure. Charging is via the 3.7 kW on-board AC charger, at a charging station, wallbox or household socket. The battery is designed for fast power delivery and draw, not for the longest possible range. Nevertheless, the electric range of 12 kilometres allows a practical operating radius, for example for quiet and emission-free driving from a residential area to the outskirts of the city or to the motorway.
The innovation push: the direct cooling of the battery cells
The basis for the high performance of the AMG 400 volt battery is the innovative direct cooling: for the first time, a high-tech coolant based on an electrically non-conductive liquid flows around all 560 cells and cools them individually. Every battery needs a defined temperature for optimum power delivery. If the battery becomes too cold or too hot, it noticeably loses power at times, or has to be regulated to avoid damage if the heat becomes excessive. The even temperature of the battery therefore has a decisive influence on its performance, service life and safety. Conventional cooling systems, which only cool with air or the entire battery pack indirectly with water, quickly reach their limits - especially as the requirements continue to increase due to cells with ever increasing energy density. If the thermal management does not fulfil its function optimally, the battery is at risk of ageing prematurely.
For the direct cooling, the AMG specialists had to develop new cooling modules that are only millimetres thin. Around 14 litres of coolant circulate from top to bottom through the entire battery past each cell with the help of a specially developed high-performance electric pump, also flowing through an oil/water heat exchanger attached directly to the battery. This conducts the heat into one of the vehicle's two low-temperature (LT) circuits, and from there to the LT radiator at the front of the car where it is released into the outside air. The system is designed to ensure even heat distribution in the battery.
The result is that the battery is always within a consistent, optimum operating temperature window averaging 45 degrees Celsius, no matter how often it is charged or discharged. It may well be that the average temperature is exceeded when driving at high speeds. The protection mechanisms are therefore configured so that the maximum performance can be obtained from the battery, with the temperature level subsequently lowered by direct cooling. Conventional cooling systems cannot cope with this, and the battery can no longer fully utilise its potential. That is not the case with the AMG high-performance battery: even during fast laps in hybrid mode on the race track, where acceleration (battery is discharged) and deceleration (battery is charged) are frequent, the energy storage system retains its high performance capacity.
Only effective direct cooling makes it possible to use cells with a very high power density. Thanks to this individual solution, the battery system is particularly light and compact. The low weight is also due to the material-saving busbar concept, and the lightweight yet strong crash structure of the aluminium housing. It ensures the highest level of safety.
Operating strategy: electrical power always available
The basic operating strategy is derived from the hybrid powerpack of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1 racing car. As in the top class of motorsport, maximum propulsion is always available when the driver needs it - for example, to accelerate powerfully out of corners or when overtaking. the electric power can always be called up and frequently reproduced via high regeneration performance and on-demand recharging. The independent battery concept enables the optimal compromise between maximum driving dynamics and contemporary efficiency. All components are perfectly coordinated: The performance gain can be experienced directly.
The seven AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving modes "Electric", "Comfort", "Sport", "Sport+", "RACE", "Slippery" and "Individual" are precisely configured for the new drive technology and thus provide a wide-ranging driving experience - from highly efficient to highly dynamic. The driving modes adjust important parameters such as the response of the drive system and transmission, the steering characteristic, the suspension damping or the sound. The modes can be selected using the rocker switch in the centre console or the AMG steering wheel buttons.
Usually, the Performance hybrid starts silently ("Silent Mode") in the "Comfort" driving mode when the electric motor is switched on. In the instrument cluster, the "Ready" icon signals that the vehicle is ready to drive. In addition, a powerful, sonorous start-up sound typical of AMG is emitted in the interior via the vehicle's loudspeakers as acoustic feedback showing readiness to get going. Slight pressure on the accelerator pedal is all it takes to set the AMG Performance hybrid in motion.
When driving on all-electric power, the legally required Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System warns the surroundings that the Performance hybrid is approaching. A specially composed low-frequency, speed-dependent AMG sound is emitted to the outside via single loudspeakers at the front and rear. The sound can also be heard at a subdued level in the interior, as acoustic feedback for the passengers. In the European Union the system is active up to 20 km/h, in the USA up to the equivalent of approx. 30 km/h. After that, the driving signal fades out harmoniously up to approx. 50 km/h.
At higher speeds, the customer can select the sound experience between "balanced" and "powerful" using the sound buttons in the centre console or on the steering wheel (recognisable by a frequency wave symbol): When driving on all-electric power, either a discreet or a powerful sound experience is generated. When the combustion engine starts, the selected setting influences the sound of the exhaust system. In every situation, one thing remains the same: under all conditions, the Performance hybrid is immediately recognisable as an AMG by its sound.
"Electric" driving mode: The focus is on the electric driving experience. All-electric driving is possible from standstill up to 130 km/h, with the combustion engine always switched off. The mechanical connection to the AMG Performance 4MATIC+ components means that all-wheel drive is always available: If the rear wheels suddenly have too much slip, the power of the electric motor is also transmitted to the front wheels via the propshaft and drive shafts. When the battery has run down or the driver requests more power, the intelligent operating control automatically switches to the "Comfort" driving mode and the combustion engine starts up to provide propulsion.
"Comfort" driving mode: the start-up is mostly electric. Combustion engine and electric motor run as demanded by the situation - with electric drive at low speeds, for example in residential areas or in the city centre, hybrid driving with combustion engine and electric motor in the countryside and on the motorway. Overall, the result is a harmonious and consumption-optimised driving impression, thanks in part to the early upshifts of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT-9G transmission. Suspension and steering are set up for an emphasis on comfort. The steering focus is on energy efficiency, so that fuel consumption and emissions can be reduced. The hallmark AMG sportiness and agility are retained.
"Sport" driving mode: starting with combustion engine and electric motor and situational interaction of the two drives. More boost from the electric motor is released. Sporty driving impression owing to more agile accelerator response, shorter shift times and earlier downshifts. A more dynamic suspension and steering setup.
"Sport+" driving mode: starting with combustion engine and electric motor and situational interaction of the two drives. Even higher boost performance. Extremely sporty character thanks to even more agile throttle response and targeted torque intervention during upshifts with cylinder deactivation for optimum shift times. Increased idle speed for faster starting. An even more dynamic set-up for suspension, steering and powertrain.
"RACE" driving mode: for highly dynamic driving on closed race tracks. In this mode, all the parameters are configured for maximum performance. starting with combustion engine and electric motor and situational interaction of the two drives. Full electric boost power from the electric motor to support the combustion engine during hard acceleration. Strong battery recharging at low power demand for maximum electrical availability.
"Slippery" driving mode: optimised for slippery road conditions, with reduced power and a flat torque curve. All-electric driving and regeneration adjustment are deactivated.
"Individual" driving mode: individual customisation of the drive, transmission, AMG DYNAMICS, chassis, steering and exhaust system.
The control of vehicle dynamics also benefits from the hybrid drive. Instead of braking intervention by ESP®, the electric motor can also control traction as soon as a wheel signals too much slip. To do this, the intelligent control system reduces the drive torque of the electric motor that is transferred to the wheel via the limited-slip rear differential. The result is that ESP® does not have to intervene at all, or only later. Advantage: the combustion engine can thus be operated with higher torque, which both improves agility afterwards and increases efficiency. In addition, the power otherwise "destroyed" during braking can be used to charge the battery.
Regeneration selectable in four stages
Because the high-performance battery is always in the optimum temperature window of around 45 degrees thanks to direct cooling, regeneration can also be optimised - normally a battery heats up strongly at high regeneration power, so that energy recovery needs to be limited.
Regeneration starts when drivers takes their foot off the accelerator pedal, i.e. in overrun mode without touching the brake pedal. This charges the battery and creates a strong braking torque - the wheel brakes are subjected to less wear or, depending on the regeneration level and traffic situation, do not have to be applied at all. The driver can select four different regeneration levels using the right-hand AMG steering wheel button. This applies in all driving modes with the exception of "Slippery", and the energy recovery is configured differently depending on the driving mode.
Level 0: The vehicle behaves similarly to a conventional combustion engine with manual transmission, where the clutch is disengaged, and rolls on with the least resistance when the accelerator is released. The regeneration level is very low, and only serves to maintain the vehicle's power supply. With the combustion engine switched off, friction losses in the drive train are reduced to a minimum.
Level 1: This is the standard setting at which regeneration is already noticeable to the driver, and corresponds approximately to the deceleration of a conventional combustion engine whose clutch is engaged.
Level 2: Stronger regeneration, the brake pedal hardly needs to be pushed when moving in traffic.
Level 3: Maximum energy recovery, making so-called "one-pedal" driving possible as in an all-electric car. Depending on the driving status, more than 100 kW of power can be fed back into the battery.
Special feature of the RACE driving mode: On the racetrack, the driver wants to squeeze the maximum time possible out of any braking action. In "RACE" driving mode, regeneration is automatically set at level 1 to allow the most reproducible vehicle behaviour possible at the limits.
Another advantage of regeneration is that the vehicle does not speed up when driving down steep hills. So the system works like an engine brake, but also feeds energy into the battery.
AMG 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine with twin-scroll turbochargers
As the new top model in the range, the AMG GT 63 S E PERFORMANCE benefits from the performance of the AMG 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine with 470 kW (639 hp) and a maximum torque of 900 Nm, which is available over a wide rpm band from 2500 to 4500 rpm. This harmonises perfectly with the electric motor, which delivers its maximum of 320 Nm right from the start.
Two twin-scroll turbochargers are partly responsible for the high power output, combining optimum response at low engine speeds with a high increase in power at higher engine speeds. In addition to this, the turbine housing is divided into two flow passages which run parallel to one another. Combined with two separate ducts in the exhaust manifold, this makes it possible to individually control the momentum of the exhaust gases acting on the turbine wheel. One duct is fed by the exhaust gases of the first and second cylinders of a cylinder bank, the other by the exhaust gases of the third and fourth cylinders. The aim is to prevent the individual cylinders from having mutually adverse effects on the gas cycle. This reduces the exhaust gas back-pressure and improves the gas exchange.
Belt-driven starter-generator supplies the ancillary units
The belt-driven starter-generator (RSG) combines the alternator and starter in one component, and has an output of 10 kW (14 hp). It starts the combustion engine and ensures the basic supply of the ancillary units such as air conditioning or driving lights, for example, when the vehicle is at a traffic light and the charge level of the high-voltage battery is no longer sufficient to support the low-voltage on-board electrical system. The RSG is particularly responsive because it is integrated into the 400-volt high-voltage electrical system.
AMG RIDE CONTROL+ suspension as standard, with wide spread between dynamism and comfort
The AMG RIDE CONTROL+ suspension is based on multi-chamber air suspension with automatic level control, combined with adaptive, electronically controlled adjustable damping. This damping system is completely new in the AMG GT 4-door Coupé models: for the first time, two so-called pressure relief valves are used. These continuously variable control valves, located outside the damper, allow the damping force to be adjusted even more precisely to different driving conditions and driving modes: one valve controls the rebound damping, i.e. the force that occurs when the wheel rebounds, and the other controls the compression damping when the wheel compresses. The rebound and compression stages are controlled independently of each other.
The AMG development engineers were able to significantly increase the spread between sportiness and comfort, among other things by widening the gap between the minimum and maximum damping force characteristics and by providing even greater flexibility in map design. Due to the special design of the valves, the damper reacts quickly and sensitively to changing road surfaces and driving conditions.
The driver can preselect the basic set-up via the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving modes: at the touch of a button, the handling characteristics change, for example, from full dynamics in "Sport+" mode to smooth cruising in the "Comfort" setting. In addition, the tuning can be adjusted in three stages independently of the driving modes via a dedicated button.
The AMG Performance hybrids also have the integrated AMG DYNAMICS vehicle dynamics control system. It influences the control strategies of ESP® (Electronic Stability Program), the all-wheel drive, and the electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential. This increases agility without negatively affecting the vehicle's stability.
Particularly noteworthy: AMG DYNAMICS determines how the vehicle should react. The system uses the available sensors, among other things, to ascertain the speed, lateral acceleration, steering angle and yaw rate. Thanks to an intelligent pilot-control principle, it is possible to anticipate how the driver wants the vehicle to behave, based on the driver's actions and on data from the sensors. Regulation is tailored to the dynamic driving competence of the driver – without any noticeable or disruptive interventions by the system. The driver gets a very authentic driving feel with high cornering dynamics and optimum traction, as well as high stability and predictable handling. Even experienced drivers receive optimum assistance without feeling patronised by the system.
AMG DYNAMICS "Basic" is assigned to the "Comfort" and "Electric" driving mode. The design results in a very stable ride with high yaw damping.
"Advanced" is activated in the "Sport" mode. The vehicle remains neutrally balanced. The reduced yaw damping and increased agility support dynamic manoeuvres such as driving on winding country roads.
"Pro" (abbreviation for "Professional") is part of the "Sport+" mode. In "Pro" the driver receives even more assistance for dynamic driving manoeuvres while agility and feedback from the road when cornering are further enhanced.
"Master" is coupled with the driving mode "RACE". "Master" mode is aimed at drivers who want to experience dynamism and the driving enjoyment on closed circuits. "Master" offers a slightly oversteering vehicle balance, more direct steering and more agile turn-in behaviour. In this way, "Master" ensures maximum agility and optimally exploits the dynamic potential of the "S" version. To activate "Master" mode, the driver must use the separate button in the centre console to switch ESP® to ESP® SPORT handling mode or ESP® OFF.
In the "Individual" driving mode, drivers can set the AMG DYNAMICS levels "Basic", "Advanced", "Pro" and "Master" themselves.
Good control and fade-resistant: the AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system
Neither are there any compromises when it comes to the brakes: In keeping with the extreme power values and the associated performance, the AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system with bronze-coloured 6-piston fixed callipers at the front and 1-piston floating callipers at the rear is fitted as standard. It is adapted to the high driving dynamics, and larger than in the models with only a combustion engine: the carbon-ceramic brake discs measure 420 x 40 millimetres at the front axle and 380 x 32 millimetres at the rear axle. The brake system impresses with very short braking distances as well as maximum stability and fade-resistance under heavy use. In addition, it scores with a long service life and a particularly fast response. Furthermore, the lightweight material saves additional weight and reduces the unsprung masses. Comfort features include hill starting assistance and priming/dry braking in wet conditions. With the ignition switched off and the vehicle at a standstill, the transmission automatically selects the parking position "P". Meanwhile, the electric parking brake releases automatically when pulling away.
New brand ambassador will.i.am and marketing campaign: "Everything but quiet"
Mercedes-AMG is also breaking new ground in communicating the new hybrid model. The US-American global star and entrepreneur will.i.am will act as a long-term partner and brand ambassador for the "Future of Driving Performance" vehicles with an electrified powertrain. The Black Eyed Peas co-founder and frontman, musician, producer and tech entrepreneur is the recipient of seven Grammy Awards, an Emmy Award, a CLIO Award and an Honorary Fellowship from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).
But that's not all: will.i.am is a true car enthusiast who extensively modifies his private vehicles with a high level of technical and aesthetic understanding. He has a keen eye for innovations that bridge the gap between culture and technology. He strives to improve things down to the last detail, extend boundaries and question the accepted until the optimum solution is found - just like the Mercedes-AMG team when developing the performance and sports car models. The long-term partnership between will.i.am and Mercedes-AMG focuses on projects relating to the company's electrified future and musical themes.
The new AMG GT 63 S E PERFORMANCE transports the DNA of AMG Driving Performance into an electrified future. Accordingly, "Everything but quiet" is the essential theme and claim of the campaign film for the presentation of the new model. The centrepiece is a 60-second film devised and directed by British star photographer and director Rankin as a sophisticated interplay of characteristics shared by the two game-changers will.i.am and the AMG GT 63 S E PERFORMANCE.

The most powerful AMG V8 series engine of all time, the most elaborate aerodynamics, the most intelligent material mix, the most expressive design, the most distinctive driving dynamics: For the new Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series, Affalterbach's engineers have raised the bar in the art of vehicle design. This new super sports car perfectly embodies the brand's rich tradition in motorsport, as well as its expertise in developing complete vehicles which impress in every respect. The result is an awe-inspiring vehicle with 720 hp from a Handcrafted AMG V8 engine with a flat-plane crankshaft, combined with active aerodynamics and a design stemming directly from the current AMG GT3 racing car.
At Mercedes-AMG, the Black Series has been synonymous with a very special type of car since 2006: uncompromisingly sporty, with an expressive design and the most direct technology transfer from motorsport to series production. Black Series models are exclusive automotive rarities. They are not developed to gather dust in collectors' garages, but for high-speed use on race tracks, despite being approved for road usage. The AMG GT Black Series represents a new highlight in this tradition: It features the most powerful Mercedes-AMG V8 series engine of all time.
In order to redefine the super sports car, the engine specialists in Affalterbach have once again extensively redeveloped the tried-and-tested 4.0-liter V8 biturbo unit - despite it already being renowned for excellent drivability, power delivery and torque. The specifications were clear: Significantly more power than the previous flagship model of the AMG GT family, an even more agile throttle response, maximum torque - all of which meant that a radical change was needed in the form of a new, flat-plane crankshaft.
"The new GT Black Series is our latest automotive highlight and continues a tradition established in 2006. The sixth iteration of its kind is another AMG milestone and impressive proof of the incredible development expertise in Affalterbach. I am proud of the team who have created this unique super sports car, which now represents the absolute peak of our successful GT family. The performance, appearance and driving dynamics of the GT Black Series are second to none. This project was a fantastic end to my work at AMG, for which I am truly thankful," says Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board at Mercedes-AMG GmbH.
Distinctive V8 engine design
The design of a V8 engine gives designers plenty of room to play with in one key element: the crank arrangement on the crankshaft. This influences the characteristics of the engine. There are usually two variants in V8 engines: the 'cross plane' where the crankpins of the four pairs of cylinders are at 90-degree angles to each other, which AMG has used in all previous V8 engines, or the 'flat-plane crankshaft', where all crankpins are on the same plane with a 180-degree offset ('flat-plane').
If you look at the front of a cross-plane crankshaft, you will be able to identify the cross that gives it its name. The benefits of these crankshafts are superb smoothness and high torque at low rotational speeds. The characteristic sound is another hallmark feature of the cross-plane V8 engine. In order to make optimal use of the displacement and the performance potential in the 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine, AMG engineers have essentially moved the exhaust side into the hot internal V of the two cylinder banks in the V8 engine.
Uniformly oscillating gas columns for even more power
Another way of increasing performance is by utilizing a flat-plane crankshaft. In the flat-plane V8 engine, it looks like an inline four-cylinder model – except for the wider crankpins, which have two connecting rods each in the V8. Ignition in the flat-plane V8 jumps from one cylinder bank to the next, which further improves the gas cycle. The characteristic firing order with a 180-degree crankshaft angle offset is 1-8-2-7 4-5-3-6. This creates uniformly oscillating gas columns in the exhaust tract and on the intake side, whose resonance can easily be used to increase performance. An even greater advantage is a more agile throttle response.
The most powerful V8 engine from Mercedes-AMG
Although the new GT Black Series engine is based on the AMG 4.0-liter V8 biturbo with dry sump lubrication, it has been given the new internal code of M178 LS2, due to its numerous modifications. It achieves 720 hp at 6,700-6,900 rpm and delivers a maximum torque of 590 lb-ft at 2,000-6,000 rpm. New camshafts and exhaust manifolds are adapted to the new firing order and further improve the gas cycle.
Both twin-scroll exhaust turbochargers are mounted in anti-friction bearings, as in the top-of-the-range four-door AMG GT Coupe, which optimizes their throttle response even further. However, in the GT Black Series, the turbochargers have been given a larger compressor wheel, meaning that both can deliver a total of 24.6 psi. By way of comparison: The figure is 19.6 psi for the AMG GT R. 7,000 rpm is not critical as a continuous speed, so the redline instead tops out at 7,200 rpm. The larger intercoolers guarantee they always keep the charge-air temperature within the best possible range. The unique aspects of the new engine are also reflected in the distinctive engine badge, which is rendered in black.
0-124 mph in under nine seconds
The new Handcrafted AMG engine in the GT Black Series gives it a completely unique character, which is not only reflected in the power delivery, but also in its very distinctive sound. The new engine also enables highly impressive driving performance: The Black Series shoots from 0 to 60 mph in 3.1 seconds, and to 124 mph (200 km/h) in under nine seconds. The top speed is 202 mph, although this is only sensible on closed-off racetracks.
Modified AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed transmission
Power is transferred to the rear wheels via the AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed dual clutch transmission, which is located on the rear axle in a transaxle arrangement for optimal weight distribution, as is the case for all AMG GT 2-door models. It has been specially modified for use in the AMG GT Black Series and adapted to the increased torque of 590 lb-ft. The previous limits governing shift performance and response time have been extended, making them more suitable for racetracks.
This all contributes to new and unique characteristics, as not only are the accelerator and engine response more agile - the drive programs, start-up characteristics and gear changes are, too. The Race Start function is now even more impressive, thanks to the increased starting revs, the more sensitive wheel slip control and the high-performance tires fit for the racetrack. Furthermore, the transmission cooling has been adapted to the tougher requirements, and the transmission ratios have also been slightly modified.
The 'torque tube' creates the connection between the engine and the transmission. It is made of carbon fiber and, at just 30.6 lbs, is around 40 percent lighter than its already weight-optimized aluminum counterpart in the AMG GT. As a structural component of the transaxle drivetrain, it creates an extremely torsionally stiff connection between the engine and the transmission. It allows for a direct connection of the drivetrain that is favorable to the driving dynamics and also plays a role in the vehicle's balanced weight distribution. The drive shaft which rotates inside is also made from lightweight carbon fiber.
Sophisticated aerodynamics for incredibly high driving dynamics
The sophisticated and optimized aerodynamics make a significant contribution to agile driving dynamics and stability on fast circuits. As with the AMG GT R and AMG GT R PRO, aerodynamics experts and designers have worked in close collaboration to enhance the aerodynamic characteristics of the GT Black Series. 'Form follows function' applies more than ever in the case of the new Black Series.
The similarity to the AMG GT3 and AMG GT4 racing cars is visually and technically stronger than ever before. It starts with the new, significantly larger radiator air inlet, which stems directly from the AMG GT3 racing car. The radiator trim has vertical slats in dark chrome, and now that the wheel arch coolers are also fed with air directly via the central inlet, there is no need for two additional outer air inlets in the front bumper. Semicircular flics optimize the flow of air, which not only increases downforce at the front axle, but also improves brake cooling. The 'air curtains' control and direct the flow towards the wheels. Together with the flics in front of the wheels, these enhancements reduce the drag coefficient and increase downforce. The new design language therefore combines maximum cool-air efficiency with lower air resistance and an increased level of downforce at the front.
The carbon-fiber front splitter has two manually adjustable settings (Street and Race – Race exclusively for use on racetracks), and can be adapted to meet various track requirements. When extended forward (Race position), a front diffuser in the shape of a reversed wing profile is created under the front section. Depending on the driving speed, this element is lowered even further by the rising negative pressure, which significantly accelerates the air flow on the underbody, creating a 'Venturi effect', which also draws the car closer to the road and increases downforce on the front axle. The driver can feel the benefits in the steering: The Black Series can be steered even more precisely when cornering at high speed and exhibits exceptional directional stability. Especially during fast cornering and under high lateral acceleration, the vehicle delivers an agile response with clear steering wheel feedback – while remaining easily controllable at all times. If the front diffuser is in the Race position, the downforce at the rear axle can also be increased further by the new rear spoiler design.
Hood with two large exhaust air openings to improve aero-performance
Another direct derivative from motorsport is the new carbon-fiber hood, with two large exhaust air outlets made from black finished carbon-fiber surfaces. The large outlets guide the warm air, which is fed from the diagonally positioned cooling pack, out of the engine compartment. This technology is also directly derived from motorsport and increases the overall downforce. At the same time the air resistance is reduced, and the air mass flow for cooling the engine is optimized. The air is also specifically guided around the A-pillars and side windows to the rear, where it increases the efficiency of the new rear spoiler design. The seamlessly integrated front fender vents, with five fins in body color and exhaust air openings behind the wheels in the front carbon-fiber fenders, help to increase downforce at the front axle by means of effective wheel arch ventilation. The air flowing around the vehicle is also optimized by the new, significantly larger and wider side sill panels with black carbon-fiber elements, which merge into vertical blades at the front and rear. Additional cooling air ducts are integrated into the side sill panels for brake cooling at the rear axle.
Two-stage rear spoiler concept
The rear view is characterized by the new rear bumper with a large diffuser, two rounded twin-tailpipe trims on the outside left and right, side wheel arch ventilation, and the innovative rear spoiler design. Both spoiler blades are made from carbon fiber, can be mechanically adjusted and therefore adapted to various track conditions. The second, lower positioned blade was made particularly small and narrow because this is ideal for the air arriving from the front of the car. The light yet robust carbon-fiber spoiler supports, painted matte black and specially designed with extensive simulations, also increase aerodynamic efficiency. They are bolted to the carbon-fiber rear hatch, which is also black.
Another fascinating detail: the adjustable flap in the upper blade. This active aerodynamic element is electronically adjusted by 20 degrees, to suit the driving situation and selected AMG DYNAMICS mode, while improving longitudinal and transverse dynamics. In a flat position, it reduces the air resistance, to help reach top speed more quickly. In the inclined position, the flap improves braking performance and cornering stability thanks to increased downforce at the rear axle.
Four different activation strategies can be run, depending on whether AMG DYNAMICS Basic, Advanced, Pro or Master has been selected. Some of these strategies also involve driving dynamics recognition, for example, Master: The flap is permanently inclined and extended up to 155 mph. When the speed exceeds 155 mph, it retracts in order to reduce the air resistance and thus reach top speed more quickly. However, if the driver brakes suddenly or steers into a corner, the flap immediately returns to its extended position in order to optimize braking and cornering, thanks to increased downforce and air resistance. The flap can also be retracted or extended by the driver using a separate button in the center console.
Extensive paneling on the underbody
The detailed aerodynamic work also includes the now almost fully paneled underbody, which must not only meet aerodynamic requirements, but thermal ones as well (heat dissipation). The flat underbody is equipped with specially designed longitudinal fins. These air channels have been meticulously optimized to ensure optimal air flow to the rear diffuser. The entire package accelerates air flow, significantly increasing downforce. All measures are coordinated and interact with the new rear spoiler design. The result of all these measures is a downforce level of well over 882 lbs at 155 mph.
Lightweight and robust carbon-fiber, as far as the eye can see
The lightweight carbon-fiber roof, with a lowered center, as well as the carbon-fiber rear hatch with small spoiler lip and larger rear windshield made from lightweight glass, are all key components of the 'intelligent material mix' and 'lightweight construction'. Moving to the front of the car, the glass used to make the laminated front windshield is also lightweight. The coiled carbon-fiber transmission mount is another exclusive Black Series component. Additional carbon- fiber shear panels in the front section, underbody and rear stiffen the entire aluminum body shell structure, together with the lightweight integral carrier and the carbon-fiber cross tunnel, making the body shell even more stable. The elements form a connected network and increase the high driving precision of the Black Series in all driving maneuvers. The carbon-fiber shear panel under the engine is connected to the integral carrier and stiffens the entire front section and steering system, making the steering noticeably more precise and further stabilizing the front axle. The integral carrier at the front axle is exclusively made for the Black Series using a lightweight aluminum construction.
The standard ceramic high-performance compound brake system with black painted brake calipers and white lettering is also characterized by low weight and high performance. Special brake pads and rotors together with modified brake cooling guarantee optimal and non-fading deceleration as well as high-precision brake-application. The standard light- alloy forged wheels also contribute to weight reduction.
AMG coil-over suspension with adaptive adjustable damping
A double wishbone design enhances the wheel with high camber and toe-in stability. This enables high cornering speeds and gives the driver optimized road feel when cornering at the extreme limits. Wishbones, steering knuckles and hub carriers on the front and rear axle are made entirely from forged aluminum in order to reduce the unsprung mass. The spherical bearings on the upper and lower wishbones of the rear axle come straight from motorsport. Their design means they have no play, which means toe-in and camber do not change even under high loads. The GT Black Series therefore allows for precise steering, provides clear steering feedback and thus delivers better cornering performance.
As with the AMG GT R, an AMG coil-over suspension with adjustable spring preload is used in the Black Series, with technology adapted to meet the specific requirements for extreme race track use with high damping forces. The technology from motorsport is combined with the AMG RIDE CONTROL continuously variable, adaptive damping system. The system is electronically controlled and automatically adapts the damping on each wheel to the current handling situation, the speed and the road conditions. The damping characteristics are modulated rapidly and precisely by two separate valves for the rebound and compression forces in the dampers. These valves are new and are also based on motorsport technology. They react in an even more agile manner to fast suspension movements. A harder damping rate, for example when cornering and braking, effectively reduces rolling movements. The continuously variable adjustment of the damping to suit the current speed also ensures the best possible road contact and thus enhances safety, even at high speeds.
The driver can also adjust the adaptive damping characteristics at the touch of a button in the AMG DRIVE UNIT or by using the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive modes. Three modes are available: "Comfort", "Sport" and "Sport Plus". The modified logic means that there is an even better trade-off. 'Comfort' and 'Sport' are the right choice for public roads. In 'Sport', the damping is firmer, with a sportier body connection and less comfort - and can also be chosen for race tracks if more slippery track conditions prevail as a result of wet conditions. 'Sport Plus' is ideal for use on racetracks, as it has a special feature: The system automatically recognizes the quality of the track surface, i.e. whether the car is being driven on a flat Grand Prix course like Hockenheim or a bumpy track like the Nürburgring North Loop. It then automatically adapts the level of electronic damping in 'Sport Plus'. To develop this logic, the Black Series was tailored to a wide range of different track types and the adaptation perfected.
Additional Carbon-fiber to reduce the suspension weight
The front axle is equipped with a dual adjustable sway bar made of lightweight carbon-fiber. The sway bar has a short and firm connection as its default setting. Its counterpart at the rear axle is made of steel, has 3-way adjustment, and saves weight thanks to its hollow tube design. From the default "central" position, it can be adjusted to one level harder (short connection) or softer (long connection). The carbon-fiber shear panel in the rear underbody enhances the high driving precision. This lightweight and rigid element stiffens the rear-end structure and as a result makes the body shell even more stable. The electronically controlled dynamic engine and transmission mounts were also retuned to further increase the agility and deliver high-precision response and clear feedback.
Other suspension measures include the wide track at the front and rear, and the manually adjustable camber at the front and rear axles. This means that exceptionally high camber values can be set, which are only used for the purpose of increasing performance in motorsport on closed-off race tracks.
A Pilot Sport Cup 2 R MO tire, specially customized for the Black Series, has been developed in collaboration with Michelin®. As is the custom in motorsport, this high-performance tire is exclusively available for Mercedes-AMG in two compounds: The standard tire equipped from the factory is the soft-compound Michelin® Pilot Sport Cup 2 R MO1A, whose side flank enhances the silhouette of the AMG GT Black Series. A 'hard compound' is also available as a retrofitting option for race track use at higher temperatures. As well as the Michelin® Pilot Sport Cup 2 R MO2 designation, it can be identified by the tire compound available from the AMG Performance Center, with the hallmark motorsport sticker from the French tire manufacturer. The sizes are 10 J x 19 wheels with 285/35 ZR 19 tires (front) and 12 J x 20 wheel with 335/30 ZR 20 tires (rear).
Grip to the power of nine: AMG TRACTION CONTROL
For use on closed-off racetracks in ESP OFF mode, the AMG TRACTION CONTROL enables the driver to get individual support for controlling the immense power of the Black Series – and without any ESP brake intervention whatsoever. The level of support can be fine-tuned, providing the ideal level of assistance for each driver and each track. The AMG TRACTION CONTROL has been extensively tailored to meet the requirements of the new Black Series and allows preselection of one of nine slip settings on the live rear axle. Control is exclusively via corresponding maps in the engine electronics and without any intervention in the ESP system, as is also the case with the GT3 racing car.
It is operated via a separate adjuster in the central console. It can also be operated while wearing racing gloves in its central position in the dashboard. Depending on the setting, the system permits more or less slip on the rear wheels – very helpful in a variety of road conditions. Level 1 is programmed for driving in the wet with high safety reserves. Level 9 allows maximum slip on the rear axle. Each setting is displayed on the adjuster itself and in the instrument cluster's central display.
The AMG TRACTION CONTROL has a major advantage over conventional systems in that it anticipates situations with the help of a friction coefficient evaluator and other data processed by a control unit within a fraction of a second. The maximum permissible drive slip on the rear wheels is calculated depending on the selected AMG TRACTION CONTROL level. When the wheels reach this level of slip during acceleration, the traction control modulates the engine output so that this level is not exceeded and the vehicle continues accelerating with this specified slip. The system's algorithms have been developed as a double control variable model and not only control the engine's drive torque, but also the locking level of the electronic differential lock.
Exclusive orange contrasting color
The interior design emphasizes the pole position of the AMG GT Black Series: Exclusive nappa leather is combined with sporty DINAMICA microfiber in black with orange contrasting topstitching. The instrument panel and the newly designed lightweight door panels, which are now equipped with loop pull handles instead of conventional handles, are trimmed in black DINAMICA microfiber. Further orange contrasting topstitching, matte black carbon-fiber trim and the Interior Night Package add further interior highlights. AMG carbon-fiber bucket seats (not available in the USA, Canada and China) combine low weight with optimum lateral support. In the USA, Canada and China, the Black Series is equipped with AMG Performance seats as standard. The interior is also optionally available with silver contrasting topstitching.
Displays with AMG-specific graphics
The AMG GT Black Series features the fully digital instrument displays from the AMG GT family with an instrument cluster measuring 12.3 inches in front of the driver, and a 10.25-inch multimedia display on the center console. The instrument cluster offers different designs with three AMG-specific display styles: 'Classic', 'Sporty' or 'Supersport'. The 'Supersport' view with a central rev counter features extensive additional information, such as a prompt to shift up in manual transmission mode, the 'shift light'. The visualizations on the multimedia display enable further vehicle functions to be experienced, e.g. with animated presentations of the driving assistance, vehicle and communication systems.
At your fingertips: display buttons in the center console
The innovative, colored display buttons in the V-shaped center console integrate the display and control of transmission logic, suspension, ESP, exhaust system, rear spoiler flap and start/stop function. The TFT display buttons use intuitive symbols to show their functions and are easy to operate with a small tap of the finger. As they have a mechanical pressure point, they can also be operated while wearing racing gloves. The display buttons are supplemented by the two rocker switches for the drive programs and volume control of the audio system.
Control in an instant: the AMG Performance steering wheel
The AMG Performance steering wheel is also adopted from the AMG GT family. It is characterized by its sporty design, a flattened bottom section with a heavily contoured rim and intuitive operation. The steering wheel rim is fully trimmed in DINAMICA microfiber, while the steering wheel badge exclusively features the Black Series lettering, along with the AMG logo. The aluminum steering wheel shift paddles for manual gear changes enable even sportier driving. The integrated Touch Control buttons can be used to control the instrument cluster and the multimedia display by means of horizontal and vertical finger swipes.
As standard, the AMG DRIVE UNIT steering wheel buttons also have a round controller with an integrated display, as well as two vertically positioned colored display buttons with switches. The AMG drive programs can be activated using the right controller. The selected setting is shown on the color LCD display directly integrated in the controller.
The two freely configurable display buttons and the additional switches on the left side enable further AMG functions to be controlled directly on the steering wheel. This means that the driver can concentrate fully on high-speed driving without having to take their hands off the wheel. Each required function can be depicted by a display icon, which the driver can set using the respective switch so the two individually preferred AMG functions can be defined exactly and the settings changed with just a tap of the finger.
The AMG Interior Night Package is also included as standard equipment. In this package, the shift paddles, steering wheel spokes and seat insert in the AMG Performance seats are finished in high-gloss black, while the door sill panels are finished in black brushed stainless steel, further emphasizing the car's sportiness.

Affalterbach – 363 races, 137 podium finishes, 151 class wins and 53 overall wins: the record of the Mercedes-AMG GT4 since its market launch in 2018 is quite impressive. In the past two years, the ‘little brother’ of the Mercedes-AMG GT3 advanced to one of the most successful cars in the booming GT4 segment worldwide. So far, the performance and sports car brand from Affalterbach has delivered more than 120 examples of the race car to Customer Racing Teams all over the world. With the new edition of the GT4 that will be racing globally at tracks from March 2020 onwards, Mercedes-AMG even further extends the already high level of competitiveness of its successful model.
Improved brake and engine cooling
The particular advantages of the new Mercedes-AMG GT4 can be found in its optimised brake cooling around the front axle as well as enhanced engine cooling. Both the enlarged brake air inlet as well as the dimensionally stable brake air lines with larger diameter prevent the brake components from overheating. As a result, they ensure better driveability as well as considerably reduced wear of the brakes that are under particular load during endurance races. Thanks to a new carbon brake air duct, adapted heat protection and optimised brake calliper adapters, the airflow through the thermally affected parts has been improved. A newly developed brake disc on the front axle, aimed at reliability and longevity, complements the optimised brake cooling. The re-arranged oil cooler contributes to an even more effective cooling of the proven AMG 4.0 litre V8 biturbo engine, just like the new carbon exhaust air duct and the newly shaped edge on the bonnet, made of natural fibre enforced material. As a result, the Mercedes-AMG GT4 can reliably deliver its performance, even in extremely hot conditions.
New light concept
The update of the Mercedes-AMG GT4 also includes optimised head and rear lights, identical to the corresponding units on the Mercedes-AMG GT3. Their design is in line with the current Mercedes-AMG GT road cars. Next to the fresh facelift look, the new light concept also comes with a practical purpose: the new LED high performance headlights provide considerably better illumination of the track. In darkness or in poor visibility, this leads to decisive advantages for the drivers in terms of safety and performance.
Optimises handling for the teams
Another optimisation are the modified track rods on the rear axle that are also similar to those used on the new GT3 model and that come with a significantly extended longevity. As a result, the Mercedes-AMG GT4 that has, among others, already racked up three class wins in the Nürburgring 24-hour race, is even better prepared for endurance races in the toughest conditions. The integration of an enlarged brake fluid tank, optimised with the particular requirements in endurance races in mind, is also one of the novelties of the Mercedes-AMG GT4 for the year 2020.
Highest safety standards
In addition to the further development of the exterior and the vehicle technology, there is also a range of qualities that the Mercedes-AMG GT4 has stood out for from its earliest days, such as, for instance, the particularly high safety standards of the vehicle. The roll cage of high-tensile steel has been bolted to the aluminium space frame and a recovery hatch has been integrated into the roof of the car. The carbon driver safety cell with integrated headrest provides a considerably higher level of protection than usual race seats. A powerful fire extinguishing system complements the comprehensive safety concept. User- and service friendliness are also the characteristics of the proven competition electronics of the Mercedes-AMG GT4. For instance, the car comes with a competition-specific traction control and a multi-adjustable ABS. They are based on GT3 technology, just like the sequential competition gearbox with adjustable differential. The suspension with double wishbones and shock absorbers with adjustable bounce and rebound ensures a highly precise handling with unmistakable response. The innovative torque control of the V8 biturbo engine is a guarantee for accuracy and exact driveability. Drivers of all skill levels quickly build up confidence in the vehicle as a result.
Market launch in the 2020 motorsport season
The market launch of the new Mercedes-AMG GT4 will follow in March, 2020 once the homologation has been completed. Orders for new cars can be placed with immediate effect. As the basic construction and the key components of the new edition of the GT4 are based on the current model, all the Mercedes-AMG GT4 built so far can be brought to the level of the new homologation (valid from March, 2020) without limitation and any problems thanks to a cost-effective update package.
Stefan Wendl, head of Mercedes-AMG Customer Racing: “When we entered the GT4 segment two years ago, it was our aim to build a car that was capable of winning right away. Looking at the achievements of the Mercedes-AMG GT4, we have succeeded in doing so in an impressive way. In order to enable our Customer Racing Teams to accomplish such top achievements at the race track in the future as well and to be prepared in the best way for the challenges in newly entered markets like Asia and South America, we have now decided to update the Mercedes-AMG GT4. The new edition combines performance, safety and economical aspects like no other car in this segment and has been tailor-made to meet the requirements of the customer teams. With its powerful V8 biturbo engine, the new Mercedes-AMG GT4 also guarantees plenty of fun away from the major international racing stage, be it during track days or in race series with open classes. The course for a successful future in the GT4 category has been set.”

Affalterbach. Sporty, stylish, intelligent and dynamic: The new CLA 35 4MATIC (combined fuel consumption 7.3-7.2 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions 167-164 g/km)[1] is the latest point of entry to the world of Mercedes-AMG and is more strongly lifestyle-oriented. The four-door coupé shares the progressive technology with the A-Class produced in Affalterbach, but is even bolder with its iconic design and the intelligent MBUX interior assistant. The agile high torque 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine delivers 225 kW (306 hp), which is variably distributed to all four wheels via the 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and the all-wheel drive. The sporty driving performance (acceleration from 0-100 km/h in 4.9 seconds) is linked with a wide spread of the driving experience - from very sporty to comfortable on long journeys.
"With its iconic design and agile driving dynamics, the new CLA 35 is an attractive offer for a young, active and lifestyle-conscious target group. These customers define their requirements very clearly: They expect exciting design from their vehicle alongside superior performance and inspiring handling characteristics. The new CLA 35 embodies just this attitude to life – and enables stepping in to the fascinating world of AMG Driving Performance in a particularly emotional way", says Tobias Moers, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.
Icon with a slim sporty waistline: the exterior design
The iconic design of the CLA Coupé is one of the main reasons for purchasing the car. The AMG designers therefore more or less kept the basic form with wide wheel arches and a slim sporty waistline. The two powerdomes on the bonnet were also adopted as sporty details. By way of contrast, the new radiator grille with the classic twin louvres and the AMG Line front apron with flics on the air inlets are typical distinctive features of the CLA 35 4MATIC. Other distinctive features include trim elements in silver chrome on the louvres in the outer air inlets. From a side view, the aerodynamically optimised 18-inch light-alloy wheels in twin-spoke design (19-inch optionally available) and the accentuated side sill panels catch the eye. The rear view is dominated by the rear apron with a new diffuser insert, the small spoiler lip on the boot and the two round tailpipe trims on the left and right. The two-piece, narrow tail lamps and the number plate housed in the bumper make the rear of the CLA look especially wide.
Sporty interior with MBUX infotainment system
Frameless doors open to an interior with a high-tech ambience where quality and elegance meet fully digital displays. This interior optionally stages the ambient lighting in 64 colours. Another characteristic feature are the seat covers which are available in ARTICO man-made leather with DINAMICA microfibre in black with red contrasting stitching and red seat belts or in ARTICO mad-made leather in black/digital grey. Red piping on the microfibre DINAMICA trim element and ventilation nozzles with a red ring add further accents.
The combination of sporty design and sophisticated details is also featured in the MBUX infotainment system with its innovative operating and display concept. In the new CLA 35 4MATIC too MBUX replaces the previous COMAND systems and creates an even closer connection between the vehicle, driver and passengers. Emotionally appealing presentations underline the clear control structure and feature brilliant maximum-resolution 3D graphics. Visually, the two displays under one shared glass cover blend into a Widescreen Cockpit and as a central element consequently emphasise the horizontal orientation of the interior design.
With the new optional MBUX interior assistant, select infotainment functions can be operated touchlessly and the reading light can be switched on and off. The assistant differentiates between driver and passenger interaction and recognises certain hand positions and movements. The interaction area for the MBUX interior assistant is in front of the media display up to the centre console, including the touchpad between the driver and the front-seat passenger.
The MBUX interior assistant recognises movement toward the various operating elements of the infotainment system. The operator's seat is enlarged on the media display if one’s hand is moved toward the touchscreen. The most suitable operating elements are automatically pre-selected. In the Radio and Media menu, the MBUX interior assistant reduces the number of operating steps. In the Navigation menu, the system fades in the navigation as soon as the hand moves to operate the touchscreen or touchpad, so that a symbol is selected directly. When displaying the camera image, as soon as the hand moves toward the touchscreen the MBUX interior assistant enables the four camera operating symbols from the 360-degree camera to be directly faded in. This means that the front, rear, right or left camera view can be directly selected.
And needless to say, the CLA 35 4MATIC also comes with trailblazing voice control, activated with the words "Hey Mercedes". Thanks to artificial intelligence, MBUX recognises and understands nearly all sentences from the fields of infotainment and vehicle operation, even if they are expressed indirectly.
Fully digital instrument cluster with three AMG display styles
The customer can choose between the three AMG display styles "Classic", "Sport" and "Supersport" for the instrument cluster. The "Supersport" mode is particularly striking with a central, round rev counter and additional information presented in the form of bars to the left and right of the rev counter: with a three-dimensional perspective, they reach far into the background to an artificial horizon. Via the AMG menu, the driver can call up various special displays such as Warm-up, Set-up, G-Force and Engine Data.
Touchscreen multimedia display and new centre console
The touchscreen multimedia display also emphasises the dynamic character with individual AMG displays such as visualisation of the driving programs, AMG TRACK PACE and telemetry data.
The AMG-specific centre console in piano lacquer finish with standard touchpad has additional buttons that control the functions ESP®, manual transmission mode and Adaptive Damping System. In conjunction with the optional leather package, it features a silver chrome surround.
New AMG steering wheel generation with optional steering wheel buttons as standard
The new generation of AMG steering wheels provides the perfect link between the driver and the vehicle. The steering wheel rim with a flattened lower section, perforated leather in the grip area and red contrasting topstitching is both attractive and pleasant to the touch. The galvanised steering wheel gearshift paddles allow an even sportier driving style with manual gear shifting.
The built-in Touch Control buttons, familiar from other model series, are a new feature. The active distance assistant DISTRONIC and the TEMPOMAT cruise control can be adjusted on the control panels on the left. The control panels on the right are used to activate the voice control and telephone, and to regulate the sound volume, music selection and other functions of the infotainment system.
The steering wheel with the innovative AMG steering wheel buttons is available as an option. These consist of a round controller with an integrated display beneath the right-hand steering-wheel spoke, plus two vertically positioned colour display buttons with switches beneath the left-hand steering-wheel spoke. The AMG drive programs are actuated directly via the controller. With the two freely configurable display buttons and the additional switches, further AMG functions can be controlled within easy reach, directly on the steering wheel.
Reinforced body-in-white with increased torsional stiffness
Specific measures to strengthen the front section of the bodyshell form the basis for the precise turn-in ability and the toe and camber stability of the chassis components, even when driving at speed. A so-called "shear panel", a bolted aluminium plate under the engine, increases the torsional stiffness of the front section of the CLA 35, too. Two additional diagonal braces at the front of the underbody also reduce torsion and increase the stiffness.
New four-cylinder turbo engine with output of 225 kW (306 hp)
The 2.0-litre turbo engine is a new development and is based on the M 260 four-cylinder engine in the new A-Class. The new drive boasts a spontaneous response to accelerator pedal commands, high tractive power (400 Nm max. torque from 3,000 rpm), a supremely lively response and an emotional engine sound. The crankcase made of high-strength, lightweight die-cast aluminium reduces the vehicle weight where it matters most for driving dynamics.
A twin-scroll turbocharger is used for turbocharging. It combines optimum responsiveness at low engine speeds with a strong power increase at higher speeds. The housing of the twin-scroll turbocharger is divided into two parallel ducts. Together with two separate exhaust ducts in the exhaust manifold, this makes it possible to channel the exhaust gases separately on the turbine wheel.
This results in a further advantage of twin-scroll technology, i.e. minimisation of the mutually adverse effects of the individual cylinders on the gas cycle. The exhaust gas back pressure is reduced and gas exchange and engine efficiency are improved.
Numerous engine measures increase efficiency
The high technological standards of the new four-cylinder engine are also underscored by numerous efficiency-enhancing measures. These include CAMTRONIC variable valve control, intelligent thermal management for engine and oil, high-precision piezo injectors and multi-spark ignition. In production, the patented CONICSHAPE®cylinder honing reduces internal engine friction and also increases efficiency.
The AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7G dual-clutch transmission also contributes to the agile and dynamic character of the new CLA 35 4MATIC. The gear ratios have been configured so that the driver experiences very spontaneous acceleration in all speed ranges, combined with fast shifting and optimum connections when shifting up.
The standard RACE-START function allows maximum acceleration from stationary and is a highly emotional experience. The functions of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7G transmission are rounded off with a temporary M mode activated by operating the steering wheel shift paddles in any driving mode, and with the manual transmission mode "M" for manual gear shifting with the shift paddles.
AMG Performance 4MATIC variable all-wheel drive
Dynamism, agility and performance – these three attributes characterise the standard all-wheel drive of the new AMG CLA 35 4MATIC. The variable AMG Performance 4MATIC combines the best possible traction with lots of driving fun. The torque distribution is infinitely variable to suit the dynamic handling requirements. The spectrum ranges from front-wheel drive only to a 50:50 percent distribution to the front and rear axles.
A multi-disc clutch that is integrated in the rear axle transmission is responsible for the variable torque distribution between the front and rear axles. It is controlled electro-mechanically. The influencing factors for torque distribution are not only the driving speed, the lateral and longitudinal acceleration and the steering angle, but also the difference in rotational speed between the individual wheels, the gear selected and the accelerator position.
The main advantages of electro-mechanical control over an electro-hydraulic system relate to more refined driving dynamics – primarily due to the significantly faster response and speed-independent actuation of the discs over the entire adjustment range.
As long as ESP® is activated, the 4MATIC system stays in "Comfort" mode. As soon as the driver presses the "ESP® SPORT Handling" or "ESP® OFF" button, the 4MATIC system switches to "Sport" mode – for even more agile handling and even higher stability limits.
Fivedriving programs: vehicle characteristics with wide spread
The five AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive programs "Slippery", "Comfort", "Sport", "Sport +" and "Individual" enable a wide range of vehicle characteristics from comfortable to dynamic. They change relevant parameters, such as the response of the engine and transmission.
The new "Slippery" drive program is optimised for low-grip, icy road conditions, with reduced power and a flat torque curve. Smooth gear changes and earlier upshifting support the driving impression characterised by stability.
The "Comfort" program stands for comfortable and fuel-efficient driving, for example thanks to very early upshifts. Suspension and steering are set up for an emphasis on comfort.
"Sport" and "Sport+" place the focus on agility and driving pleasure with sporty engine and transmission tuning. The sound of the turbo engine is more striking. "Sport+" is particularly emotional with double-declutching during downshifts and partial cylinder cut-off via a brief and precisely defined retardation of ignition and injection at full load.
The "Individual" drive program enables the individual parameters to be selected and saved according to personal preferences. In addition, the gliding function is available in the "Reduced" and "Moderate" drive settings.
AMG DYNAMICS: more agility with high stability
As a new feature in the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive programs, the new CLA 35 4MATIC comes with AMG DYNAMICS. This integrated dynamic handling control system extends the stabilising functions of ESP® with agilising interventions according to the driver's wishes. During dynamic cornering, imperceptible braking intervention on the rear inside wheel creates a defined yawing moment about the vertical axis. The effect: the CLA 35 4MATIC steers spontaneously and very precisely.
The different manifestations of AMG DYNAMICS are called "Basic" and "Advanced". On the multimedia display, when a drive program is selected, the new AMG DYNAMICS symbol is displayed together with the corresponding additional information.
"Basic" is assigned to the "Slippery" and "Comfort" drive programs. In this case, the CLA 35 4MATIC shows very stable handling with high damping of the yaw rate.
"Advanced" is activated in the programs "Sport" and "Sport+". The CLA 35 4MATIC remains neutrally balanced. The lower yaw damping, lower steering angle requirement and enhanced agility support dynamic manoeuvres such as driving on winding country roads
In the "Individual" drive program the driver can set the AMG DYNAMICS levels individually.
AMG RIDE CONTROL suspension with specific components
The layout of the AMG RIDE CONTROL suspension forms the solid straight-line stability and the highly dynamic cornering performance. The longitudinal and transverse dynamics are perfectly coordinated.
A McPherson suspension strut construction is fitted on the front axle. Suspension is taken care of by one wishbone below the wheel centre, one spring strut and one tie rod respectively. The special axle geometry reduces the influence of the drive on the steering – for high comfort and agile handling. The new wishbone in aluminium reduces the unsprung masses enabling a more sensitive response from the springs. The AMG-specific front steering knuckle has a radially bolted brake calliper – a technology originating from motorsport.
The 4-link rear axle is connected rigidly with the body via a subframe. Three transverse arms and the trailing arm, the wheel carrier and the bearings from the proven A 45 4MATIC are used on each rear wheel. This ensures maximum driving stability and agility.
Adaptive damping system with three modes
The optional Adaptive Damping System enables the driver to choose between three different suspension control modes. The spectrum ranges from comfort-focused to sporty. The system operates fully automatically, adapting the damping forces for each wheel according to the driving situation and road conditions. This happens within milliseconds and is infinitely variable, with a wide spread of damping characteristics. The result is that ride comfort and agility are enhanced in equal measure.
Robust high-performance brake system
The high-performance braking system ensures fade-resistant deceleration and short braking distances. Its dimensions correspond to the well-proven A 45 4MATIC model. The front axle is fitted with new 4-piston monoblock fixed callipers and 350 millimetre brake discs, the rear axle with 1-piston sliding callipers and 330 millimetre brake discs. The discs are internally ventilated and perforated to better dissipate heat and prevent brake fading, even with extreme use. The silver-painted brake callipers have black AMG lettering.
Steering with special rack and variable ratio
The speed-sensitive, electro-mechanical sports power steering supports a sporty driving style with its direct turn-in ability. It has a special rack with variable transmission ratio and two characteristic curves: depending on which drive program the driver has selected, it provides taut and sporty or more comfortable steering feedback. The rigid mounting in the integral carrier connects the steering even better with the body and thus increases steering precision.
AMG exhaust system with exhaust flap for sound modulation
The exhaust system features an automatically controlled exhaust flap as standard. Depending on the drive program selected, it modulates the sound from balanced to powerful.
Data logger for use on the race track: AMG TRACK PACE
AMG TRACK PACE is also available as an option for the new CLA 35 4MATIC. The virtual race engineer is part of the MBUX infotainment system and permanently records more than 80 vehicle-specific data (e.g. speed, acceleration) while driving on a racetrack. On top of this, lap and sector times are displayed, as well as the respective difference to a reference time. Because specific display elements are shown in green or red, the driver is able to see at a glance without reading numbers whether they are currently faster or slower than the best time.
After putting in some fast laps, the driver can use the data to analyse and, if necessary, improve their driving skills. In addition, acceleration and deceleration values (e.g. 0-100 km/h, ¼ mile, 100-0 km/h) can be measured and saved. Thanks to a newly developed algorithm which determines the vehicle position as precisely as possible, AMG TRACK PACE even detects when the circuit has been left or it has been shortened. This is done using GPS data as well as the sensors available in the vehicle (acceleration, gyroscope, steering angle, wheel speeds).
The data are displayed on the multimedia display, in the instrument cluster and on the optional head-up display. Well-known racetracks like, for example, the Nürburgring or Spa Francorchamps, are already stored. Furthermore, it is also possible to record one’s own circuits. The map display can be switched from 2D to 3D and updated online.
The MBUX Augmented Reality function also allows the ideal line of a stored racetrack to be displayed on the multimedia display or optional head-up display, allowing the driver to improve lap times with a virtual instructor on board.

Affalterbach. This combination is just irresistible and is limited to 750 units: Mercedes-AMG is combining its top model brimming with motorsport technology with the freedom of the open-air driving experience – crowning the model portfolio of open-top sports cars. The new AMG GT R Roadster (combined fuel consumption: 22.8 mpg (12.4 l/100 km); combined CO2 emissions: 284 g/km[1]) is just as much at home on winding racetracks as it is on prestigious boulevards or beautiful coastal roads. With its powerful drive and expressive design it addresses a new, lifestyle-oriented target group which lives life to the full. The 430 kW/585 hp V8 biturbo, the adjustable coil-over suspension with active rear axle steering, the active aerodynamics and the intelligent lightweight construction form the foundations for highly dynamic handling characteristics. And like the other roadster models the open AMG GT R also has the triple-layer fabric soft top with a lightweight structure consisting of aluminium, magnesium and steel.
“The new AMG GT R Roadster is far more than the combination of the thrilling vehicle dynamics of the GT R with the special flair of our GT Roadsters. It is the essence of two worlds, blending to deliver our brand pledge, Driving Performance, in a very special way. With our GT R Roadster we have without doubt once again developed a brand-defining sports car. It too embodies Mercedes-AMG in form, function and vehicle dynamics and enriches our GT family with a highly exclusive variant limited to 750 units”, says Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Management Board of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.
The AMG 4.0-litre V8 biturbo in the AMG GT R Roadster delivers an output of 430 kW (585 hp) and maximum torque of 700 Nm. This is available over a wide engine speed range from 2100 to 5500 rpm. The eight-cylinder power unit delivers muscular performance in all engine speed ranges, combined with high efficiency. A sprint from standstill to 62 mph is absolved in 3.6 seconds. The dynamic power delivery continues right up to the top speed of 197 mph.
Wants to stay ahead even at a standstill: the exterior design
The low-slung front section and the forward-inclined AMG-specific radiator grille create a distinctive “shark nose” impression and make the car appear to sit lower on the road. At the same time, this shape lowers the vehicle’s back-pressure point, enhancing the flow of cooling air and the car’s aerodynamic performance.
The standard-fit LED High Performance headlamps strengthen the AMG GT family tie with their light signature. A tri-functional, arched light guide takes on the functions of daytime running light, navigation light and turn signals. The multi-chamber reflector system with three single reflectors each for dipped beam and main beam not only ensures optimal illumination of the roadway, but also gives the AMG GT Roadster a sporty, dynamic look which gains even more optical depth as the result of the black background.
The V-shaped arrow-like appearance of the front end also enhances the dynamic looks, thus embodying the uninhibited forwards thrust of the AMG GT R Roadster even before it moves. The front apron in jet wing design and the front splitter emphasise the car’s width. The large outer air inlets in the front apron guarantee the increased supply of cooling air to the engine. For this reason, they sport two aerodynamically shaped horizontal fins in place of meshes and as a result route the airflow to the radiators without loss.
Additional Air Curtains on the outside of the front apron calm the airflow, improving the Cd value of the open-top two-seater. Thanks to their narrow, vertical openings, the Air Curtains also guide the air specifically towards the wheel arches, optimising the flow properties. To ensure ideal airflow through the double wheel arch radiators, the roadster additionally features unique wheel arch liners with special cooling-air slits.
Not at all aloof: active aerodynamics profile for more precise handling and better road adhesion
An active aerodynamics profile is concealed almost invisibly in the underbody in front of the engine. Weighing around two kilograms, this light carbon-fibre element is speed-sensitive and automatically extends around 40 millimetres downwards depending on the drive programme. This process involves considerable change in the airflow and results in what is known as the Venturi effect, which additionally “sucks” the car onto the road and reduces the front-axle lift by around 40 kilograms at 155 mph. The aerodynamics profile automatically retracts again depending on the drive programme and speed.
The driver can feel the advantages in the steering: the roadster can be steered even more precisely when cornering at high speed and exhibits even better directional stability. Especially during fast cornering and under high lateral acceleration, the vehicle delivers far more agile response with clear steering-wheel feedback while remaining easily controllable at all times. In addition, the drag coefficient is improved. The downforce on the rear axle remains at an unchanged high level.
When the electrically operated profile is extended, the radiator air outlet opens at the front end and precisely guides the air flow towards the double rear diffuser, which leads to an optimal flow of air. This improves the handling stability of the rear axle while reducing the temperature level of the hotspots at the rear. At the same time, the aerodynamics measures ensure optimised stopping power by routing more cold air specifically to the wheel disks.
combined fuel consumption 12.5-11.4 l/100 km, combined CO2 emissions 284-261 g/km*
Affalterbach. At its début four years ago, the AMG GT (combined fuel consumption 12.5-11.4 l/100 km, combined CO2 emissions 284-261 g/km) confidently sought out competition on the world-wide sports car scene - and conquered a large part of the market. The top athlete from Affalterbach now comes to the starting line honed further, and with the new limited edition AMG GT R PRO. In addition to exterior updates, the two-door AMG GT Coupés and Roadsters will be fitted with the AMG DYNAMICS integrated driving dynamics control system for added agility, the new AMG Performance steering wheel, the centre console with innovative display buttons from the AMG GT 4-Door Coupé (combined fuel consumption: 11.3-9.4 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 257-215 g/km) and a fully digital instrument display with exclusive AMG “Superport” display style on the instrument cluster. The AMG GT R PRO was modified in numerous details to deliver even more racetrack performance: The optimised specific power, the new suspension, the aerodynamic fine-tuning resulting in even more downforce overall, lightweight-design bucket seats and lightweight-design wheels contribute to the enhanced driving dynamics and faster lap times on the racetrack.
"The AMG GT embodies the core of our brand, "Driving Performance", in a unique way. At its début four years ago, it not only turned the heads of customers and sports car enthusiasts, but also created new dimensions in the competitive environment. In order to continue this success story, we have now equipped it with numerous innovations from the AMG GT 4-Door Coupé and added a new limited-edition top-of-the-range model: No other production model of Mercedes-AMG presently is as close to motor racing as the new AMG GT R PRO. A lot of experience from our current GT3 and GT4 motorsport activities entered into its development.
The agile responses to all driver commands and the overall performance now deliver even more of that incomparable feeling that our racing drivers experience on the track", says Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Management Board of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.
Fully digital instrument display as standard.
As in the AMG GT 4-Door Coupé, the new telematics architecture in the two-door AMG GT models makes the innovative, standard fully digital instrument display with 12.3-inch instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch multimedia display on the centre console possible. The instrument cluster offers an entirely new screen design with the three AMG-specific display styles “Classic”, “Sporty” or “ Supersport”. In the “Supersport" mode, there is also extensive additional information specific to AMG, such as a prompt borrowed from motorsport to shift up in manual transmission mode. The newly designed visualisations in the multimedia display enable further vehicle functions to be experienced even better, e.g. with an animated presentation of the driving assistance, vehicle and communication systems.
Via the left-hand touch control button on the steering wheel, preferred information can also be displayed on the left or right-hand side of the instrument panel – for example the classic speedometer and rev counter, navigation information or assistance systems through to detailed engine data. Sporty drivers especially can fade in a g-force display or the current output and torque values.
Innovative display buttons in the centre console
The eye-catching feature in the interior is the centre console with its stylised V8 design, not only putting the spotlight on the brand's performance claim but also perfectly fulfilling functional requirements. The 2-door AMG GT is now also getting the innovative, coloured display buttons. They integrate the display and steering of transmission logistics, chassis, ESP®, exhaust system, rear spoilers and start stop function. Using TFT technology the display buttons use intuitively comprehensible symbols to show the function and are easy to operate with just a small tap of the finger. The display buttons are supplemented by the two rocker switches for the drive programmes and volume control.
It’s all down to the grip: the new generation of AMG steering wheels
During model maintenance the 2-door AMG GT is getting the new AMG performance steering wheel which celebrated its début in the AMG GT 4-door coupé and is also available in the C 63. It is characterised by its sporty design, a flattened bottom section with a heavily contoured rim and intuitive operation. The steering wheel cover in black nappa leather is perforated at the sides to ensure optimum grip.
On the AMG GT S and AMG GT C the steering wheel comes as standard with a rim in black nappa leather/DINAMICA microfibre. In the AMG GT R the rim is completely covered with DINAMICA microfibre. The AMG steering wheel also comes in black nappa leather with trim in black piano gloss, as well as DINAMICA microfibre with elements in high-gloss carbon fibre. In any case the galvanised gearshift paddles on the steering wheel allow an even sportier driving style with manual gear shift.
The integrated Touch Control buttons can be used to control the functions of the digital dash and the multimedia display by means of horizontal and vertical swiping of the finger. The active distance assistant DISTRONIC and the TEMPOMAT cruise control can be adjusted on the control panels on the left. The control panels on the right are used to activate the voice control and telephone, to regulate the volume as well as other functions of the multimedia system.
All 2-door AMG GT models have the standard new AMG steering wheel buttons. These consist of a round controller with an integrated display beneath the right-hand steering-wheel spoke, plus two vertically positioned colour display buttons with switches beneath the left-hand steering-wheel spoke.
The AMG drive programmes can be triggered via the controller. The selected setting is shown on the colour LCD display directly integrated in the controller.
The two freely configurable display buttons and the additional switches on the left-hand side enable further AMG functions to be controlled directly on the steering wheel. This means that the driver can concentrate fully on dynamic driving without having to take their hands off the wheel. Each required function can be depicted on the display icon and its switch is tapped by the driver to set the respective function.
So the two individually preferred AMG functions can be defined exactly and the settings changed with just one tap of the finger.
Data logger for use on the race track: AMG TRACK PACE
The AMG TRACK PACE virtual race engineer, which records data when driving on closed-off race tracks, provides a significantly extended and even more precise scope of functions. AMG TRACK PACE is a standard part of the COMAND online infotainment system.
Once the function has been activated, while driving on a race track, more than 80 vehicle-specific sets of data (e.g. speed, acceleration) are recorded ten times per second.
The data is displayed on the multimedia display and the digital dash. Well-known race tracks like, for example, the Nürburgring or Spa Francorchamps, are already stored. Furthermore, it is also possible to record your own circuits.
Exterior: AMG GT family connection further enhanced
The new light controls of the LED high performance headlights now show parallels to the AMG GT 4-door coupé and therefore further enhance the AMG GT family connection. A tri-functional, arched light guide takes on the functions of daytime running light, navigation light and turn signals.
The multi-chamber reflector system with three single reflectors each for dipped beam and main beam not only ensures optimal illumination of the roadway, but also gives the AMG GT a sporty, dynamic look which gains even more optical depth as the result of the black background. The light of the LED tail lights also appears even deeper set and sportier through the dark background.
From the back the new look of the rear apron is striking, its sporty black diffuser insert was redesigned for the AMG GT, AMG GT S and AMG GT C. At the same time the tail pipe cover was visually redesigned and matched to the shape of the AMG GT 4-door coupé. The AMG GT now has two round twin tail pipe covers, the AMG GT S and AMG GT C has trapeze shaped twin tail pipe covers. The rear design of the AMG GT R keeps its distinctive shape with the large, centrally positioned tail pipe cover with centre bar. It is flanked by two more black tail pipes on the left and right of the diffuser.
The AMG GT and AMG GT S are getting a new black grained sill cover on the bottom section. This makes for an additional dynamic optical look. Used in combination with the optional exterior package, additional decorative element attachments emphasise the features.
Also, if desired, the AMG GT and AMG GT S can come with a new light y-spoke alloy wheel in soft black with a finely polished surface. In addition, an option for the AMG GT, AMG GT S and AMG GT C is new 10-double-spoked forged wheels in titanium grey with finely polished surfaces or in soft black with finely polished rim flange.
A new option is the parking package with the PARKTRONIC park assistant, reverse and front camera, which increases everyday suitability when manoeuvring. And one more sign of a family connection is also the 2-door AMG GT, now available in brilliant blue magno, which will be introduced with the AMG GT 4-door coupé. Other extras are two-tone leather upholstery in exclusive nappa style in silver pearl/black.
Even more agile through AMG DYNAMICS
As a new feature in the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT “Slippery”, “Comfort”, “Sport”, “Sport Plus”, “RACE” and “Individual” drive programmes, the 2-door AMG GT now also comes with AMG DYNAMICS. This integrated driving dynamics regulation expands the functions of ESP® (electronic stability programme) to exact dosing of power distribution at the rear axis and the characteristics of steering.
In this way the AMG GT becomes even more agile at its highest stability. In the first place AMG DYNAMICS optimises the transverse dynamics by a higher lateral acceleration, better traction and load change reactions.
Particularly remarkable: AMG DYNAMICS calculates how the vehicle will react. To do this, the system uses the available sensors that detect the speed, the steering angle or the yaw rate, for instance. Based on the pilot-control principle it is possible to anticipate the vehicle behaviour on the basis of the driver's actions and the data from the sensors. The control system reacts in this way even before the driver – and with no noticeable or intervention of the system. The driver gets a very authentic driving feel with high cornering dynamics and optimum traction as well as high stability and predictable handling. Even experienced drivers receive optimum assistance without feeling patronised by the system.
The different AMG DYNAMICS modes are named "Basic", "Advanced", "Pro" and "Master". The drive program selection indicated on the multimedia display now shows the new AMG DYNAMICS symbol with the relevant additional term instead of the previous ESP® symbol.
"Basic" is assigned to the "Slippery" and "Comfort" drive programs. Here the AMG GT demonstrates exceptionally stable handling characteristics with high yaw damping.
"Advanced" is activated in the "Sport" programme. The AMG GT is then neutrally balanced. The lower yaw damping, lower steering angle requirement and enhanced agility support dynamic manoeuvres such as driving on winding country roads.
“Pro” (abbreviation for “professional”) is part of the “Sport+” programme. In “Pro” the driver receives even more assistance for dynamic driving manoeuvres while agility and precision are further enhanced when taking corners.
“Master” (only available for GT C, GT S and GT R) is connected to the RACE drive programme. "Master" mode is aimed at drivers who want to experience dynamism and the driving enjoyment on closed-off circuits. "Master" offers an extremely neutral vehicle balance, low steer angle requirement and more agile steering. In this way, "Master" ensures maximum agility and fully exploits the dynamic potential.
