TOYOTA GAZOO Racing (TGR) held the world premiere of the all-new GR Corolla in Long Beach, California, USA, on March 31 (local time), on the eve of the opening round of the Formula Drift*1season. The GR Corolla is scheduled for launch in Japan in the second half of 2022.
Through such achievements as the TE25 Corolla earning Toyota Motor Corporation's (Toyota's) first WRC victory*2in 1973, followed by the Corolla Levin's win in the 1,000 Lakes Rally*3in 1975, the Corolla laid the foundation for TGR's concept of "making ever-better motorsports-bred cars" and is a model loved by many for its driving performance. The GR Corolla sprang to life based on the strong desire of Toyota President Akio Toyoda, a.k.a. Morizo, to "bring back a Corolla that captivates our customers".
In response to that desire, the development of the GR Corolla carried forth the torch of making ever-better motorsports-bred cars, which focuses on honing cars to win races and making them commercially available. In concrete terms, the vehicle was comprehensively reforged in the extreme environment of racing by participating in the Super Taikyu Series using a hydrogen engine-equipped Corolla*4to also refine a hydrogen engine, which comprises new technologies, with Toyota Master Driver Morizo, himself, taking stints behind the wheel. Furthermore, to ensure that the vehicle could be driven with confidence and enjoyment in a variety of situations, prototypes were put through their paces not only on racing circuits but also on highly demanding dirt roads and snow-covered roads. Driving was done beyond the breaking point for comprehensive honing by drivers who each have unique perspectives, including Morizo, racing driver Hiroaki Ishiura, All Japan Rally Championship winner Norihiko Katsuta, and in-house evaluators.
The GR Corolla boasts a strengthened version of the 1.6-liter in-line three-cylinder intercooler turbo engine found in the GR Yaris, resulting in a maximum output of 224 kW (304 PS). Optimizing the GR-FOUR 4WD system, which is also featured on the GR Yaris, to match the specifications of the GR Corolla was among various initiatives undertaken to create a car that can be safely and securely controlled even when pushing it to its limits.
While adopting the basic body framework of the Toyota Corolla Sport to enable it to inherit the high-speed stability of a long wheelbase, the GR Corolla employs a 60 mm wider track up front and an 85 mm wider track in the rear to command a high level of cornering performance. The result: sporty driving at will with peace of mind. And to complete the package, the GR Corolla retains a five-door, five-passenger layout for both exceptional usability in daily life and driving pleasure.
Since its birth in 1966, the Corolla has evolved throughout its generations into a variety of sedans, wagons, hatchbacks, and SUVs to meet the changing lifestyles of Toyota customers over time. With the GR Corolla joining the lineup as a sports car packed tight with driving performance and functionality ready to be embraced by many customers, the Corolla series will keep on continuing to evolve.
Main features of the GR Corolla
A motorsports-bred design refined into functional beauty
Exterior
While the basic body framework of the Corolla Sport has been adopted, 20 mm wider front fenders and 30 mm wider rear fenders produce a broader stance that foreshadows a spirited driving experience.
The triple exhausts of a muffler created to further increase the output of the 1.6-liter in-line three-cylinder intercooler turbo engine emphasize the unique, powerful, and sporty rear.
Honing the vehicle's cooling and aerodynamic performance on all kinds of roads, including racing circuits, dirt roads, and snow-covered roads, resulted in the inclusion of a front-bumper air intake and front-fender and hood-bulge air outlets.
Interior
A short-stroke shift lever positioned for natural operation by simply lowering the arm from the steering wheel enables quick gear changes.
A hand-operated parking brake has been used to allow better vehicle control even when pushing the car to its limits, such as when drifting.
The Full TFT Meter, which was developed exclusively for GR models, has been newly adopted. Inspired by race cars and reflecting insight from professional drivers, the new display improves visibility during sporty driving.
An evolved version of the GR Yaris 1.6-liter in-line three-cylinder intercooler turbo engine
Engine exhaust efficiency was improved to achieve even higher output from the same compact, lightweight, high-power unit that propels the GR Yaris. A valve-equipped triple-exhaust muffler reduces both exhaust pressure and noise. In sum, the engine provides overwhelming acceleration and a more-pleasant extension of RPMs.
A wide track and long wheelbase for excellent driving stability and control
The basic body framework of the Toyota Corolla Sport has been adopted, and, while retaining the excellent driving stability provided by a long wheelbase, high-speed cornering performance has been improved by widening the track by 60 mm up front and by 85 mm in the rear. Stability and control during sporty driving have been greatly enhanced, allowing confidence and enjoyment while driving as one pleases, even when pushing the car to its limits.
A selectable-mode GR-FOUR 4WD system and a high-rigidity body
The featured GR-FOUR 4WD system uses an electronic multi-plate clutch to provide variable front and rear driving force, like in the GR Yaris. This time, however, the system's "4WD" mode, which controls driving force distribution, and its "Drive" mode, which controls accelerator response, steering, and others, have been separated to enable selection according to driver preference and the driving environment. Furthermore, the use of pillow-ball bushings and the optimization of the springs, shock absorbers, and wheel alignment combine to fully transmit the GR-FOUR's optimal distribution of driving force to the road surface. This has resulted in overwhelming cornering performance.
Body rigidity has been strengthened to achieve driving performance that agilely responds to driver operation. In addition to the high-rigidity basic framework made possible through production at the GR Factory at Toyota's Motomachi Plant, braces have been added between the rear wheel wells, to the under-floor tunnel, and under the floor in front of the fuel tank to improve handling stability. Also, like in the case of the GR Yaris, the roof panel is made of CFRP*5molded by the SMC*6process, which offers a high degree of freedom of shape and contributes not only to increased rigidity but also to weight reduction.
Opposed caliper disk brakes provide stable braking force and controllability, enabling confident and enjoyable driving, even on racing circuits.
Advanced safety and security even for a sports car
The latest active safety package, Toyota Safety Sense, comes standard, allowing the combination of safety and security in daily driving and the driving pleasure of a sports car.

Wolfsburg – In April, Volkswagen presented the latest evolutionary stage of the sixth generation of Polo. Now comes its sportiest version: the new Polo GTI. The bearer of the legendary acronym spearheads the Polo segment in terms of performance, technology and sportiness. The powerful TSI engine and sports chassis, tailored specifically to the Polo GTI, transform the best-selling compact car into a dynamic, four-door sports car, which also allows semi-automated driving as an option for the first time in a Polo GTI. A host of the latest generation of assistance systems guarantee even greater comfort and safety for all passengers.
In the automobile world, there are three letters that have had a magic sound to them for approaching five decades now: GTI. Since the original GTI in 1976, Volkswagen has ensured that this code is synonymous with outstanding driving pleasure in the compact segment. The Polo has borne the acronym GTI since 1998 – the third model to do so, after the Golf and the Scirocco. The latest generation seamlessly continues the illustrious GTI tradition and sets new benchmarks for compact cars. The technical basis for this is provided by Volkswagen’s Modular Transverse Toolkit (MQB). Across all the model lines, MQB stands for technological progress, high body rigidity, an exemplary low weight, and very good crash properties.
IQ.DRIVE Travel Assist, used for the first time in a Polo GTI, enables semi-automated driving. The system can take over the steering, braking and accelerating of the new Polo GTI from 0 km/h to the control limit of Travel Assist (210 km/h). For longitudinal guidance, IQ.DRIVE Travel Assist calls upon familiar systems like Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC). Latitudinal guidance is supported by Lane Assist, which comes as standard. The driver can activate the system via the Travel Assist button in the redesigned, multifunctional, leather sports steering wheel. The driver’s hands must remain on the steering wheel whilst using this system, meaning the driver is always responsible for the car.
Many new infotainment systems (the latest generation of MIB3.1), which are connected to various services online, ensure state-of-the-art connectivity in the new Polo GTI. An Online Connectivity Unit (OCU) with integrated eSIM makes it possible to use online services from We Connect (prepared for a limited time) and We Connect Plus (prepared for free use in Europe for one or three years). Features like natural voice control, access to streaming services and a cloud-based personalisation using “Volkswagen ID” enhance the latest MIB3.1 system, depending on the equipment line. The integration of such apps as App-Connect Wireless for Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ is now wireless. As in the Polo, instruments and the infotainment system are arranged on a visual axis, ensuring they can be viewed and operated easily in any driving situation. The Digital Cockpit Pro impresses with a higher pixel density, an improved contrast ratio and intense colours, as well as it sheer size – the screen measures 10.25 inches or 26 centimetres diagonally.
Sportiness coupled with efficiency and moderate consumption The heart of a GTI is always its engine. Like all its predecessors, the new Polo GTI is also front-wheel drive. The turbo-charged, direct petrol injector changes gear via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (DSG), which comes as standard. Among the highlights of the turbo engine in the new Polo GTI, which is installed transversely at the front of the car, are such features as a dual injection system with combined direct and intake-manifold fuel injection, an engine control unit with four core processors, and an electronic valve-lift system on the inlet side. Despite the high output, the engine is impressively efficient with moderate fuel consumption levels. This is aided by the low weight of the new Polo GTI when empty.
As you would expect from a genuine Volkswagen GTI, the new Polo GTI also comes with a sports chassis, tailored specially to the car, as standard. It lowers the chassis by 15 millimetres and guarantees the typical GTI synthesis of driving dynamics, safe neutrality and a high degree of driving comfort.
The new Polo GTI now comes as standard with the new IQ.Light – LED matrix headlights and an illuminated radiator grille bar as a distinctive enhancement to the daytime running light. This sees the sporty new Polo form a stylistic bridge to Volkswagen’s fully-electric ID. models and the new generation of successful models like the Golf, Arteon and Tiguan, which also come with this striking LED light strip, which is typical of new Volkswagens, as an option or depending on the equipment line.
The most striking visual change to the rear of the new Polo GTI is the newly-designed LED rear lights with animated brake light and integrated dynamic indicators, which indicate a change in direction with flowing light movements. The new, GTI-specific bumper gives the compact sports car an even more commanding and broader visual presence on the roads. The Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFS), which is integrated in the side of the bumper and controlled via the main headlights, has been redesigned and now gives an even more concise lighting effect. In combination with the IQ.Light –
LED matrix headlights, it provides a very homogenous illumination of the road and surroundings. The striking red GTI logo on the radiator grille, the honeycomb-shaped ventilation grilles, and the continuous red trim strip above the LED daytime running light strip remain the characteristic GTI insignia at the sharper front of the car. To the right and left, it flows into the IQ.Light – LED matrix headlights with red winglets.
The new Polo GTI is available in five colours: Deep Black Pearl Effect, Smoke Grey Metallic, Kings Red Metallic, Pure White Uni, and Reef Blue Metallic. The latter three chassis colours can be combined with a contrasting black roof as an option (Roof Pack). The car comes with 17-inch alloy wheels as standard. The Polo GTI can also be ordered with optional 18-inch alloys.
On the interior, black, red, grey and chrome are the dominant colours.
The roof pillars and roof liner are always retained in the Titanium Black trim colour, which is typical of the GTI. Red contrast stitching is also always a typical characteristic of a GTI. It adorns the multifunctional, leather sports steering wheel, which comes as standard, the gear lever trim and the seat surfaces. The optional beats sound system, with 300 watts and six speakers, make for a captivating accoustic experience. The amplifier is located under the floor in the variable cargo area to save space. The luggage capacity of the new Polo GTI is 351 litres.
R(The new Golf R)을 전세계 최초 공개했다.

INTRODUCTION
Loïc FEUVRAY, Trophy-R Renault Sport Cars program manager:“New Mégane R.S. Trophy-R will interest expert customers looking for pure performance with no compromises - ready to treat themselves to something exceptional. Only 500 cars will be made, 30 of which will be fitted with the optional Carbon-Ceramic pack offering features that are ground-breaking in this segment. The high level of performance is also in the management of this project. From the beginning the product specifications are centred on clear objectives, a minimal “racing” team, agile management where decisions are taken immediately to eliminate any barriers preventing technical deployment. In the end the objectives are reached, the schedule is respected, and the result is an exceptional and profitable product.”
Over the last 15 years, the Mégane-based Renault Sport versions have set the hot hatch standard for ultimate performance and driving thrills. In that time the most radical versions of the MÉGANE R.S. have successively beaten the front-wheel drive production car lap record for the hugely challenging Nürburgring, a circuit that’s recognised around the world as the ultimate proving ground for a car’s performance.
The New MÉGANE R.S. TROPHY-R is no exception, setting a new record of 7 minutes 40.1 seconds around the tortuous track famously known as the ‘Green Hell’. Yet unlike competitors that simply focus on delivering ever higher power outputs, the engineers at Renault Sport have concentrated on three distinct performance pillars: weight reduction, the maximisation of aerodynamic efficiency and more radical suspension systems. This approach is a Renault Sport trademark, an approach that priorities speed through the corners rather than outright performance in a straight line.
Featuring an impressive weight reduction of 130kg, a totally redesigned suspension set-up and modified aerodynamics the New MÉGANE R.S. TROPHY-R is the most extreme Renault Sport model yet. It also boasts some innovations that are normally the preserve of high end supercars, such as the optional carbon ceramic brakes and carbon fibre wheels. And in its pursuit of undiluted driving pleasure it removes items such as the rear seats, while the composite Sabelt seats can be ordered with six-point racing harnesses - this is a car that puts the driver front and centre.
Identified by its unique mother-of-pearl paint finish and red highlights (front blade, side stripes, double lateral diamonds graphics and the spokes of the Fuji-Light wheels), its TROPHY-R monograms, its carbon components in the bonnet and rear diffuse and its "shark fin" aerial. Inside, the racing atmosphere is underlined by the Alcantara® racing seats, a material that also adorns the racing steering wheel and handbrake lever. A numbered plaque on the door sill emphasizes the exclusiveness of this limited production model.
Of course, New MÉGANE R.S. TROPHY-R is also a car developed using Renault Sport’s extensive motorsport expertise. As a result, the New MÉGANE R.S. TROPHY-R is a hot hatch ready for the racetrack. With greater traction, speed through corners and braking endurance, it is capable of bringing intense pleasure to expert drivers that want to make the most of its incredible potential. Such is the level of the MEGANE R.S. TROPHY-R that it can easily compete with models that feature four-wheel drive and well in excess of 300 bhp.
This exceptional car will be made available as a limited series of just 500 numbered vehicles globally.
THE THREE PERFORMANCE PILLARS: WEIGHT-SAVING, SUSPENSION AND AERODYNAMICS
WEIGHT-SAVING
Thierry RÉVEILLÉ, technical synthesis engineer Mégane R.S. Trophy-R Renault Sport Cars:“Weight reduction plays a major role in increasing the performance of New MÉGANE R.S. TROPHY-R. In addition to offering a better mass/power ratio, the virtuous circle of weight reduction delivers better agility and performance. Light is right! “
The New MÉGANE R.S. TROPHY-R benefits from a truly remarkable weight reduction of 130kg, when configured with its lightest equipment and compared to the standard Trophy version without options. As a result it tips the scales at just 1,306 kg, representing a power to weight ratio of 230 PS/per ton compared to 209 PS/per ton for the Trophy, despite both sharing the same impressive 300 PS turbocharged 1.8-litre engine. As a result, the 0-62mph sprint now takes just 5.4 seconds - a full three-tenths faster than the Trophy.
This incredible reduction in mass is achieved in a number of ways, each one designed with the expressed intention of squeezing more performance from an already potent package. For instance, the exterior and mechanicals of the New MÉGANE R.S. TROPHY-R benefit from the following enhancements:
Carbon composite bonnet: at 8kg this panel is half the weight of the standard car’s steel item. Carbon fibre is used for the distinctive NACA air intake and the bonnet lining, while the rest of the louvered panel is fibreglass. As a further touch, New MÉGANE R.S. TROPHY-R uses the lighter opaque and hollow Renault grille badge usually reserved for models equipped with adaptive cruise control.
Entirely carbon rear diffuser: not only lighter than the standard unit it helps generate extra aerodynamic downforce.
Wheels: the design of the Fuji Light 19’’ alloy wheel (optional on the Trophy) creates a weight saving of 2kg per corner, while the optional Carbon Revolution carbon wheel slices a further 2kg per wheel and is a world first in this sector.
Akrapovičtitanium exhaust: not only does this contribute to a weight saving of over 6kg, it also delivers a more authentic Developed to meet road and track noise regulations it has also been designed to integrate perfectly with the aerodynamics of the rear diffuser, plus it continues a Akrapovič’s working relationship with Renault Sport that goes back to the Megane R.S. 275 Trophy.
Bespoke lighter rear axle: this unit brings a significant 32kg saving over the Trophy, which is largely down to the decision not to use 4CONTROL steering for New MÉGANE R.S. TROPHY-R. With the improved front axle and lighter weight, the required improvements in agility could be gained with a non-directional rear axle, while the need for the standard car’s high speed stability was not something that was demanded by expert drivers.
Optional air intake to replace the R.S. Vision driving lamps: available as an option, this extra unit fits into the nearside lower trim panel normally occupied by the R.S. Vision driving lamps. Using an accessory pipe it feeds directly into the engine air intake. In combination with an identical looking but blanked off insert on the offside this option results in a 2kg saving in weight and slightly reduced overhanging mass, subtly reducing the polar moment of inertia for improved agility.
High performance DESS lead battery: standard fit is a Dual Energy Storage System (DESS) battery that delivers increased performance for its size, while an optional lithium DESS battery offers a 4.5kg weight saving and is available from the online store as an accessory (R.S.com).
The inside of the New MÉGANE R.S. TROPHY-R hasn’t escaped the engineers’ forensic pursuit of weight-saving. Almost the entire interior has been reworked in an effort to minimise mass and increase performance, with the following changes:
Sabelt composite monocoque racing seats: Finished in grippy and hard-wearing Alcantara® these figure-hugging one-piece seats offer a weight saving of approximately 7kg per seat. Both seats can be set at three different heights using the lightweight subframe, while a Sabelt six-point harness is available as an accessory. Specific Renault Sport trim colours mean they integrate seamlessly with the rest of the cabin.
Removal of rear seats: By ditching the rear bench an impressive 3 kg has been stripped from the kerbweight. On cars with the optional carbon fibre wheels there are four separate storage bags, straps, netting and a cradle for the wheels. These can be accessed using the rear doors, which remain operational, and the tailgate. Furthermore, there is a thinner boot floor that saves 1.3kg and is marked with an R logo.
Thinner glazing, sealed rear door windows and deletion of rear wiper: the front and rear side windows get thinner and lighter glazing, saving 1kg, while the rear doors get fixed glass panes, which allows the removal of the electric window mechanisms and motors. In a similar vein, the rear wiper, its motor and wiring loom have been deleted, resulting in a 3kg saving.
7.0-inch infotainment screen: the obsessive pursuit of weight reduction is highlighted by the use of the smaller 7.0-inch infotainment system, which saves 250g compared to the standard Trophy’s 8.7-inch screen. However, the reversing camera is carried over, helping to avoid any risk of damaging the carbon diffuser when manoeuvring!
SUSPENSION
Laurent HURGON, Renault Sport test driver:“This new version is a demanding car for expert drivers who love to fine tune, and are seeking performance above all else. Every driver can make adjustments to their vehicle, learning to master the car, adjusting the shock absorbers and attitude to fine-tune handling to meet their requirements for driving into, through and out of bends. “
With the same engine power as the standard Trophy, the New MÉGANE R.S. TROPHY-R has been developed to deliver its increased performance through the corners. Not only has the axle geometry been revised to increase speed through the bends and traction on the exit, there are also many options for fine-tuning adjustments by the driver, essentially making the new New MÉGANE R.S. TROPHY-R a true racing car for the road. In their pursuit of maximum suspension performance on road and track Renault Sport’s engineers have undertaken the following changes:
Revised front suspension: the New MÉGANE R.S. TROPHY-R benefits from a heavily revised suspension with its own geometry. Just like a racing car, the front axle keeps its independent pivot and has the negative camber increased by 1° compared to that of the Mégane R.S. Trophy, taking the figure to -2.05° in total. As a result the tyre contact patch is maintained during high cornering loads, allowing higher speeds through bends and better traction on the exits.
Torsen® limited slip differential: carried over from the Trophy is the limited slip differential that improves traction both in a straight line and out of corners, allowing drivers to use more of the engine’s power for a faster exit speed.
Lightened H rear axle: the New MÉGANE R.S. TROPHY-R features a bespoke rear axle, which saves 32kg. Crucially, the new set-up does not use the 4CONTROL four-wheel steering, the resulting weight-saving being much more appreciated by expert drivers than the fractional loss in high-speed stability.
Öhlins dampers: engineered in collaboration with Swedish suspension specialists Ohlins, these dual flow dampers make a major contribution to the dynamic efficiency of the New MÉGANE R.S. TROPHY-R. At both the front and rear these units can be adjusted for body height (lowering the ride by up to 16mm) and compression/rebound, while further tuning is offered by the adjustable bump stops.
Rear strut brace: by removing the rear seats it has been possible to add a strut brace that improves the torsional rigidity of the bodyshell.
Bridgestone Potenza S007 tyres: Developed specifically for Renault Sport, the Potenza S007 is standard on the New MÉGANE R.S. TROPHY-R (and optional on the Trophy). Delivering remarkable response in terms of steering and optimum grip for extreme driving, the tyres are the first to get a specific R.S. marking on the wall. This is a high performance tyre that can be used every day yet is capable of enabling a record-breaking run on the Nordschleife.
Standard Brembo brakes: braking efficiency is naturally improved by the weight reduction measures on the New MÉGANE R.S. TROPHY-R, yet tthe dual material 355 mm front brake discs from Mégane R.S. Trophy are combined with new Brembo four piston callipers that feature larger 42mm pistons (the Trophy’s have a 40mm diameter).
Carbon ceramic brake upgrade: the optional carbon ceramic discs feature an even larger 390mm diameter to virtually take up all the available space behind the 19’’ wheel. These are clamped by a Gold finished Brembo four piston (44mm top and 42mm bottom) callipers embossed with the Renault Sport logo. Due to the increased braking performance revised ABS and ESP calibrations were necessary, ensuring consistent pedal pressure and bite during extreme driving. This gives New MÉGANE R.S. TROPHY-R the ultimate braking performance and unbeatable endurance, even during extended track work. In addition, the disc’s carbon-ceramic material considerably lengthens operational
Multi-Sense: as on the Trophy, the Multi-Sense set-up allows drivers to tailor the steering, throttle and ambient lighting to suit the situation and mood.
AERODYNAMICS
François-Xavier DELAGE, Mégane R.S. Trophy-R Renault Sport Cars head engineer:“Considerable work was conducted on aerodynamics, for the same purposes as weight reduction and suspension: to increase grip by improving the overall aerodynamics and front/rear aerodynamic balance, in particular due to the resulting weight reduction in the rear part of the car. While the specific underbodies smooth the airflow upstream, the diffuser with its enlarged section downstream generates double the downforce than on Mégane R.S. Trophy with very limited deterioration of drag (+ 1.5%). These specific technical elements to enhance performance enabled the designers to produce an expressive resolutely “racing” design.“
As with the rest of the car, the aerodynamic performance of the New MÉGANE R.S. TROPHY-R was put under the microscope. Any design choices made were done so with the sole aim of optimising performance. As a result, engineers were able to deliver greater front and rear downforce while limiting aerodynamic drag. All changes made were verified both using CFD (computational fluid dynamics) and results gained in the wind tunnel.
At the front the New MÉGANE R.S. TROPHY-R benefits from a new bonnet with NACA intake, which combines with a similar vent under the engine to improve the air flow by seven percent and optimise cooling of the engine compartment during extreme hard driving. When at a standstill the new lateral louvres set into the bonnet work in combination with the NACA duct to provide a natural escape for engine heat build-up.
The bottom blade under the front bumper has been also been redesigned to provide better aerodynamic balance between the front and rear, while the new fairings under the front bumper and under the floor smooth air flow to optimise supply to the rear diffuser.
This entirely carbon fibre rear diffuser is equipped with thinner, F1-type curved blades that feature an even larger effective surface area in the central section in particular. Furthermore, the twin exit Akrapovič titanium exhaust features tailpipes that are cut to follow the profile of the diffuser, helping to minimise any disruption in the central airstream. By maximising the airflow in this way engineers have delivered increased downforce compared to the Mégane R.S. Trophy. achieve this same objective,
A further enhancement is the optional dynamic air intake that replaces the R.S. Vision driving lamps, normally set low in the front bumper, which helps lower air intake temperatures. Available as an accessory is a ducting pipe that extends this intake straight into the engine air filter unit.
On top of all this, new brake scoops double the air flow to the front discs, further improving braking endurance in severe conditions.
ENGINE, GEARBOX AND LIMITED PRODUCTION
Damienne DENIS, head of the Renault Sport Cars marketing department: “With New MÉGANE R.S. TROPHY-R, we are targeting our most radical customers, for whom performance is the number one purchase criterion, well ahead of all the others. They know our history and our capacity to push back the limits, and they expect us once more to produce an extreme car with no concessions to performance. We owe it to ourselves to bring them the best of our know-how, and to offer them the options and accessories they need to push their Trophy-R experience as far as possible.”
ENGINE AND GEARBOX
Given the high specific power rating already achieved by the the Mégane R.S. Trophy’s MR18 engine (with 300 PS it delivers an extremely impressive 167 PS per litre), Renault Sport concluded that it had more than enough performance for the lighter and even more focused New MÉGANE R.S. TROPHY-R.
To recap, however, the 1.8-litre direct injection turbo four-cylinder unit develops 300 PS at 6,000 rpm and delivers a muscular of 400 Nm of torque. Its turbocharger makes use of a technology originating directly from Formula 1, the ceramic ball bearing coating both reducing response time and easily coping with the heat and stresses of spinning at up to 200,000rpm.
Underlining the unit’s robustness is the fact that it was chosen by Renault Sport Racing as the basis for the engine used in the latest generation of Formula Renault single seat racer used in the demanding Formula Renault Eurocup championship.
Renault Sport engineers chose the six-speed manual gearbox for the New Mégane R.S. TROPHY-Ras it is lighter than the dual clutch EDC transmission, plus it is more in keeping with the car’s focus on expert drivers.
In combination with the significant weight-savings the new engine delivers impressive performance:
Max speed: 163mph
Acceleration 0-62 mph: 5.4 seconds
Acceleration 31-75mph in 3rd gear: 2.9 seconds
Standing kilometre: 24.5 seconds
Furthermore, the engine is equipped with a petrol particle filter and meets the Euro 6d temp standards.
LIMITED PRODUCTION RUN OF 500 UNITS
Like its predecessors the Mégane R.S. R26.R and Mégane R.S. 275 Trophy-R, the New MÉGANE R.S. TROPHY-R is set to be a rare and exclusive car. It appeals to the most demanding type of Renault Sport customers, who seeks the most sophisticated and engaging handling, and is motivated above all by performance.
As a result, the New MÉGANE R.S. TROPHY-R will be launched as a limited series of 500 numbered vehicles globally, with France, Germany, United Kingdom, Switzerland and Japan being the main markets.
Of the 500 examples globally, 30 will be ultra exclusive versions that feature the following options:
Four additional carbon wheels: delivered in their own individual covers and secured by a dedicated Sabelt net to a special subframe behind the front seats, these lightweight wheels are in addition to the standard Fuji Light rims.
Carbon-Ceramic pack: this combines front brakes with carbon-ceramic discs combined with the dynamic air intake replacing the R.S. Vision headlights.
The remaining 470 examples can be specified with a range of options aimed at further improving the already extreme performance of the New MÉGANE R.S. TROPHY-R:
Adjustable rear bumpstop and short suspension spring
DESS Lithium battery
Six-point Sabelt harness
Intake air duct for the dynamic air intake
Dynamic air intake.
BUILDING NEW MÉGANE R.S. TROPHY-R
Given the relatively small production numbers involved Renault Sport has worked closely with Palencia factory, which assembles the standard Mégane models. As a result, even the bespoke front axle complete with optional carbon ceramic brakes can be fitted on the full production line. In addition there is a team of 15 people working in the TECH workshop at the end of the line. Capable of setting up a tailored production system to fit parts that cannot be accommodated on the assembly line, these individuals attach items such as the bonnet, diffuser and carbon wheels. These are tasks where the human hand brings utmost care and precision to create the exceptional finished object: the New MÉGANE R.S. TROPHY-R, which is finished at a rate of 15 examples per day.
BEATING THE NURBURGRING LAP RECORD
François-Xavier DELAGE, head engineer for New MÉGANE R. S. TROPHY-R: “One of the characteristics of the organisation implemented on this TROPHY-R project is to set up an extremely small team of about ten people, as in F1, continuously seeking to improve performance and working to an extremely tight schedule. Team spirit, the human factor, the proximity between engineers and the driver have been fundamental structuring values: the record bears witness to this! “
On 5 April 2019 the New MÉGANE R.S. TROPHY-R set a new all-time record for front-wheel-drive production cars on the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring, completing the tortuous 12.8 mile lap in 7 minutes 40.1 seconds. This represents a remarkable performance on what is the most demanding circuit in the world for both for cars and drivers.
Yet this success is part of decade long story of Mégane R.S. and the ‘Ring, which reflects the passion and desire for a challenge that motivates all parts of Renault Sport team. This story began in 2008 when Renault secured the very first record in the production car category, and it has continued right up to 2019. In all, four “radical” Mégane R.S. cars have secured records in the production car category on the Nürburgring (Nordschleife):
2008: Mégane R.S. R26.R in 8 minutes 17 seconds.
2011: Mégane R.S. Trophy in 8 minutes 07.97 seconds.
2014: Mégane III R.S. Trophy-R in 7 minutes 54.36 seconds.
2019: The New MÉGANE R.S. TROPHY-R in 7 minutes 40.1 seconds
N.B.: The Nordschleife: a new official run. Up until 2019, most of the records were set on the 20.600 km run. Stopwatch started at the end of the T13 zone, and stopped at the start/finish line. Starting in 2019, the official run according to the Nürburgring is the complete lap of 20.832 km: stopwatch started and stopped on the start/finish line (beginning of T13). In this context, the Mégane R.S. Trophy-R time is recorded in the “compact cars” category (production vehicles without any modifications).
To achieve such a record today with a production car is a truly astounding achievement. To succeed it was necessary to introduce flexible and talented ‘commando style’ teamwork to keep within the short development time. This required methods similar to those used in the Renault Sport motorsport sector and experience gained by the Formula 1 team.
THE DRIVER: LAURENT HURGON
At the wheel for the successful record attempt was Laurent Hurgon, the official test driver for the New MÉGANE R.S. TROPHY-R. Having already broken the record on two previous occasions for Renault, he knows each metre of the circuit like the back of his hand. He is passionate about what he does, contributing in this ultimate version of the Mégane with the same dedicated attention to detail as he would for a racing car. After each test session there was a debriefing session, just as in motorsport, when adjustments would be made and new solutions found. Each change moving the project closer to ultimate performance.
Q&A WITH LAURENT HURGON
Can you tell us about the record-breaking lap?
Laurent Hurgon: ‘Conditions were not ideal, because the weather was cold and damp, but we found the right launch window for take-off. The Nordschleife is an extremely difficult track. It has lots of very fast sections, combined with several very different types of bends. Although I know the circuit very well, it still requires total concentration. But the car was ready, the whole team was behind me, and I was highly motivated to go for a record-breaking time.’
How do you approach a car like New MÉGANE R.S. TROPHY-R?
L.H.: ‘It’s a car that has to be seen like a competition car. In the same way as a test session, you have to drive a few laps to adjust the car to the racetrack, to the damp weather, your driving style and your preferences. It is vital to start by getting the tyres up to the right temperature, and to try out some load transfers to feel how the car reacts. Customers will be able to adjust the driveability and attitude of the car, the shock absorbers and the tyre pressures, in the same way as on a racing car.’
What does it feel like to drive the New MÉGANE R.S. TROPHY-R?
L.H.: ‘The front axle plays an important role, the more you push it the more effective it is, thanks to its negative cambering. It enables you to drive round bends at speeds that are completely off the map in this segment. That means you have to set the rear axle properly to control oversteer. The steering is precise as a scalpel, with its very direct reduction ratio. The brakes are ultra-powerful: carbon brings consistency and bite, so you can brake later and manage gradual braking more effectively. Although the aerodynamics push the car down onto the track, you still have be ultra-precise in your driving. It’s a demanding car that needs you to be humble if you want to learn to control it, but which will be exciting for customers, because there will always be room for improvement!’
A few final words?
L.H.: ‘I feel incredibly lucky to be able to contribute to developing such a car: demanding, limitless, delivering the best performance ever from a Renault production car. It’s both exciting and extremely rewarding. For the team, the common objective was unusually intense, especially as the company was keeping an eye on all our technical decisions. This is everything I love about Renault Sport, and this car is the crystallisation of this spirit and experience!’
The BMW Group has chosen IAA Cars 2017 in Frankfurt to present the modern racing essence of a MINI – in the form of the MINI John Cooper Works GP Concept. Inspired by the carmaker’s legendary triumphs in the Monte Carlo Rally exactly 50 years ago, this design study embodies undiluted dynamic flair and the ultimate in driving fun – on both the race track and the road. The concept car picks up the baton from the 2012 MINI John Cooper Works GP and 2006 MINI Cooper S with John Cooper Works GP Kit. Produced in strictly limited numbers (2,000 examples worldwide for each), these two models explored the outer limits of their performance capability at the time.
“The MINI John Cooper Works GP Concept is all about the unfettered feeling of driving and levels of performance found in motor sport competition,” says Peter Schwarzenbauer, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, responsible for MINI, Rolls-Royce and BMW Motorrad. “This is driving fun in its purest form.”
The design – compact proportions and sporting agility.
Significantly wider than the current MINI, the design study exudes dynamism and power. Large front and rear aprons, side skirts and a prominent roof spoiler create a confident appearance. The use of lightweight materials such as carbon fibre optimises the car’s power-to-weight ratio whilst evenly balanced weight distribution ensures MINI’s signature go-kart handling.
“If you know about MINI, you’ll be aware of the brand’s long and successful history in motor sport,” says Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design. “The MINI John Cooper Works GP Concept brings together the full suite of defining MINI design features and showcases them at their sportiest and most exciting. What we’re looking at here is maximum performance, maximum MINI.”
The front end.
Large air intakes and precisely moulded air deflectors dominate the front end, which cuts a low-to-the-road figure. Crisply cut add-on elements frame the smooth MINI silhouette and highlight the track focus of the MINI John Cooper Works GP Concept when viewed head-on. The space between the main body of the front end and the air deflectors further strengthens the car’s presence. The exterior is finished in Black Jack Anthracite paint – which shimmers between grey and black– and the accent colour is Curbside Red metallic (a matt red shade). Curbside Red metallic provides a fresh take on the classic John Cooper Works red and visually accentuates the optimised geometry of the performance and add-on parts.
At the centre of the front end, distinctive MINI design cues such as the elliptical headlights and hexagonal radiator grille sharpen the car’s identity. Elements such as the powerdome, including the prominent air scoop in the bonnet, hexagonal honeycomb radiator grille and air intakes in the front apron intensify the car’s sporty appearance. Further colour accents in Highspeed Orange enhance the visual impact of the headlights and air intake.
The lower edge of the large front apron reach down close to the road, while the car’s wide track and prominently flared wheel arches promise top-level handling and high cornering speeds. Another technical highlight is the front apron’s all-carbon-fibre construction, which reduces the car’s weight. The carbon matting is now directly visible and presented with a high-gloss paint finish with a red hexagon graphic.
The sides.
In keeping with MINI design language, the narrowing windows and rising shoulderline creates a wedge shape from the side and gives the car the appearance of powering forward even before it turns a wheel. Lower down, voluminous surfaces fuse into a muscular body and endow the flanks with agility and dynamism. The car number 0059 references the year the classic Mini was born: 1959.
Carbon-fibre side skirts provide the body with its lowest edge. 19-inch Racetrack lightweight wheels in a classic multi-spoke design underline the design study’s performance aspirations. Contrasts in Curbside Red metallic - together with the Highspeed Orange on the inside of the rims – and the GP logo bring extra verve to the wheel design. Elsewhere, Curbside Red metallic and Highspeed Orange provide highlights to the exterior mirror bases and door handles respectively.
The rear end.
Surfaces on the rear are bordered by precisely formed air-channelling elements and the positioning of the LED rear lights on the outside underscores the car’s dynamic focus. Sophisticated touches, such as the half-Union Jack on each side, represent a nod to the concept car’s British origins, while also providing a sporty, technical flourish. The prominent roof spoiler is a visual statement of intent and slots cleanly into the geometry of the side elements.
Like the front end and flanks, the lower section of the car has a precise and dynamic design. Carbon-fibre air vents and air deflectors are in optimum positions, and the two rain lights at the outer edges at the rear improve visibility in wet races. The distinctive central twin tailpipes low down at the rear embody the John Cooper Works DNA to eye-catching effect.
The interior – stripped down and with track-inspired elements.
The interior of the MINI John Cooper Works GP Concept is pared back to its core elements with its roll cage joined on board by little more than a pair of low-mounted bucket seats with five-point belts and a cleanly-designed instrument panel. Gearshift is by paddles on the steering wheel.
All the elements of the interior are focused directly on the driver. The display and control concept with digital instrument cluster and Head-Up Display places relevant information directly in the driver’s eye-line, allowing absolute focus on the road to be maintained. Interaction between driver and car is otherwise digital, including touch-control adjustment of suspension settings in MINI’s familiar central instrument. It is left to the large emergency cut-off button and the traditional MINI toggle switches with start/stop button to provide a bridge between the digital and analogue worlds.
A rear seat bench, headliner and conventional door trim panels are conspicuous by their absence, sacrificed in the interests of minimising weight. Instead, the surfaces between the elements of the roll cage and the rear compartment are trimmed in lightweight panels with textured details and a hexagonal pattern. This creates a transition between the unadorned rear and more design-rich front cabin. The doors are opened using recessed grips with fabric straps, leaving the driver and passenger to climb out through the roll cage in typical racing car style.
The interior combines its pared-back sporting forms with eye-catching elements and bold colour accents. The result is a face-off between the less familiar aesthetic of a racing-car bodyshell and the exclusivity of high-quality production-car appointments. Against the backdrop of the white basic space, black, patinated smooth leather on the head restraints and bolsters provides a neat contrast with the back-and-white knitted textile in the central section of the seats. A new 3D knitting technique provides a classy and modern feel, while red accents make a visual statement. The aluminium roll cage stands apart clearly from the black 3D-printed parts in the doors and instrument panel, and a lightly-structured trim element with hexagonal graphic reinforces the sporty, modern look. Curbside Red metallic adds a colour accent to selected functional components and Highspeed Orange acts as a complementary colour on the belt straps, inscriptions and the stitching of the steering wheel and seats.
With 3D printing and 3D knitting techniques, MINI is bringing technologies to the interior of the concept car which will enable both tool-free production and simple personalisation in the future.
MINI + high performance + race-track feeling = John Cooper Works.
The character of the MINI John Cooper Works GP Concept is defined by a motorsport heritage which stretches back over more than five decades. Indeed, the classic Mini was transformed by legendary sports car designer John Cooper into a byword for driving fun on the road and an extraordinarily successful competitor on the racetrack and rally scene. A motorsport career which began exactly 50 years ago included three overall victories in the Monte Carlo Rally. Today, the John Cooper Works name is synonymous with products and models where quality is rooted in established motorsport know-how and an association with the British premium small car which dates back to 1959.
The new A 35 4MATIC expands the AMG model range by an attractive entry-level model. The 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine generates an output of 225 kW (306 hp) and produces a peak torque of 400 Nm. An acceleration time of 4.7 seconds for 0-100 km/h and the top speed of 250 km/h (electronically limited) meet the customers' requests for high driving dynamics in the compact segment. The standard-fit AMG Performance 4MATIC all-wheel drive varies the torque distribution anywhere from pure front-wheel drive to a 50:50 ratio and thereby combines best possible traction with tremendous driving fun. Five AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive modes enable a wide spread in the vehicle characteristics from comfortable to dynamic.
An eye-catcher inside and out
The exterior with flics on the air intakes of the front apron, AMG-specific radiator grille, front splitter and trim elements in silver chrome embodies the characteristic AMG design. The optionally available 19-inch wheels and the AMG side sill panelling reinforce the typical AMG look. In the interior of the A 35, the new MBUX multimedia system combines an intuitive operating structure with sporty design. Especially the 'Supersport' style with central round rev counter and indicator bars with 3D effect produces a decidedly emotionally appealing visualisation of the driving information on the Widescreen Display. A new feature is the distinct AMG centre console with Touchpad and additional switches for operating functions such ESP, manual transmission mode and adaptive adjustable damping.
Attractive packages as optional equipment
The optional AMG Aerodynamics Package developed in the wind tunnel improves handling at high speeds. The front apron with larger front splitter and additional high-gloss flics as well as the fixed AMG rear aerofoil increase the downforce. The lateral spoilers around the visual air outlets of the rear apron and the diffuser blade also have a high-gloss black finish.
Likewise optionally available is the AMG Night Package. It underscores the expressive vehicle character with striking black design elements, an effect further boosted by the heat-insulating dark tinted windows aft of the B-pillar.
Edition 1 – for even more individuality
The Edition 1 provides additional exclusivity and dynamics already at the market launch: Inside and out, it compels with choice details and is limited to 18 months. The equipment features include the AMG Aerodynamics Package and the AMG Night Package. The denim blue paint finish and the "tech gold" accents on the side mirror housings and the lower sections of the doors produce an especially exclusive look. The 19-inch Livorno wheels with high-sheen finish feature a wheel cover with centre-lock look and also sport that same "tech gold" hue. The AMG Performance seats upholstered with black/grey ARTICO/DINAMICA featuring blue accents and medium-grey contrasting topstitching as well as the AMG Performance steering wheel emphasise the sportiness in the interior. The Edition 1 also comes with heated seats and ambient lighting as standard. Aluminium trim elements and an 'Edition' badge on the steering wheel add visual highlights in the interior.
