The arrival of the new BMW M2 CS heralds BMW M GmbH's first ever foray into the premium compact segment with its prestigious and overtly sporty portfolio of limitedrun special-edition models. The exclusive BMW M2 CS is positioned one rung up the performance ladder from the BMW M2 Competition and will build on the success already achieved by the BMW M3 CS and BMW M4 CS models. This Immensely capable car also serves as a basis for the BMW M2 CS Racing model, BMW M Motorsport's new entry point to amateur racing and the new Clubsport segment from the 2020 season.
The BMW M2 CS has an even sharper look about it than the BMW M2 Competition and blends outstanding track performance with unrestricted everyday usability to create a four-seater sports car of exceptional appeal. The BMW M2 CS sets new, class-leading standards for acceleration, handling dynamics, precision and agility, making it the perfect choice for fans of high-calibre high-performance cars. The new gateway into the world of BMW M GmbH products will also stir the emotions of a younger target audience. Prices for the BMW M2 CS start at €95,000.
"The joint development of the BMW M2 CS and BMW M2 CS Racing underscores the close links between BMW Motorsport and BMW M GmbH," explains Markus Flasch, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW M GmbH. "Our skillsets converge at the midway point between high-performance cars for the road and all-out racing machines - i.e. in the expanding Clubsport segment. We're covering this niche with the Clubsport variant of the BMW M2 CS Racing and will be working in a similar direction with future special-edition models from BMW M."
BMW Group Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt adds: "The BMW Motorsport engineers have worked closely with their colleagues at BMW M GmbH in taking the ideal basis provided by the BMW M2 CS and adopting much of the knowledge gained in the development of the BMW M4 GT4. As a result, they have raised the bar in the entry-level class of race competition to a new high with the M4 GT4's smaller brother, the BMW M2 CS Racing. I have no doubt we'll be able to build on the success achieved so far by BMW M customer racing cars with this new model."
BMW M GmbH has used an array of carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) components to give the limited-run special-edition BMW M2 CS an extremely sporty appearance that vividly conveys its exceptional agility and dynamism before a wheel has turned. The output of the twin-turbocharged straight-six engine has increased to 331 kW (450 hp) - up 29 kW (40 hp) on the BMW M2 Competition - while the Adaptive M suspension hitherto reserved for the M4 models and the Michelin Cup tyres transfer this immense power to track and road alike to optimum effect. Commensurate levels of stopping power are provided by the standard M Sport brakes with red-painted callipers or optional M Carbon ceramic brakes.
The BMW M2 CS delivers instant visual confirmation of its sporting credentials, its stylistic modifications clearly distinguishing it from the BMW M2 Competition. The design team at BMW M GmbH focused in particular on the use of carbon fibre, a material that stirs the emotions and creates a strong link to racing cars through the intelligent lightweight design and exceptional body strength it promotes.
New bonnet and roof made from carbon fibre
A new CFRP bonnet, created specially for the BMW M2 CS, complements the BMW M2 premiere of a roof also made entirely from carbon fibre. The bonnet of the BMW M2 Competition has been modified to include an eye-catching central air vent in High-gloss Black towards its leading edge. The new design increases the car's downforce over the front wheels and also aids engine cooling. The bonnet's weight, meanwhile, has been halved. The new roof, with its sandwich design, makes the body more rigid and appears to have been cut from the same mould as the rest of the car; no trim strips are needed, meaning no visible joins either. This has the additional effect of enhancing acoustics, both inside and outside the car. And dispensing with the customary roof bows and insulation also saves weight. Together with the lighter bonnet, this serves to lower the vehicle's centre of gravity, resulting in even better driving dynamics.
Front splitter, Gurney and rear diffuser optimise aerodynamics
The new front splitter located south of the front apron, the Gurney spoiler lip on the boot lid and the rear diffuser are all made from exposed carbon fibre, giving them a striking appearance. Inspired by aerodynamic components used in racing cars, this trio of add-ons gives the M2 CS greater downforce and channels the air flowing around and underneath the body to optimise aerodynamics. The carbon-fibre caps of the streamlined M twin-stalk exterior mirrors round off the CFRP elements in the M2 CS. Bringing the car's design to a stunning conclusion is the redesigned dual-branch exhaust system with its quartet of stainless-steel tailpipes, M logo and M2 CS badge. The Misano Blue metallic paint finish is exclusive to the new BMW M2 CS.
The new BMW M2 CS extends a family lineage established by the BMW M3 CS and BMW M4 CS. It has been engineered for the express purpose of delivering scintillating track performance, but without falling short of the mark in everyday road use. The BMW M2 Competition's top-class agility, driving feel, handling stability, steering precision and controllability at the limit have been elevated another notch to make the BMW M2 CS a sports car of indisputable authenticity.
Adaptive M suspension and M Sport brakes fitted as standard
Underpinning the sensational driving dynamics of the BMW M2 CS are the standard-fitted Adaptive M suspension and M Sport brakes designed with the help of the motor-racing know-how. Formerly the preserve of the M4 models, Adaptive M suspension gives drivers the choice of Comfort, Sport and Sport+ modes, each of which alters the damper settings. Comfort mode offers excellent ride comfort in everyday urban driving, Sport lends itself to powering along country roads, and drivers taking their BMW M2 CS out on a track will want to select Sport+; the firmest chassis setup minimises body movement and maximises dynamic performance. The Electric Power Steering with M-specific characteristics - which controls power assistance electronically according to the car's speed and the Drivelogic settings selected - allows the driver to adapt the level of power assistance to suit their personal preferences and is also adjusted in line with the three suspension modes. The M Sport brakes also benefit from the motor racing experience of BMW M GmbH. Compared with the M compound brakes featured on the BMW M2 Competition, the brake discs are larger (front: diameter 400 mm, rear: diameter 380 mm) and the brake callipers - painted in a bold red colour - have also been upgraded (front: six-piston fixed callipers, rear: four-piston fixed callipers). This highly capable system delivers exceptional braking performance with outstanding stopping power in all conditions, plus excellent fade resistance and thermal stability. The BMW M2 CS is also available with the option of M Carbon ceramic brakes with six-piston callipers at the front and four-piston units at the rear. These are lighter, can withstand the sorts of extreme loads exerted during track use and are longer lasting too.
The CFRP high-precision strut brace employed in the M2 CS has already seen action in the BMW M2 Competition. This single-piece carbon-fibre component weighs a mere 1.5 kg and combines with the tower-to-bulkhead strut to give the car's front end a high level of stiffness. This, in turn, has a positive impact on turn-in response and steering precision. The front and rear axles have a lightweight aluminium construction and transfer forces laterally by means of ball joints with zero play for high-precision wheel location. Specially designed elastomeric bearings in the torque arms result in direct longitudinal transmission of the chassis forces, which also ensures the desired level of ride comfort. All of the five-link rear axle's control arms and wheel carriers are made from forged aluminium. The rear-axle subframe, with its lightweight steel construction, also has a rigid bolted connection to the body without any flexible rubber elements. Typically used in racing cars, this type of mounting further improves wheel location and directional stability.
Active M Differential and specially tuned DSC
The electronics of the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system govern the car's handling with fingertip sensitivity, generate excellent grip when driving in wet or slippery conditions and prevent an abrupt breakaway of traction middrift. The DSC is aided in its task by the Active M Differential, an electronically controlled multi-plate locking mechanism that enhances traction and handling stability with unbeatable precision and speed. The locking effect can be varied between 0 and 100 per cent, depending on the driving situation, and factors in steering angle, accelerator pedal position, brake pressure, engine torque, wheel speeds and yaw rate. By analysing the situation in this way, the control unit can detect an imminent loss of traction on one side and calculate the ideal degree of lock, which is then applied using an electric motor. It takes just 150 milliseconds to generate maximum locking torque of 2,500 Newton metres (1,843 lb-ft). This serves to prevent wheel spin even in extreme conditions on slippery surfaces or when one rear wheel has far less grip than the other.
The Active M Differential can even intervene proactively in certain situations. When pulling away on slippery road surfaces, for example, a certain percentage of lock is engaged before a wheel can start to spin, ensuring that both wheels build up identical amounts of slip at the same time. And in high-speed corners, the levels of lateral acceleration and drive torque dictate the degree of the lock required to stop an unloaded inside wheel from turning too fast. The differential's permanent and continuously variable control also results in sharper agility, elimination of understeer at corner entry and superior directional stability during braking and load changes.
M Dynamic Mode (MDM) is a DSC sub-function that can be selected as required to allow a greater degree of wheel slip. This can be beneficial in certain situations, such as high-speed track driving. It pushes back the intervention points for the DSC system's various stabilising measures, giving drivers extra leeway to explore the car's dynamic limits. Increasing wheel slip enhances traction, which then helps to propel the car down the road with extra assurance. More significant oversteer and understeer are possible, as are moderate, controlled drifts. However, drivers can still depend on the array of DSC driving safety aids to intervene in critical situations.
19-inch wheels with Cup tyres
The BMW M2 CS rides on 19-inch Y-spoke forged wheels in a High-gloss Black finish. Here again, the M GmbH engineers have applied the principles of systematic lightweight design. As a result, the 9J x 19 wheels at the front weigh just 9 kilograms, while the 10J x 19 items at the rear add less than 10 kilograms. This keeps unsprung masses low and is another factor in the extraordinarily dynamic potency of the M2 CS. The wheels can also be specified in an optional matt gold shade. The front wheels are shod with 245/35 ZR 19 Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres that have been specially matched to the M2 CS and offer the ultimate in lateral control, directional stability, steering feel and steering precision, while the 265/35 ZR 19 tyres at the rear optimise traction, lateral control and directional stability. Customers intending to use their M2 CS mainly for everyday driving can select the no-cost option of Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres, which generate more grip on wet roads than the Cup items.
The twin-turbocharged six-cylinder in-line engine in the BMW M2 CS is derived from the unit fitted in the BMW M4 Competition Coupe and offers the best of both worlds. On the one hand, it has an extraordinary appetite for revs for a turbocharged engine, plus linear power build-up over a wide rpm band and a distinctive soundtrack. And M TwinPower Turbo technology keeps peak torque on tap across a wide engine speed range. But the engine will also put a smile on the driver's face with its exemplary efficiency.
The straight-six generates maximum output of 331 kW (450 hp) at 6,250 rpm, 29 kW (40 hp) more than the BMW M2 Competition. Peak torque of 550 Newton metres (405 lb-ft) is on tap between 2,350 and 5,500 rpm. This enables the BMW M2 CS to race to 100 km/h (62 mph) from rest in just 4.0 seconds when equipped with the optional seven-speed M doubleclutch transmission (M DCT). The same sprint takes 4.2 seconds with the six-speed manual gearbox. The top speed of the special-edition model, which comes complete with the M Driver's Package, is an electronically governed 280 km/h (174 mph). Manual models achieve combined fuel consumption figures of 10.4 - 10.2 l/100 km [27.2 - 27.7 mpg imp) and combined CO2 emissions of 238 - 233 g/km. Cars fitted with the M DCT transmission burn just 9.6 - 9.4 l/100 km [29.4 - 30.1 mpg imp) on the combined cycle with CO2 emissions of 219 - 214 g/km. The petrol particulate filter fitted in the BMW M2 CS in the relevant EU countries further reduces particulate emissions.
Instantaneous response thanks to M TwinPower Turbo technology
The package of BMW TwinPower Turbo technology comprises two fastresponse mono-scroll turbochargers, High Precision Injection direct petrol injection, VALVETRONIC variable valve timing and Double-VANOS fully variable camshaft timing. The variable valve and camshaft timing combine to enable continuous adjustment of intake valve lift as required. This allows the engine to build up its power to optimum effect while also responding at lightning speed to the drivers' inputs. At the same time, fuel consumption and exhaust emissions are reduced. The six-cylinder engine's crankcase is remarkably rigid thanks to its closed-deck construction, paving the way for higher cylinder pressures and improved power output. Cylinder walls with a wire-arc sprayed coating instead of liners help to keep the weight of the engine down.
Racing car experience to the fore
The level of performance offered by cars such as the BMW M2 CS places specific demands on engine oil supply during track use. This is an area where BMW M GmbH's many years of motor racing experience come into play. The oil sump, for instance, has an additional cover to restrict the lubricant's movement under the high lateral forces exerted during sharp changes in direction. There is also an extra oil scavenge pump and a sophisticated oil return system near the turbocharger to keep the oil circuit functioning smoothly under extreme acceleration and braking. This ensures a reliable supply of oil for every engine component under all circumstances - from everyday road use through to maximum attack on the track.
The BMW M2 CS makes allowance for the greater quantities of cooling air required by the engine with measures such a CFRP bonnet featuring design modifications over the BMW M2 Competition's. Incorporating an air vent, for example, helps to dissipate hot air more effectively. The BMW M2 CS has retained its sibling's large kidney grille and large air intakes in the front apron to optimise the flow of air through the car's front end. The track-tested cooling system originates from the BMW M4 with Competition Package and comprises a central radiator plus two radiators at the sides, along with an additional engine oil cooler. Models specified with the optional seven-speed M DCT also benefit from a separate transmission oil cooler. This sophisticated system ensures that optimum operating temperatures are maintained at all times, not only in everyday road use and on short urban journeys, but also during outings on the track.
Dual-branch exhaust system with two electrically controlled flaps
Offering even greater aesthetic and aural appeal than in the BMW M2 Competition, the exhaust system has a dual-branch design and concludes in a familiar quartet of tailpipes, each bearing the M logo. Two electrically controlled flaps ensure the BMW M2 CS emits a sound worthy of a BMW M model. The M Engine Dynamics Control function with direct selection buttons in the centre console allows drivers to vary the engine note further through their driving mode selection.
Choice of two transmissions
The BMW M2 CS is the first CS model from BMW to be fitted as standard with a six-speed manual gearbox, thereby catering to the often-expressed penchant of the M2's target clientele for a good stickshift. Standout characteristics include its compact construction and low weight, while carbon friction linings for smoother shifting also feature. Shift comfort is further improved by the gearbox's engagement speed control, which automatically blips the throttle when changing down and lowers the engine revs when changing up. This also gives the car extra stability when pushed hard on the track. Engagement speed control is deactivated when DSC is switched off.
Customers can also specify the optional seven-speed M double-clutch transmission (M DCT) with Drivelogic. DCT consists of two sub-transmissions (each with its own clutch), allowing both extremely fast gear changes without any interruption in power flow and silky smooth shifting, depending on the selected setting. The gear changes can be performed either automatically or manually by the driver using the gearshift lever on the centre console or the shift paddles on the M leather steering wheel. In both automatic and manual modes, the Drivelogic function gives the driver the choice of three preconfigured settings: EFFICIENT, SPORT and SPORT+. In automatic mode these alter shift timing, shift speed and the automatic blip of the throttle on downshifts.
The manual mode settings only affect the speed of gear shifts, with the timing determined by the driver. The system is able to predict the driver's next gear selection based on rev speed, accelerator pedal position, acceleration and the chosen setting, allowing it to engage the next gear before the shift paddle has even been operated. At this point, one clutch is simply disengaged and the other engaged to complete the gear change with lightning speed.
The cabin of the BMW M2 CS blends an exclusive, authentic aesthetic with the sporty looks and feel of fine Alcantara and innovative lightweight design. Its centre console is made entirely of lightweight carbon fibre, producing a weight saving of more than 50 per cent over the standard car's. CFRP has also been used for the door pulls and door panel trim.
On their way into the BMW M2 CS, drivers are welcomed by a door sill plate with M2 CS badging before settling into the same lightweight M Sport seat fitted in the BMW M4 CS - an ergonomic and stylistic masterpiece of its kind. The seat's bucket-style design takes its inspiration directly from motor racing and guarantees optimum lateral support even when the driver is pushing the limits on the race track. The seat backrests are upholstered in Merino leather and Alcantara, their red contrast stitching also gracing the armrests, the centre console and the door and side panel trim. The front seats' integral head restraints feature BMW M stripes, while the backrests sport CS badging. CSspecific red contrast stitching appears again on the Merino leather rear seats.
M Sport steering wheel with Alcantara covering and centre marker
The optional M Sport steering wheel with exclusive Alcantara covering injects another shot of authentic racing flair into the cabin. It has a red centre marker to make racing drivers feel at home, and offers unbeatable grip in all driving situations. The distinctive M2 CS badging in the instrument cluster can be clearly seen through the M Sport steering wheel. Fine Alcantara also adorns the centre-console armrest and an interior trim strip on the instrument panel. The trim strip's large red CS logo clearly identifies this as the new rangetopping car in the BMW M2 line-up - one that cuts a dashing figure both on the track and in day-to-day road driving.
CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA, Calif. (Nov. 15, 2018) -- With more than 46 million Toyota Corollas sold globally since its introduction in 1966, it would be difficult to find a driver who did not recognize the name. Everyone, it seems, has a Corolla story. Many, though are going to be doing double takes when they see the re-imagined and reconfigured 2020 Toyota Corolla sedan. And that’s exactly the point.
The 12th-generation Toyota Corolla made its arrival in two chapters: the all-new Corolla hatchback arrived earlier this year, and now comes the current best-selling Corolla body style, the sedan. Both are based on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA), which is far more than a new body structure, bringing together new approaches to engineering, design, assembly, and materials.
TNGA transforms both Corolla styles into drivers’ delights while also bolstering the model’s renowned value and reliability. Both draw from the same DNA and share powertrains. It’s no surprise, then, that the 2020 Corolla sedan dramatically elevates this model’s focus on comfort and refinement while also infusing it with the Corolla hatchback’s feisty personality.
The Corolla sedan’s bold new look is a perfect reflection of the bumper-to-bumper, wheels-to-roof transformation that has taken place. The TNGA platform means an available engine that produces more power than its predecessor yet delivers better fuel efficiency. TNGA imbues the Corolla sedan with greater agility, yet also with its smoothest, quietest ride. TNGA also means an elevated feeling of quality in every surface, switch and control the driver sees and touches. And, critically, TNGA delivers on Toyota’s commitment to driver and passenger safety with the Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 suite of active safety systems – standard on every Corolla sedan model.
Design Transformation Toyota shook up the midsize sedan ranks with the new-generation Camry, and now the compact sedan segment is in for a jolt with the 2020 Corolla sedan. From every angle, the new Corolla sedan looks lower and leaner, tauter and tighter. Powerful fender flares and generously curved fender top surfaces accent its sculpted, athletic core.
The design team called its working concept “shooting robust,” because they were shooting for a robust, confidence-inspiring stance. Yet, they had to maintain ample space for practical, real-world use. That’s why people buy sedans, after all.
The 2020 Corolla sedan rides on a 106.3-inch wheelbase, like its predecessor, yet any commonality ends there. Corolla sedan’s dynamic performance and stance benefit greatly from wider front (+0.47 in.) and rear (+0.87 in.) track dimensions. The front overhang was shortened by 1.3 in., and the rear overhang extended by more than half an inch. Height was reduced 0.8 in., and the hood lowered 1.4 in. for better forward visibility, made possible by mounting the engine lower. Those changes, plus many others, reduce the center of gravity by 0.39 in. That’s just one part of the transformation that has turned the Corolla sedan into a highly nimble, engaging machine to drive.
The bold front fascia details vary by model grade, with the SE and XSE putting on the sportiest face, including a body-color chin spoiler and aero stabilizing fins to emphasize the wide stance. The slim, J-shaped Bi-Beam LED headlamps wrap deeply into the front fenders and give the Corolla sedan a steely stare and a distinct nighttime signature. The sporty SE and XSE grades use triple J-shaped clearance lamps with LED light guides along with LED turn signals, creating a unique design signature.
The available Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS) provides a wider field of light and steers the low beam in the direction of the turn, based on steering angle and vehicle speed.
The rear leaves a distinct lighting impression as well, with narrow combination lamps that wrap deeply into the fenders. All 2020 Corolla sedan models use LEDs, the type and style varying by model grade. The sporty grades feature smoked outer light lenses.
What better way to showcase the Corolla sedan’s dramatic new sheet metal than with a dramatic new color? The new hue is a highly iridescent Celestite Grey Metallic. The rest of the palette includes Blizzard Pearl, Super White, Classic Silver Metallic, Black Sand Pearl, Barcelona Red, Blue Crush Metallic and Blueprint.
Big Wheels Keep on Turning The Corolla sedan transformation continues where the rubber meets the road. For the first time, 18-inch wheels are on the menu, standard on the SE and XSE grades. These multi-spoke alloys get their great looks from a complex machining technique paired with deep surfacing and dark accents. The LE grade rides on 16-inch steel wheels with covers. The XLE grade gets new 16-inch alloy wheels with three-dimensional twisted spokes.
Cabin Fever Simple. Warm. Inviting. Sensuous. These descriptors, seemingly from the luxury car realm, inspired designers’ efforts when visualizing Corolla sedan’s cabin. The result is called “sensuous minimalism.” It’s equal parts sporty and elegant, and, as always, Corolla-comfortable and durable.
A neat instrument panel lends an open, harmonious feeling thanks to its slimmer upper surface, with character lines that interlock with the door trim to convey an airy atmosphere. At the center of the instrument panel, within easy view for the driver and front passenger, sits a high-resolution 8-inch multimedia touchscreen for the standard Entune 3.0 multimedia system on all grades except the L grade, which gets a 7-inch multimedia touchscreen.
The center stack screen provides access to vehicle settings, audio controls, navigation, and Entune 3.0 apps. Climate controls, located below the multimedia portal, are fashioned in a bright, highly visible digitized configuration. The center stack flows into a wider console, with an armrest that’s nearly 0.8-in. longer than in the previous model, for greater comfort.
The cockpit provides an engaging interior space that surrounds the driver while offering a spacious environment for all passengers. Compared to the previous Corolla sedan, the instrument panel, cowl, hood and beltline height are all lowered to increase visibility and create the interior’s open feel.
High-gloss materials are paired with matte elements – silver accents with piano black and available contrasting stitching – to accentuate a premium look and feel. Minimized gaps between buttons and switches, along with the elimination of unnecessary lettering on switchgear, adds to the high-class ambience. Consistency in all materials’ and elements’ shape, color, grain, and gloss maximize continuity and aesthetic quality.
Available ambient lighting illuminates the front door trim, console tray and front cupholder. The tray can hold small items such as a smartphone or wallet, or, when so equipped, houses the optional Qi wireless device charging pad. Terraced cup holders adapt to various-sized beverage containers.
Digital Tools The Corolla sedan comes standard with a 4.2-inch thin film transistor (TFT) Multi-Information Display (MID), with an available 7-inch MID located between the high-grade tachometer and speedometer. With the larger display, the driver can switch between analog and digital speedometer styles.
Featuring rich graphics, the easy-to-read MID can be custom configured by the driver and offers intuitive operation to access information for the audio and multimedia systems, navigation system, vehicle information including fuel efficiency and tire pressure, the Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC), and other important parameters and system settings.
Front Row Seating From behind the wheel, the 2020 Corolla sedan feels quite different than its predecessor. Positioning the driver’s hip point 0.98-in. lower and 1.57-in. further rearward yields an optimized driving position. The result not only improves comfort, but also helps to lower the vehicle’s center of gravity and improves front/rear weight distribution.
These changes, along with the reconfigured lower beltline, slimmer instrument panel, slimmer A-pillars, and repositioned side view mirrors, result in more expansive outward visibility.
The front seats of the XSE and SE grades debut a new design featuring a unique shape with a headrest that nestles into the shoulder area, while the XLE and LE grades offer a seatback with a new U-shaped pattern. This major departure from a conventional square seatback design creates a sense of youthful, sporty appeal while improving comfort. The SE and XSE grades’ front seats offer thin, yet broad shoulder supports, evocative of a competition bucket seat, which overlap solid and thick side bolsters to achieve enhanced holding performance.
Seating materials include standard cloth or, in higher grades, SofTex. New interior color schemes include several striking two-tone accents. Choices include Blue/Black (black as the main color with blue highlights), Moonstone (light gray as the main color with dark gray highlights) and new Macadamia (a warm, inviting cream color).
Lots of Room, Not Noise The Corolla sedan may break tradition in the styling department, but it keeps to Toyota tradition when it comes to passenger room and comfort. The rear seat area retains excellent headroom, despite the lower roofline. Legroom is also plentiful, fulfilling a basic mission of sedans.
What you don’t get in the 2020 Corolla sedan is noise. Powertrain and road noise have been culled thanks to revised drivetrain efficiencies, plus the widespread implementation of sound-absorbing materials, including Thinsulate, sealants, foams, and silencers. The TNGA structure utilizes additional seals in its body panel gaps to insulate noise penetration and enhance air-sealing performance. As one example, the floor silencer pad is now one large piece, instead of many smaller elements. The inner and outer dash silencers are thicker. Combine all that with Corolla sedan’s quieter powertrain, and it’s one tranquil ride.
Cooler Where It Counts Corolla sedan’s fully redesigned air conditioning system is more compact, more efficient and more effective. One example of the smarter climate control is the innovative twin-layer recirculation/fresh air induction unit: In cold climates, it will automatically send dehumidified fresh air to the upper cabin to reduce glass fogging while promoting recirculation of warm cabin air in lower areas.
System controls, located below the multimedia portal, are fashioned in a bright, highly-visible digitized configuration. The climate control interface features a piano black background with satin and silver accents for a premium, high-quality look and feel.
Multi-choice Multimedia The 2020 Corolla sedan comes ready to pair with the driver’s digital life. The standard Entune 3.0 Audio includes an available 8-in. touchscreen display; six speakers; Apple CarPlay compatibility; Amazon Alexa; Entune 3.0 App Suite Connect; Safety Connect; Wi-Fi Connect; Scout GPS Link Compatible; Siri Eyes Free; auxiliary audio jack and USB 2.0 port with iPod connectivity and control; AM/FM; MP3/WMA playback capability; hands-free phone capability; voice recognition and music streaming via Bluetooth; customizable home screen; and weather/traffic info via Entune 3.0 App Suite.
The LE and SE grades get Entune 3.0 Audio with an 8-inch touch screen and 2 USB ports.
Entune 3.0 Audio Plus, standard on XSE, XLE and optional on SE CVT, adds an HD Radio and Weather/Traffic info; SiriusXM with Cache Radio; Entune 3.0 Connected Services; Service Connect, and Remote Connect.
Also available on the SE CVT is Entune 3.0 Audio Plus with JBL.
Topping the range is Entune 3.0 Audio Premium that’s optional on XSE and XLE. The package includes a JBL nine-speaker, 800-watt system with Clari-Fi; Dynamic Voice Recognition; Dynamic Navigation; Dynamic Points of Interest Search; and Destination Assist Connect.
JBL Audio system highlights include:
Next-Generation HID8 amplifier creates 800-watts of total power
Free-standing horn tweeters located in the A-pillar at ear level for optimal high-frequency performance

Featured apps for Entune systems include: Safety Connect® In the event of an accident or other emergency, assistance can be dispatched directly to the vehicle’s GPS location. Other connected services available on the Corolla include airbag-linked Automatic Emergency Notification, Manual Emergency Notification (SOS button) and Stolen Vehicle Locator. Service Connect Provides updates on everything from fuel level and mileage to maintenance alerts and more via email or the mobile app. Remote Connect Can lock and unlock doors, start the engine, locate the vehicle in a parking lot and monitor guest drivers. Wi-Fi Connect – powered by Verizon Connects up to five devices using the in-vehicle 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. Destination Assist Connect Directions and destinations delivered by a real person with 24-hour, en-route navigation assistance. Dynamic Navigation Provides the most up-to-date map data, routes and POI on its embedded system. (Available with Entune 3.0 Premium Audio.)
Dynamic Force is with You The 2020 Corolla sedan L, LE, and XLE grades will use the 1.8-liter engine (2ZR-FAE) found in the previous generation, yet with more horsepower and better fuel efficiency. The XSE and SE grades are powered by a completely-new 2.0-liter Dynamic-Force direct-injection inline four-cylinder engine (M20A-FKS). This new engine delivers more performance while using less fuel. Remarkably, the new Corolla sedan engine is physically smaller and lighter, helping to lower the car’s center of gravity and improve its overall balance.
Here are some of the tech bits on Corolla sedan’s new available engine:
The new Dynamic Force engine gets it high power and efficiency from a combination of high compression ratio (13:1), Toyota D4-S fuel injection combining direct and secondary port injectors, high-speed combustion, VVT-iE intelligent variable valve-timing on the intake side and VVT-i on the exhaust. VVT-iE uses an electric motor instead of oil pressure to control the variable valve timing.
A two-discharge port oil pump and a variable cooling system with electric water pump help maximize engine performance and efficiency. The more efficient cooling system also ensures quicker cabin heating on cold days and quicker cool-down when the air conditioner is used.
All of those technologies, along with ultra-low internal friction, yield a maximum thermal efficiency of 40 percent, very high for a passenger vehicle engine. You can’t feel thermal efficiency, but you can feel the effects of 169 peak horsepower at 6,600 rpm and 151 lb.-ft peak torque at 4,800 rpm.
Shifting Smarter Sedan buyer trends are shifting, and the 2020 Corolla sedan is right there with them. The new Dynamic-Shift CVT (continuously variable transmission) combines the smooth, fuel-efficient performance of a CVT with a more direct driving feel of a traditional geared automatic. The key to its distinct performance feel is a physical first gear used for start-off acceleration, before handing off to the CVT’s pulley system.
Because the launch gear is handling the higher input load at launch, the size of the CVT’s belt and pulley components could be reduced, yielding shifting speeds that are 20 percent faster than in a conventional CVT.
High-speed, high-response gear-shifting technology, using a multiplate wet clutch, switches power from the gearset to the CVT’s belt and pulleys. The Direct Shift CVT has simulated 10-speed Sequential Shiftmatic steps along with Sport Mode. Synchronization of the increasing engine revs and vehicle speed gives a linear acceleration feel.
For those who want to shift for themselves, the 2020 Corolla sedan offers an intriguing choice with the all-new 6-speed iMT (intelligent manual transmission). Like some premium sports cars, it features downshift rev-matching control, automatically detecting when the driver is shifting and quickly rev-matching to make any driver a stick-shift pro.
New control logic improves acceleration feel when starting off, and improved shift feel makes this a stick shift you want to use. Increased use of micro polishing on gear teeth reduces cabin noise. Standard Hill-start Assist Control (also on the CVT models), helps prevent the dreaded roll-back when starting off on an incline.
Platform: The Strong, Silent Type A super-rigid structure, lower center of gravity and highly refined suspension tuning endow the Corolla sedan with exemplary handling agility and ride comfort, along with a distinctive driving personality. This high-strength platform is fortified through the increased use of ultra-high-tensile steel as well as the application of new structural adhesive technology for enhanced body rigidity and occupant safety. Specifically, torsional rigidity is improved by 60 percent compared to its predecessor.
The new body uses a totally new multi-load path front structure to absorb frontal collision impact forces and disperses collision energy to help prevent deformation of the occupant compartment. High-tensile steel in the rocker panel reinforcements and the upper kick panel; wider underbody side members; strengthened rear bumper reinforcements, and thicker dashboard panel, floor panels, and underbody tunnel all improve energy dispersion in the event of a collision.
A squared figure-of-eight reinforced ring-shaped structure around the door openings, along with larger-diameter impact beams for the front and rear doors, are designed to help in the event of a side collision.
Sport Sedan Handling, Sedan Comfort The 2020 Corolla sedan looks the part of a fun-to-drive sport sedan, and the chassis delivers on the promise. The multi-link rear suspension is a major advance over the torsion beam setup used in the previous model, more adept at comfortably absorbing bumps while also ratcheting up agility.
The MacPherson strut front suspension, totally revised for this platform, uses sophisticated techniques, including a strut bearing mounted coaxially with the kingpin axis. This feature allows smoother upward suspension travel, especially while traversing bumps, resulting in more comfortable steering feel.
Overall, front and rear suspension friction has been reduced by 40 percent. Newly developed shock absorbers have been tuned to provide optimal damping force for dynamic handling and stability with exemplary ride comfort.
Foundation for Safety The 2020 Corolla sedan features eight standard airbags and Toyota’s Star Safety System, which includes Enhanced Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, Electronic Brake-force Distribution, Brake Assist, Anti-lock Braking System, and Smart Stop Technology. All Corolla sedan models come equipped with a standard backup camera.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 Significantly, all 2020 Toyota Corolla sedan models are equipped standard with Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, an advanced suite of integrated active and pre-collision safety features.
PCS (Pre-Collision System): Uses both a millimeter wave radar sensor and a forward-facing camera sensor for highly accurate detection of objects such as a vehicle or pedestrian or bicyclist in front of the vehicle. If the PCS determines there is a high probability of a collision, or if it deems a collision is unavoidable, the system is designed to automatically activate the brakes to help avoid the collision entirely or mitigate the impact force.
DRCC (Dynamic Radar Cruise Control): Designed for highway use, has a vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode that utilizes a millimeter wave radar sensor and camera sensor to maintain a pre-set follow distance from the preceding vehicle. The Full-speed DRCC version, standard on CVT models, is also capable of low-speed following, including stop-and-go traffic. The Corolla sedan is designed to stop when the vehicle ahead comes to a stop, maintaining an appropriate distance to it. The driver enjoys more relaxed driving in situations that can be annoying and fatiguing, while also gaining a measure of safety.
LDA (Lane Departure Alert) with Steer Assist: Provides the driver with audible and visual warnings (vehicle positioning warning image shown in the Multi-Information Display) and, if necessary, is designed to provide steering assistance if it determines the possibility of deviation from the driving lane. It is also designed to detect vehicle sway (excess weaving within the driving lane) that might indicate driver distraction, inattention or drowsiness.
LTA (Lane Tracing Assist): LTA, available on CVT-equipped models, is enabled when LDA and DRCC are both on and active. LTA employs a lane centering function that is designed to make constant steering inputs to help the driver keep the vehicle in the center of its lane. LTA is designed for uses on relatively straight highways to preemptively avoid unwanted lane departures and reduce driver fatigue.
AHB (Automatic High Beams): When enabled, the AHB system uses an in-vehicle camera to help detect the headlights of oncoming vehicles and taillights of preceding vehicles, then automatically switches between high and low beams as appropriate.
RSA (Road Sign Assist): Designed to recognize speed limit, Stop, Yield, and Do Not Enter signs and displays them on the vehicles MID to help assist the driver.
Blind Spot Monitor is a standard or optional feature, depending on model grade. When an approaching vehicle is detected, the system is designed to alert the driver using indicators on the outside mirrors. Brake Hold, when engaged, is a convenient technology that helps reduces driver workload while waiting at a traffic light or while driving in traffic. When the driver depresses the accelerator pedal, Brake Hold releases.
The 2020 Corolla will be available at dealerships Spring 2019.

01 «OPTIMISTIC» : AUDACIOUS BY DESIGN
1. Distinctively offbeat
There’s nothing like The New C3 on the road today, in terms of audacious design and charisma. Its offbeat attitude bristles with freshness end energy, backed by rugged strength. It shuns the usual stereotypes of its segment to prefer a highly individual and instantly recognizable outline of its own, lending a distinctively dynamic slant to the curves that endeared its predecessor to such a wide audience.
In volumes and proportions it takes on a unique morphology, in true Citroën style. The high-standing front end is strong and compelling, giving a powerful impression of robustness with a horizontally balanced outline right through from the waist. The resulting vehicle posture looks natural and steady. The fluid curves and muscular flanks lend vigour and power. The pure, wholesome, unaggressive appearance is highlighted by potent graphic features. New C3 is different. It’s energetic and modern, yet calm and reassuring.
With Citroën’s characteristic two-tier front light signature, the car seems to looks upward, enhancing the impression of bonnet height. The double chrome bar underlining the chevrons runs right through to the LED daytime running lamps, enhancing the impression of width. The round headlamps express a strong technological content. The protective bumper below is in the body colour, again to enhance the sense of height and lend a go-anywhere spirit. The foglamps feature colour surrounds for a touch of sparkle.
Looking at the side, the first detail you notice is the floating roof held by the black windscreen pillars, and the taut roof curves accentuating the dynamic outline. The car’s protective function shows through clearly in the balanced proportion between body panels and glazed surfaces. The horizontal belt line continues the deliberately high bonnet line, producing a steady, stable, reassuring posture. Body surfaces are fluid and unaggressive, extending down over the wheels, which have the largest diameter of any car in this segment (640 mm), another strong character feature. The large wheels also contribute to vehicle comfort, making for a high flank (even with 17” wheels) and filling the arches, which can be fitted with extensions for a crossover appearance. At the rear, the generously sized, muscular wings give the car a dynamic appearance, an impression accentuated by the very short overhangs.
The Airbump® panels (air-filled bumps with a scratch-proof surface as seen on Cactus) are a Citroën signature feature, giving personality and style, as well as protecting the vehicle. The aliphatic thermoplastic polyurethane material used in the Airbump® panels gives excellent resistance to everyday aggression, from sunlight, water, ageing, scratches, etc. Each comprises six air-filled bumps at the door bottom, an especially vulnerable area of the car in an urban environment. The Airbump® panels have a white or red graphic, depending on the version.
The rear of the vehicle emphasizes width, with smooth surfaces providing an ideal backdrop for the 3D rear lamps, which lend a unique, high-tech identity to New C3. The lower protection affords good everyday protection. The C3 badge is different to that sported by the previous model: the figure 3 appears in black with a chrome surround, recalling the gloss black chevrons with chrome surround used by Citroën models since C4 Cactus.
In tune with its times, all-round attention has been given to aerodynamics on C3. The roof is 4 cm lower than on the previous model. And all surfaces are optimized allowing a clean a controlled airflow.
2. Spacious interior designed as a living area
The New C3 interior is designed to feel like an extension to the driver’s home, a place it feels good to be in. It’s welcoming, contemporary, intuitive and superbly comfortable. It’s safe and peaceful. The Citroën designers drew inspiration from non-automotive worlds (architecture, furniture, decoration, etc.) to define its volumes and materials. It’s also an incitement to escapade, expressed through detailed features such as the trunk straps on the doors, another little offbeat signature of the Citroën range.
The basic interior design principles taken up in New C3 are uncluttered space, consistency, full and soft shapes. The perception of space is immediately suggested by a horizontal layout, and especially by the horizontal dashboard, which runs right across the whole vehicles width. The uncluttered, monolithic dashboard immediately clarifies the simplicity-oriented design approach to the passenger compartment as a whole. Technological content is prominent, in the form of the 7” touchscreen that appears suspended in the centre. The chrome-surround air vents at either side of the dashboard again enhance the impression of width.
The dashboard design features a broad crosswise trim that lends a sense of both width and character. The customer has a choice of finishes for this feature, which makes a strong statement on design quality. It can be painted, wrap with textile or TEP lining, with or without over-stitching, and a chrome or colour surround. It matches the seat material.
The seats, key items in on-board wellbeing, have a unique design, wide and generous. Again we see the pervasive emphasis on width, a crosswise prominence amplifying the impression of space and expressing the virtues of comfort. The impression of comfort is further stated in the choice of bright, warm materials having a deliberately non-automotive look and feel. There is a very strong sense of overall stylistic coherence throughout.
3. Extensive customization capability, unique for a mid-range model
Customization is an increasingly widespread social phenomenon, in response to people’s wish to express their own personal style choices. New C3 is the first mid-range model to offer an extensive and coherent customization capability, which goes further than add-on colour choices to ensure a quality, harmonious end result consistent with both personality and value. Customization covers both exterior and interior. Exterior appearance choices range from pop to classic, from sportslike to trendy. And the interior mood can emphasize warmth and cosiness, or dynamism and technology.
Freedom of expression, to create a car matched to the driver’s personality, starts with the two-tone vehicle exterior colour scheme. There’s a choice of nine body colours (Banquise White, Perla Nera Black, Shark Grey, Aluminium Grey, Ruby Red, Almond Green, Cobalt Blue, Power Orange and Sand) and three roof colours (Opal White, Onyx Black, Aden Red), which make for 36 possible combinations in all. So customers might like to brighten up a classic body colour with a colourful roof, or moderate a perky body colour with a more sober roof. Breadth of choice is an important factor contributing to the fresh, modern stance taken by New C3.
Colour choice goes beyond the body alone, with various features taking on the roof colour to produce both character and good overall consistency. The roof colour is found in the foglamp trims at the front, the Airbump® surrounds at the side, the wing mirror shells and the rear C pillar graphic.
Interior customization takes the form of a choice of four possible moods, each expressed in upholstery material, matched to the dashboard trim, and various colour and harmony features. There’s something for everybody.
The standard mood is uncluttered and neutral, with yellow over-stitched upholstery.
The Metropolitan Grey mood puts the emphasis on warmth and brightness, with soft colours and textiles, on the dashboard trim as well as the seat upholstery.
The Urban Red mood combines dark and bright colours to produce a dynamic feel. The lined dashboard trim features red over-stitching and has a red surround over the whole width.
The Hype Colorado mood uses soft upmarket materials and special upholstery, with a colour contrast effect and width-wise signature, harmonizing with a two-tone leather-covered steering wheel.
02. «HUMAN»: ON-BOARD WELLBEING
Design of New C3 was driven throughout by the Citroën Advanced Comfort® programme - global, contemporary, coherent comfort. This innovative programme seeks to offer driver and passengers the unique experience of feeling genuinely at home in their cars.
1. An overriding design emphasis on driver and passenger wellbeing
The sensation of wellbeing starts with the comfortable seats, the panoramic sunroof that floods the passenger compartment in light, the large stowage features, and the generous space allocations. These first impressions are confirmed by the colours and materials, which draw overt inspiration from the worlds of furniture and travel.
The emphasis on wellbeing pervades the interior mood, produced by meticulous attention to colours, volumes, materials and light. Shapes are full and soft, there is no clutter, and there’s a strong width-wise design orientation to enhance the impression of space. Overall harmony is also expressed in the stylistic coherence between doors, seats and dashboard, with the same soft, bright textile affording visual continuity and sense of quality. The harmonious interior is eminently cheerful and optimistic. It’s practical yet offbeat. It’s everything but dull. New C3 innovates by inviting driver and passengers to feel genuinely at home.
The interior is spacious, the most spacious in this vehicle category. The visual impression of width, in the dashboard and seat design, is confirmed by the actual shoulder width of 1379 mm (2 cm more than on the previous model). And legroom for rear-seat passengers is top-level too. The line of the front seats and the shape of the seat back uppers gives optimum visibility, bringing the rear-seat passengers nearer the front for a friendlier in-car atmosphere, bright and homely thanks to the panoramic sunroof.
Great attention was given to the New C3 seats, which appear sculpted in a modern style to suggest generous width and comfort. Seat bottom and back dimensions give an immediate impression of space. The line of the seats is engaging, inspired by furniture design to suggest relaxation and extend an invitation to pleasurable travel.
The seats use quality exterior materials and supple interior foams to give excellent lumbar support and approach comfort. So comfort involves a two-stage process: soft and welcoming when the passenger takes the seat but firm and reassuring thereafter. The supple seat foams have another purpose, namely to filter out the untoward effect of irregular road surfaces. This is another important factor contributing to the overall sense of in-car comfort.
Particularly agile thanks to its 10.7m turning diameter of radius, the new C3 measures 3,99m and offers compactness in town. It has 5 doors and 5 places making it practical in all circumstances.
2. Advanced ergonomics for a smooth driving experience
For true homely comfort, the car also has to offer a hassle-free user experience, with fluid, intuitive access to vehicle functions. Under the Citroën Advanced Comfort® programme, New Citroën C3 was designed with ergonomics uppermost in mind, as seen in the numerous ingenious stowage features, the clearly staged presentation of driver information, and a wealth of intuitive technologies for making life easier.
New C3 promises great everyday practicality. Designers paid special attention to stowage facilities, designed for optimum functionality without compromising interior harmony. There’s an ingenious central cubby, designed to keep maximum free space at the front of the vehicle. And the glove box is the largest in this vehicle segment. The front doors have capacious and ingenious cubbies, in a light colour to contrast with what’s in them, making things easier to find. And the New C3 boot volume approaches 300 litres, which cuts down on the often difficult task of deciding what to take and what not to take.
A smooth driving experience also calls for an intuitive, interactive and responsive interface, which New C3 offers through its 7” touchscreen tablet, acting as the vehicle control centre. This provides modern, intuitive access to all vehicle functions, and makes for a superbly uncluttered dashboard. The tablet uses capacitive screen technology, for optimum response. And the groove at the bottom acts as a handrest, for optimally comfortable usability.
Convenience continues with the car’s hands-free access and ignition system, which means you can lock/unlock and start the car without even needing to take the key out of your pocket. The car recognizes its driver as you approach.
03«SMART» : UP-TO-THE-MINUTE TECHNOLOGIES
1. Citroën ConnectedCam™
The Citroën ConnectedCam™ system is a practical, convenient and friendly Citroën-made technology making its first worldwide appearance on New C3. It’s a connected camera (wide 120° angle, full HD, 2 million pixels) with GPS and a 16 GB internal memory, fitted just behind the rear-view mirror, from where it records what the driver sees through the windscreen, logging the driving experience for two main purposes:
The driver can click to safely take photos (scenery, sunsets, whatever), for keeping or sharing on the social networks immediately, or keep the button pressed to shoot films up to 20 seconds long for sharing once the car is stationary. Stored content is directly accessible for keeping or sharing via the free application Citroën ConnectedCamTM.
In the event of vehicle impact, the system switches on automatically to record and save. The video can run for up to 1½ minutes (30 seconds before and 60 after). This footage can be useful as evidence following an incident
With the Citroën ConnectedCam application you can also geolocate your vehicle and store the position so that you can find it easily.
2. A wealth of useful technologies
The PSA Group A platform was optimized for this new model, bringing an excellent footprint/space ratio, an appealing morphology, and superb comfort and efficiency. For comfort, an advanced suspension system was used, based on a proven axle system architecture (pseudo Macpherson with deformable strut). This very effectively filters out road surface irregularities, letting the body “breathe” through minor vertical motion, a typically Citroën suspension signature. Soundproofing is as good as it gets, as is safety, with features such as the new “H” crossbar under the seats, for the best possible impact withstand.
New C3 comes with a choice of latest-generation highly efficient and fuel-economical PureTech petrol and BlueHDi diesel engines. There’s a choice of three PureTech three-cylinder petrol engines, with manual transmission: PureTech 68, 82 and 110 (Stop & Start). And there are two manual diesel powertrains: BlueHDi 75 (Stop & Start) and 100 (Stop & Start). For the ultimate in driveability and comfort, New C3 will shortly be coming in an EAT6 automatic version too.
New C3 comes with a vast array of useful assistance, safety and comfort technologies making life on board easier and enhancing the driving experience:
Technologies for assistance:
CITROËN Connect Nav on 7" Touch Drive interface is a new-generation connected touch-operated satnav system controlled by voice or from the 7” touchscreen tablet. It ties in with connected services such as TomTom Traffic, for realtime traffic information, geolocation and price details for service stations and carparks, weather forecasts, and information on local points of interest. There’s also an optional “danger zones” service that provides visual and audible warnings of accident black spots and dangers, in realtime. Car-driver interaction is enhanced by speech recognition for navigation, phone and media. functions
Mirror Screen technology duplicates the driver’s smartphone screen directly on the vehicle’s central screen. The driver can access to his multimedia content and monitor directly his smartphone from the digital screen. Available with Apple CarPlayTM, Android Auto (available early2017) and MirrorLink®.
The reversing camera, with parking aids, switches on automatically when reverse gear is selected, to provide valuable extended-vision assistance during vehicle manoeuvres, in the form of a main-screen display of what’s behind the car, along with colour markers indicating distance to any obstacles.
Hill-Start Assist helps with pullaway from standstill on gradients steeper than 3%, preventing unwanted vehicle motion down the slope when the brake pedal is released by stabilizing the car for two seconds.
Technologies for safety:
Lane Departure Warning System helps guard against driver drowsiness and momentary inattention, at speeds from 65 km/h. If the car crosses a lane marker line without the indicator having been activated, the system issues a visual and audible warning.
The Blind-Spot Monitoring System detects whether there is a vehicle in the blind spot, and shows this as a pictogram in the wing mirror. This system, which uses the same principle as a reversing radar, provides a valuable safety boost on routes such as urban motorways.
Driver Attention Alert warns the driver when it’s time to take a break, i.e. after two hours’ uninterrupted driving at speeds above 70 km/h, then every hour thereafter.
Citroën Connect Box with SOS Pack puts the driver in touch with a specialized assistance service. In the event of accident, a short message is sent in manual or automatic mode via GSM to a platform hosting the call processing service. The message includes vehicle identification, driver phone number and precise geographical location details.
Services available through Citroën Connect Packs, requiring the Citroën Connect Box with SOS Pack and assistance, come in three packs: the Monitoring pack (free), which includes a virtual service log and eco-driving advice; the Mapping pack (optional), for geolocating the vehicle; and the Tracking pack (optional), which maximizes the chance of finding a stolen vehicle. Pack subscriptions can be taken out at the dealership or online on the website MyCitroen.fr

NEW YORK – Chevrolet today introduced the 2017 Sonic – a more expressive, sporty take on the brand’s fun-to-drive small car. It offers big technologies such as a new MyLink system with segment-exclusive Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, and a fresh exterior with new LED signature lighting.
The updated styling complements new comfort and convenience features such as an available heated steering wheel and a standard 7-inch-diagonal color touchscreen for the new MyLink system. Rear Park Assist is also new, adding to one of the most comprehensive safety packages in the segment.
“The new styling and features of the 2017 Sonic reinforce its position as a fun, efficient small car with leading technology – all at an affordable price,” said Steve Majoros, director of marketing, Chevrolet Cars and Crossovers. “This is an important segment for Chevrolet, as we really have an opportunity to introduce ourselves to new buyers and show them what we’re all about.”
Like the new Trax, Sonic brings new, younger customers to the brand, with more than 20 percent of them younger than 35 – and nearly 30 percent trading in non-GM vehicles. It is also Chevrolet’s top vehicle for first-time new buyers.
The 2017 Sonic goes on sale this fall, offered in LS, LT and Premier trims on sedan models. The hatchback returns exclusively in RS guise, offered in LT and Premier trims. An RS package is also available on the sedan.
Sonic’s athletic exterior has an entirely new, expressive look echoing the global Chevrolet cues seen on vehicles such as the Cruze, Bolt EV and 2017 Trax.
It is a richer, more detailed design, with the front end featuring a new hood, new front fascia and new lighting elements. Projector-beam headlamps are standard, along with available LED daytime running lamps. Likewise, the rear fascia is new.
“With its trademark wheels-at-the-corners stance, the dramatic changes to the Sonic’s design give it and even sportier stance and attitude,” said Justin Thompson, exterior design manager.
There are also new 15-, 16- and 17-inch wheel designs and four new exterior colors offered in 2017: Orange Burst Metallic, Brimstone, Cajun Red Tintcoat and Arctic Blue Metallic (late availability).
Interior and technology enhancements
Sonic’s thoughtful interior retains its focus on delivering comfort, convenience and technology. A new, detailed gauge cluster incorporating an analog speedometer adds a higher degree of refinement to the cabin, complementing addition new comfort and convenience features.
For 2017, Sonic becomes the first in its segment to offer a power driver’s seat. Additional new features include:
Keyless Open and Start
Available heated cloth seats with new heated steering wheel
RS trim includes RS-logo floor mats, piano black décor, RS-badged flat-bottom steering wheel – with new, red cloth seating available.
Also new is a 7-inch-diagonal infotainment system designed to support the latest connectivity technologies, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility and 4G LTE with Wi-Fi hotspot. With the available 4G LTE connection, Sonic provides a Wi-Fi hotspot that allows passengers to connect up to seven compatible devices such as smartphones, laptops and tablets, to high-speed wireless Internet.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility is subject to their terms, privacy statements and data plan rates, as well as a compatible smartphone.
Sonic offers safety features designed to alert drivers to potential crash situations. Forward Collision Alert and Lane Departure Warning are available active safety features. Sonic also offers 10 standard air bags, Stabilitrak electronic stability control and an antilock braking system to help provide peace of mind. Rear Park Assist is new for 2017 and a rearview camera is now standard on all models.
The Sonic’s standard Ecotec 1.8L engine is estimated to deliver similar fuel economy numbers for the 2017 model year, however official EPA estimates are not yet available. Sonic’s fun-driving spirit returns with an available Ecotec 1.4L turbo engine, backed by a six-speed automatic or manual transmission. Rated at 138 horsepower (102 kW).
