BARCELONA, Spain (October 08, 2018) – The Nissan Qashqai is now on sale with an all-new 1.3-litre petrol engine. It’s the latest chapter in the success story of the Qashqai – Europe’s best-selling crossover – and one which further enhances the SUV’s appeal with consumers.
The highly efficient new engine – which is available in 140 PS and 160 PS outputs – delivers reduced fuel consumption and lower CO2 emissions. It draws on the strength and resources of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance and has been developed in collaboration with Daimler.
The engine is making its Nissan debut in the Qashqai. It is available linked to a six-speed manual transmission and an all-new seven-speed Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT), both of which are front-wheel drive. It’s the first time a DCT has appeared in a volume Nissan model, and provides customers with a sporty and more direct dynamic experience, improved standing-start performance and smooth power delivery.
There are three versions of the new 1.3-litre engine – a 140 PS six-speed manual, a 160 PS six-speed manual and a 160 PS seven-speed DCT. Torque figures are 240 Nm for the low output, 260 Nm for the high output manual and 270 Nm for the DCT.
This enhanced petrol powertrain line-up sets a new standard for drivability in the Qashqai. Customers will notice improved response and acceleration through more power and torque, smoother and more linear power delivery, and a quieter driving experience. Service intervals are also extended.
In the Qashqai, the three new 1.3-litre powertrains directly replace three older ones – the 1.2-litre 115 PS manual and CVT, and the 1.6-litre 163 PS manual. All the new powertrains are compliant with the latest Euro 6d-Temp emissions standard.

All three powertrains are extremely competitive versus those available from other manufacturers, and in many cases the level of CO2 emissions is significantly better.
As well as offering reduced fuel consumption and lower CO2 emissions, the new engine provides a smoother response at low RPM, more vigorous acceleration and quicker / safer overtaking manoeuvres.
Improved efficiency comes thanks to a fundamental reworking of the engine design compared with previous petrol units. A gasoline particulate filter has been added, and areas of improvement include the fuel injection system, combustion chamber design, reduced friction and optimisation of the turbocharger. It also offers a quieter experience for occupants because of the higher torque at low RPM.
Cost of ownership for consumers is reduced thanks to lower maintenance costs over the lifetime of the engine. For example, service intervals have been extended from 12,000 km to 18,000 miles.
Compared to the outgoing 1.2-litre 115 PS manual, the new 1.3-litre 140 PS manual has an extra 25 PS and an extra 50 Nm of torque. In the Qashqai on 17-inch wheels, the CO2 emissions are 121 g/km (NEDC-BT), which is 8 g/km lower than previously (NEDC).
Comparing the same two powertrains, acceleration has also improved. While the 0-100 kph (0-62mph) time is almost identical (10.6 secs on the 1.2, versus 10.5 secs on the new 1.3) 4th gear acceleration from 80-100kph (50-62mph) has dropped from 5.7 to 4.5 seconds – an 18% improvement. In sixth gear at 100-120 kph (62-75mph) it’s even better – a 35% improvement offering much greater flexibility for the driver.
Compared to the outgoing 1.6-litre 163 PS manual, the new 1.3-litre 160 PS manual has an extra 20 Nm of torque. In the Qashqai on 17-inch wheels, the CO2 emissions are 121 g/km (NEDC-BT), which is 13 g/km lower than previously (NEDC).
The all-new DCT is a wet-clutch system which delivers a refined driving experience. It features electrical on-demand cooling and electro-mechanic gear actuation to improve efficiency. It provides clear benefits to customers – both private and fleet – compared to the outgoing CVT transmission on the Qashqai. The driver experiences an immediate gear shift with no power interruptions, while the absence of a torque converter creates a more direct driving feeling – so it’s more fun to drive.
Nissan’s new 1.3-litre petrol engine has been developed by the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, and has undergone 40,000 hours of tests and simulations. As part of that testing, the engine underwent 300,000km of validation driving in some of the world’s most extreme conditions.
By using the strength and resources of the Alliance, Nissan can deliver synergies which push the boundaries of what is possible from a petrol engine. The resulting 1.3-litre powertrain offers the highest levels of performance and refinement to customers, meets the strictest standards of reliability and durability, and reduces CO2 emissions.
The engine has been developed in collaboration with Daimler who will use on their Mercedes-Benz brand vehicles. The Alliance expects to build up to one million of these engines in the next fiscal year, and it will be fitted to more than 50% of all Qashqais sold.

Engine technology in detail
Cylinder head
The new engine’s compact form allows for more room under the bonnet, as well as reducing overall vehicle weight
It features a new triangular-shaped ‘delta’ cylinder head. The injectors are centrally installed for better combustion
The exhaust manifold is partially integrated into the cylinder head for more efficient cooling of exhaust gas and more efficient combustion, particularly at low engine speeds and high loads
A Gasoline Particulate Filter has been added. The filter destroys particles in the exhaust gases by trapping them in a microporous honeycomb structure that regenerates automatically at regular intervals
Bore spray coating
For the first time the Alliance is applying this technological innovation to a volume model’s engine
Using a plasma torch, a fine film of very hard steel is sprayed on the shafts of the cylinders to enhance heat conductivity during combustion
Aside from creating significant savings in mass, this technique greatly decreases uncontrolled detonations (clicking) in the engine and increases the compression rate for greater efficiency
Bore spray coating is responsible for a 1% reduction in consumption and emissions
Turbocharger
The turbocharger is now equipped with a motor-driven recirculating safety valve (a so-called ‘e-waste gate’). This replaces pneumatic valves in older engines
It means the turbo is more responsive, particularly at low engine speeds
This waste gate allows for optimum engine mapping without affecting drivability
Injectors
The injector nozzles features six holes for better fuel atomisation
They are fed by a common-rail at a high pressure of 250 bars. This compares with the outgoing 1.2-litre engine’s 200 bars
Variable valve timing with rocker arm
The valve train features a finger follower-type rocker arm with hydraulic guidance support, rather than tappets. This helps to reduce the internal friction and improve durability
The primary benefit is a reduction in internal friction and the promise of greater durability
The engine is more efficient thanks to twin independent variable camshaft timing for intake and exhaust

2019 Nissan 370Z Coupe: Overview
2019 Nissan 370Z Coupe features revised model lineup and two new Heritage Edition exterior color treatments – Deep Blue Pearl and Pearl White
Consolidated model lineup combines previous Touring and Sport Tech trims into new fully equipped Sport Touring grade
370Z Heritage Edition now offered in choice of three exterior colors: Magnetic Black and new Pearl White and Deep Blue Pearl – each with yellow interior trim and custom graphics
Auto-dimming rear view mirror with RearView Monitor now standard on all grades
Available in 370Z, 370Z Sport and 370Z Sport Touring models – along with 370Z NISMO and three 370Z Roadster models
Following major enhancements for the 2018 model year – including a revised exterior featuring dark headlight treatment, dark tinted rear combination lights, a blackout rear lower fascia and redesigned 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheel design – Nissan's iconic 370Z Coupe enters 2019 with two new color themes for the 370Z Heritage Edition, standard auto-dimming rearview mirror with RearView Monitor, and the combining of the previous Touring and Sport Tech trim levels into a new Sport Touring grade.
Also in 2018, the 370Z driving experience was enhanced through optimized acceleration and torque profile tuning. Without changing the engine's internal structure or components, engine performance was improved through careful refinement of Accelerator Pedal Opening (APO) and Throttle Valve Opening (TVO) angles. Manual transmission-equipped 370Z models added a motorsports-inspired EXEDY® high-performance clutch.
The 370Z Coupe Heritage Edition package, added for 2018, again offers a unique appearance and is now available in three exterior colors. The previous Magnetic Black Heritage Edition (gloss silver graphics and yellow interior trim) is joined by the new Deep Blue Pearl Heritage Edition (black outside mirrors, gloss silver decals, yellow interior trim) and the Pearl White Heritage Edition (black outside mirrors, gloss black decals, yellow interior trim). The previous Chicane Yellow Heritage Edition is no longer offered.
An Enhanced Driving Experience As in previous years, the 2019 370Z is built on the foundation of its balanced FM (Front Midship) platform, advanced 332-horsepower 3.7-liter VQ37VHR DOHC V6 engine with VVEL (Variable Valve Event and Lift) and choice of 6-speed manual transmission with SynchroRev Match® or a 7-speed automatic transmission with Adaptive Shift Control.
The 3.7-liter V6 engine's VVEL (Variable Valve Event and Lift) produces 332 horsepower @ 7,000 rpm and 270 lb-ft of torque @ 5,200 rpm.
Key to the outstanding performance is the VVEL system, which is able to optimize intake valve open/close movements, allowing the needed air to be sent promptly to the combustion chamber at the precisely optimized time. Since the VVEL system can adjust to open the valves slightly, it improves fuel efficiency by reducing camshaft friction and fuel waste. It also provides cleaner emissions by allowing for quicker warm-up of the catalyst and by stabilizing combustion when the engine is cool.
The engine is backed by a choice of two advanced transmissions. The close-ratio 6-speed manual includes an available synchronized downshift rev matching system (Sport and Sport Touring models), which allows drivers of any skill level to experience professional-like gearshift performance. The SynchroRev Match® function automatically controls and adjusts engine speed when shifting to the exact speed of the next gear position, essentially "blipping" the throttle to smooth out any up/down shifts. The system can be deactivated with a button next to the shifter for drivers who prefer to shift on their own.
The available 7-speed automatic with Downshift Rev Matching (DRM) and Adaptive Shift Control (ASC) is designed to offer quick, manual-like shifting when operated in manual mode with a target time of 0.5 seconds between shifts. With optimized torque converter lock-up logic, the 7-speed automatic feels very direct, like a manual transmission. The 7-speed's wide gear ratios offer improved fuel efficiency (versus a 5-speed automatic), while the Adaptive Shift Control is designed to adjust to the driver's driving style. Paddle shifters are standard on Sport and Sport Touring grades.
For 6-speed manual transmission-equipped 370Z models, driving response is enhanced with the addition of an EXEDY® high-performance clutch, which was developed in part through EXEDY's longstanding relationship with Nissan Motorsports. The clutch is designed to feature better launching (from start), acceleration and deceleration. By offering a large reduction in pedal force, and more control at half-clutch, drivers can concentrate more on steering and throttle operation, resulting in enhanced driving pleasure.
Fuel economy1 is estimated at 19 mpg city/26 mpg highway/22 mpg combined for the 7-speed automatic and 17 mpg city/26 mpg highway/20 mpg combined for the 6-speed manual transmission.
The available 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheels are designed to reduce vibration by improving wheel balance. A special cutting process improves the accuracy, allowing for a five-gram reduction in the wheel balance weight (versus the previous design). The split 5-spoke wheel design combines forged aluminum-alloy with black painted surfaces and bright finish accents. Bridgestone Potenza S007 high-performance tires are standard on 370Z Sport and 370Z Sport Touring trim levels.
The double-wishbone front suspension uses lightweight forged aluminum arms, a lightweight rigid aluminum-alloy cradle, and hollow construction stabilizer bar. The independent multi-link rear suspension is also stiffer and lighter than the previous generation design, with the rear cradle entirely integrated into a single part (no welding). "High response" shock absorbers are utilized on each corner, with ride comfort enhanced through reduced shock friction.
Steering is provided by a vehicle-speed-sensitive power-assisted rack-and-pinion design. Unwanted steering kickback and vibrations are reduced through use of a solenoid valve that acts like a damper when there is a harsh impact load. Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) is standard.
The 370Z includes standard 4-wheel vented disc brake system that includes Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist. The Sport and Sport Touring models add Nissan Sport Brakes with large diameter 14.0-inch front and 13.8-inch rear rotors (versus 12.6-inch front/ rear standard rotors) with 4-piston front and 2-piston rear aluminum red-finish calipers.
The 370Z features black-finished 18x8-inch front/18x9-inch 10-spoke lightweight aluminum-alloy wheels with 225/50R18 front/245/45R18 rear Yokohama ADVAN Sport high performance summer tires. The 370Z Sport and Sport Touring grades offer split 5-spoke 19x9-inch front/19x10-inch rear RAYS forged lightweight aluminum-alloy wheels with Bridgestone Potenza S007 245/40R19 front and 275/35R19 rear tires.
A Bold Exterior As in previous years, the 370Z Coupe's "dynamic motion" feel continues, with a dramatic roofline and a "low visual gravity." The sleek profile is defined by its upswept quarter window design that is echoed by the dynamic upward curvature in the lower rocker panel and the sense of the taut sheet metal molding itself around the wheels and frame.
High Intensity Discharge (HID) bi-functional xenon "boomerang shape" headlights with auto on/off feature and LED daytime running lamps are standard. The intense broad-shouldered rear shape is highlighted by the integration of the boomerang taillights and wide, flared rear fenders.
Attention to detail and functionality is evident throughout the exterior design, including a flashing side marker lamp/emblem (turn signal lamp not available on base 370Z). The rear fascia is accented by a red rear center reflector. A front chin spoiler and rear spoiler are standard on Sport and Sport Touring grades.
The coefficient of drag is 0.30 for the 370Z model and 0.29 for the Sport and Sport Touring grades. The 370Z Sport and Sport Touring grades also feature zero front lift and zero rear lift, thanks to extensive aerodynamics efforts – including an "inverse area" front bumper design that allows a smooth flow of air to the sides of the vehicle, while the rear design maximizes the control of air flow from the roof to the rear hatch.
Underlying the aggressive appearance of the 370Z Coupe is a light, highly rigid structure designed for enhanced performance. The FM platform provides a refined base for the well-proportioned body – which includes a 100.4-inch wheelbase, 167.5-inch overall length, 72.6-inch width and 51.8-inch height – giving it a classic sports car look and feel.
The body features aluminum door panels, along with an all-aluminum hood and an aluminum hatch. A front suspension cradle, rear structural reinforcements and an underbody "V-bar" are designed to help reduce front and rear lateral bending (versus the previous generation design). The design also uses a carbon fiber composite radiator housing and strengthened rear fender and hatch areas. The rear hatchback also features an electronic release, with the opening switch mounted on the center console between the cupholder and shifter lever.
Six other exterior colors are available: Pearl White, Brilliant Silver, Magnetic Black, Gun Metallic, Deep Blue Pearl and Passion Red. The Passion Red paint process uses a high brightness aluminum pigment in the base coat and Nano-pigment tinted clear coat to give it a vivid, jewel-like red color that looks different depending on the viewing angle.
A Driver-Oriented Cockpit The 370Z Coupe interior remains essentially unchanged for 2019. It retains the traditional 2-seat sports car layout – built around a deeply scooped instrument panel with a full-length center console separating the driver and passenger's seat. The design focus incorporates a "layer concept," with an information layer, an operation layer and a holding layer.
The information layer provides good visibility with easy access to all key data. The gauges are attached to the steering column, so the driver doesn't have to choose between a preferred steering wheel position and visibility of the gauges. The large upper steering wheel opening in front of the gauges is designed to provide a good view of the readouts.
The instrument panel retains the traditional 3-pod cluster with oil temperature, voltmeter and clock, while the speedometer and tachometer include an "initial sweep" function, coming alive when the Z® is first started.
The operation layer includes the steering wheel, shifter and switchgear. The steering wheel is an "oval" 3-spoke design, which offers baseball-style stitching and large thumb grips and palm rest areas for improved feel on long drives. The surface of the leather-wrapped wheel is "shaved" to provide a more kidney-like shape to better fit in the hand.
The holding layer includes the seats, kneepads and door trim support. The driver's seat is uniquely different from the passenger's seat, with lower seat cushion cutouts on the sides where the thighs rest – allowing the driver to push on the pedals without the seat fighting them. The seat frame is constructed to help hold the driver in place during cornering. Both the driver and passenger's seats are structured with an anti-slip material in the main seating surface. The sporty black woven cloth seats feature standard 8-way driver's/4-way passenger manual adjustments.
Standard interior comfort and convenience features include Nissan Intelligent Key® with Push Button Start, power windows with one-touch auto up/down feature, power door locks with auto-lock feature, a center console box with a non-intrusive cover design, automatic climate control, rear window defroster with timer, two 12-volt power outlets, three cupholders, dual overhead map lights, Bluetooth® Hands-free Phone System and an AM/FM/CD/AUX 6-speaker (versus the previous 4-speakers) audio system with illuminated steering wheel-mounted controls. An auto-dimming mirror with RearView Monitor is now standard on all 2019 370Z models.
The Sport Touring model adds standard 4-way power adjustable heated sport seats with adjustable lumbar support, glove box damper, heated outside sideview mirrors, side turn signal lamp, aluminum-trimmed pedals and retractable cargo cover – along with black leather-appointed and synthetic suede seating and synthetic suede door panel inserts.
The Sport Touring models also include the Nissan Hard Drive Navigation System with 7.0-inch VGA touch-sensitive display, NavTraffic® with Real-Time Traffic Information and NavWeather™ (SiriusXM® subscription required, sold separately) – along with SiriusXM® Satellite Radio (SiriusXM® subscription required, sold separately), Streaming audio via Bluetooth® and HomeLink® Universal Transceiver.
The Sport and Sport Touring models offer a Bose® audio system with eight speakers (includes dual subwoofers), Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) and Active Sound Enhancement (ASE) systems as standard. The ANC system generates canceling sound to help remove undesirable low frequency engine noise while preserving invigorating sounds of engine performance, providing a more "pure" sound. The system is also utilized on the Nissan GT-R. ASE enhances natural engine sounds to help bolster the driver's acceleration experience.
The long list of standard safety and security features includes the Nissan Advanced Air Bag System (AABS) with dual-stage supplemental front air bags with seat belt sensors and occupant classification sensor; front seat-mounted side impact supplemental air bags; roof-mounted curtain side-impact supplemental air bags; seat belts with pretensioners and load limiters, Active Head Restraints, Zone Body Construction with front and rear crumple zones, Nissan Vehicle Immobilizer System, Vehicle Security System and Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).
The 370Z Heritage Edition For 370Z Coupe buyers wanting to stand out from the crowd even further, a Heritage Edition package is offered on the base 370Z grade, the best-selling and most affordable trim level. The Heritage Edition is equipped with a standard 332-horsepower 3.7-liter DOHC V6 engine and a choice of 6-speed manual or 7-speed automatic transmission.
For 2019, the Heritage Edition is offered in three exterior colors. The new White Pearl Heritage Edition features black outside mirrors, gloss black graphics and yellow interior trim. The new Deep Blue Pearl Heritage Edition includes black outside mirrors, gloss silver decals and yellow interior trim. The Magnetic Black Heritage Edition includes gloss silver graphics and yellow interior trim.
Three Well-Equipped models The 2019 370Z Coupe is offered in three well-equipped models: 370Z (manual and automatic transmissions, 370Z Sport (manual transmission only) and 370Z Sport Touring (manual and automatic transmissions).
Also available is the 370Z NISMO model with unique motorsports-inspired exterior, interior and powertrain treatments – including Recaro leather-appointed seats, 19-inch NISMO super-light forged wheels and an additional 18 horsepower (350 hp total).
In addition, the 370Z Roadster provides all the performance and style of the 370Z Coupe, but in an advanced soft-top convertible design. There are three available models: 370Z Roadster, 370Z Touring Roadster and 370Z Sport Touring Roadster.
Set for fall 2018 U.S. launch, Altima sets new standard for Nissan sedan design, offering ProPILOT Assist technology and two new engines. It’s also the first Nissan sedan in the U.S. available with Intelligent All-Wheel Drive
Nissan is bringing excitement back to the mid-size sedan segment with the global launch of the 2019 Nissan Altima. The all-new, sixth-generation Altima features:
Advanced Nissan Intelligent Mobility safety and driving aid technologies, including ProPILOT Assist and introducing Safety Shield 360 with Rear Automatic Braking
Enhanced driving performance, including available Intelligent All-Wheel Drive
Two new engines, including the company's world's first production-ready Variable Compression Turbo
Expressive design with lower, wider and more athletic proportions
New open, airy premium uplifting interior design
"The new Altima follows the new Nissan LEAF in embodying the vision of Nissan Intelligent Mobility, making our cars more desirable by re-defining how they're driven, powered and integrated into society," said José Muñoz, chief performance officer, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd.
The 2019 Altima will be available in five grade levels, along with a limited-production launch edition, when it goes on sale at Nissan dealers in the United States in fall 2018. The all-new Altima will also be available in an expanded number of global markets in the coming years.
"Our goal with the all-new Altima is to re-energize the sedan segment – in terms of design, driving feel and in making advanced technologies available and affordable for everyone," added Muñoz. "We want to energize drivers, helping make their lives safer, less stressful and more exciting."
Nissan Intelligent Mobility: ProPILOT Assist leads the way
When it comes to enhancing driving enjoyment, the 2019 Altima stands alone with Nissan's advanced ProPILOT Assist1. Unique in the class, ProPILOT Assist eases driver workload by reducing the amount of driver acceleration, steering and braking input under certain driving conditions, such as single-lane highway driving.
ProPILOT Assist is the foundation for the autonomous vehicles of the future, helping drivers stay centered in the lane, navigate stop-and-go traffic, maintain a set vehicle speed and maintain a set distance to the vehicle ahead. And, it's all done with a simple two-button operation. To activate the system, the driver simply pushes the blue ProPILOT Assist ON button, then sets the Intelligent Cruise Control when the desired speed is reached, as with a normal advanced cruise control system.
ProPILOT Assist is designed to be more intuitive and user-friendly compared with other driver-assist technologies. It can potentially help lessen driver fatigue and create a more confident driving experience – especially for drivers who experience heavy highway traffic on a daily basis.
It utilizes a forward-facing camera, forward-facing radar, sensors and an electronic control module to help the driver stay in the center of the driving lane and to maintain vehicle speed (set by the driver) or help maintain a gap to the preceding vehicle if the vehicle speed drops below the driver-set speed. It also can slow the vehicle to a complete stop and hold the vehicle during traffic jam conditions.
ProPILOT Assist is standard on the 2019 Altima SV, SL and Platinum grades.
"Adding ProPILOT Assist to the 2019 Altima continues our approach of making the most advanced technologies available to the widest number of potential buyers, rather than saving the best for the most exclusive models," added Muñoz. "This 'democratization' of advanced features also applies to Altima's many other available safety and driving assistance technologies."
Along with ProPILOT Assist, also new for 2019 is Rear Automatic Braking (RR-AB)2, which helps the driver detect stationary objects when backing up, and if necessary applies the brakes to help avoid a collision. When an object is detected while driving the vehicle in reverse at low speed, the system warns the driver with visual and audible warnings. If the driver's braking is not sufficient and there is still a risk of a collision, the system issues second visual and audible warnings and applies harder braking immediately before the potential collision. The new Rear Automatic Braking system is standard on Altima SV, SL and Platinum grades.
The range of safety and convenience features includes standard Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), Intelligent Forward Collision Warning (I-FCW) and Intelligent Driver Alertness (I-DA)3 on all grades. Intelligent Around View Monitor (I-AVM) is standard on the Altima Platinum.
The addition of Rear Automatic Braking to Nissan Safety Shield creates Safety Shield 360, which provides front, side and rear safety monitoring and intervention technologies, under the umbrella of the Nissan Intelligent Mobility strategy. Safety Shield 360 includes Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Rear Automatic Braking, Lane Departure Warning (LDW), radar-based Blind Spot Warning (BSW), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) and High Beam Assist (HBA).
A new Traffic Sign Recognition system provides Altima drivers with the most recent speed limit information detected by a camera unit located on the windshield in front of the inside rearview mirror. The information from detected signs is displayed in the Advanced Drive Assist Display. In vehicles equipped with navigation, the speed limit display is based on a combination of navigation system data and camera recognition.
First-ever Altima AWD
In response to the desires of buyers in key northern U.S. market regions, Intelligent All-Wheel Drive will be offered for the first time ever on the Altima. The new AWD models are projected to account for a significant share of Altima U.S. sales in these regions.
"When we look at how Altima is going to shake up the segment, all-wheel drive is a key element. Altima will be the only one to offer it of the top three best-selling midsize sedans," said Muñoz. "The lack of available all-wheel drive has also been a factor in buyers who prefer sedans switching to compact SUVs."
The AWD system is available in all trim levels equipped with the 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine. The system uses an advanced torque split control strategy that automatically redistributes torque to the wheels (0:100 front up to 50:50 front-to-rear) according to road and driving conditions. In addition, cooperative control between the AWD torque distribution, brake limited slip differential and Hill Start Assist optimizes performance on hills starts and rough roads – adding to the sense of confidence and driving pleasure under a range of driving scenarios.
World's first production Variable Compression Turbo engine
Replacing the previous-generation Altima's 3.5-liter V6 engine is the world's first production-ready variable compression turbo inline 4-cylinder – which generates the performance of some V6 gasoline engines but with 4-cylinder level fuel economy.
Designated as the VC-Turbo, the new technology continuously transforms the engine characteristics, providing both dynamic and efficient performance. The VC-Turbo recently launched as a world's first technology in the all-new INFINITI QX50 crossover.
The VC-Turbo has been in development for 20 years. It seamlessly changes its compression ratio between 8:1 (for high performance) and 14:1 (for high efficiency) – with an advanced multi-link system continuously raising or lowering the pistons' reach to transform the compression ratio. A high compression ratio gives greater efficiency, but in certain applications poses the risk of premature combustion (knocking). A low compression ratio allows for greater power and torque, and avoids knocking.
The multi-link components are manufactured in high-carbon steel alloy. Compared with the previous 3.5-liter V6 engine, the 2.0-liter VC-Turbo requires less space in the engine bay. The engine delivers 248 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque (premium fuel).
The VC-Turbo engine utilizes both multi-point injection and direct injection to balance efficiency and power in all conditions. The Direct Injection Gasoline (DIG™) system improves combustion efficiency and performance, and enables the engine to avoid knocking at higher compression ratios, while the multi-point injection mixes fuel and air earlier, enabling complete combustion in the chamber for greater efficiency at low engine loads. The engine also contributes to lower NVH and improved emissions (versus the previous 3.5-liter V6). The VC-Turbo engine is assembled in Japan.
Altimas equipped with the VC-Turbo (SR VC-Turbo and Platinum VC-Turbo grades) include a meter in the standard 7.0-inch Advanced Drive Assist Display so the driver can see, as well as feel, the control state of this world-first technology while driving.
In terms of fuel economy4, the new 2.0-liter VC-Turbo engine is projected to have a double-digit percentage increase in highway mpg for the front-wheel drive models.
"With the VC-Turbo, the driver balances the engine character through acceleration pedal operation alone. This 'two engines in one' is another way Altima stands far apart from all other vehicles in the segment," said Muñoz.
New standard 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine
Reflecting the Altima's importance to the Nissan brand, the company is also making its biggest investment ever in a new model powertrain development – introducing for the first time two completely new engines for one model change.
Standard on all grade levels is the new 2.5-liter DOHC inline 4-cylinder direct injection engine, which is rated at 188 horsepower (versus the previous 2.5-liter's 179 hp) and 180 lb-ft of torque (versus the previous 177 lb-ft) and features 80% new or redesigned parts.
More than just the gains in horsepower and torque, the new engine offers improvements in noise, vibration and harshness, along with enhanced fuel economy and cleaner emissions. It also has a lower profile through adoption of a "reverse" cylinder head with integrated exhaust manifold and low engine mounting into the new platform's engine bay for quieter operation.
Key changes to the engine's design include a thermal-insulated resin intake port, Direct Injection Gasoline (DIG™) system, variable tumble control valve, mirror bore cylinder coating, variable displacement oil pump, intake e-VTC and cooled external EGR. The new 2.5-liter engine is assembled in Decherd, Tennessee.
"The development of the new 2.5-liter engine started with reviewing the basic specifications one by one, such as the combustion chamber design. The result is an enhanced combination of high output and low fuel consumption versus the previous engine – with the bonus of improved NVH and front-end styling flexibility," said Muñoz.
All 2019 Altima models, including both engine configurations, come equipped with a standard Xtronic transmission. For 2019, the Xtronic transmission receives an expanded lock-up area for improved efficiency. Paddle shifters are available with the Altima SR grade.
Enhanced dynamic performance and chassis control
Along with the all-weather traction offered by the new all-wheel-drive system, all 2019 Altimas benefit from a range of enhanced suspension, steering and chassis control systems. Key suspension changes include the first Altima application of monotube rear shocks, added suspension reinforcements to improve vehicle response without impacting harshness, and suspension geometry adjustments to improve steering feedback.
The steering system has been upgraded to a new dual-pinion electric power steering design (DP-EPS), which enhances steering feel performance and reduces steering system noise. Steering effort is reduced at low speeds for ease of driving, and effort is increased at higher speeds for improved feedback and control.
The 2019 Altima includes a new, advanced Integrated Dynamics Module (IDM). It includes three unique systems – Intelligent Ride Control, Intelligent Trace Control and Vehicle Dynamics Control – similar to those found on the flagship Nissan Maxima sedan.
Three wheel and tire size combinations are available – 16-inch, 17-inch and, for the first time, 19-inch. The Altima SR grade, as in the previous generation Altima, features unique suspension and chassis tuning for a sportier ride and handling.
"The goal in the chassis development is to provide a more comfortable, controlled and confident driving experience – not just for the higher grades but for every 2019 Altima," said Muñoz. "Between the engine improvements, isolation of noise and vibrations, tighter suspension and increased seat support, Altima absolutely feels like a class above."
Sporty exterior, premium interior
The all-new Altima takes its inspiration from the award-winning Nissan Vmotion 2.0 concept, which debuted at the 2017 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Like the show car, the production Altima attracts immediate attention with its athletic stance and proportions – lower, wider and more dynamic than previous generations, thanks in part to new platform packaging and the use of two new low-profile engine designs.
"Altima has been the face of Nissan in the United States, its largest market, for many years. We knew we had to elevate the appearance of the new-generation Altima, so the Vmotion 2.0 gave us the blueprint moving forward with the production model," said Alfonso Albaisa, senior vice president, global design, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd.
Compared with the previous generation, the new Altima is 1.1 inches lower in height, 1.0 inches longer in length and 0.9 inches wider – while also featuring a smaller front overhang thanks a 1.9-inch longer wheelbase and the rear wheels being pushed farther to the corners. The result is a dramatically sleeker yet more sophisticated look. The coefficient of drag is just 0.26.
"Through clever packaging, we were able to push the hood and cowl downward, while also adding larger available 19-inch wheels and tires that really help the vehicle's stance," said Albaisa. "This allowed us to give it a more linear, tailored feel that's emphasized by the sharp horizontal lines and signature Nissan design cues such as the V-motion grille and streamlined boomerang lights."
Available exterior elements include the expressive V-motion grille with dark chrome finish, LED projector headlights with signature Daytime Running Lights, LED fog lights, floating roof with slim pillars and single panel moonroof. A range of available exterior colors –including a deep-tinted Scarlet Ember red that changes hue with the light, and a new vibrant Sunset Drift orange with unique reflective pigment – help bring out the exterior's sculptural details and highlights.
Inside, the 2019 Altima interior offers a near-luxury feel in both design and materials – marked by the lightweight, layered and more horizontal "gliding wing" instrument panel and high-contrast colors and trim.
"The new Altima interior has a real 'wow' factor when you open the doors – sending the message that this is not your typical sedan," added Albaisa. "The idea is to engage the driver and passengers both visually and tactilely." A range of premium interior colors and trim accents are available depending on grade level."
The uplifting interior design also offers a high level of comfort and convenience amenities and connectivity features are offered – including standard 7.0-inch Advanced Drive Assist Display, enhanced NASA-inspired Zero Gravity seat design with dual-density foam and added bolstering for improved holding and support, available perforated leather-appointed seat inserts, available remote engine start with Intelligent Climate Control and new available 8-way driver's seat with memory.
Every 2019 Altima also comes equipped with standard NissanConnectSM featuring Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™, with 8-inch multi-touch color display, Bluetooth® Hands-free Phone System and Streaming audio via Bluetooth®, Hands-free Text Messaging Assistant and Siri Eyes Free/Google Assistant™ Voice Recognition. The system also offers available Apple Watch and Android Wear compatibility through the NissanConnect Services app – allowing remote engine start and stop, remote lock/unlock valet alert and more – along with Amazon Alexa Skill compatibility.
The available NissanConnect Navigation and Services include a number of new functions such as over-the-air updates, door-to-door navigation, real-time Premium Traffic updates and a Bluetooth® Device Manager with easy customization features.
"The all-new Altima features the next generation of Nissan connectivity, combining seamless connectivity between home, work and the vehicle, an intuitive interface and over-the-air updates with automatic update notifications," said Muñoz. "And, of course, both Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ come standard – which not every sedan in the segment even makes available."
The new Altima's selection of audio and infotainment choices include a Bose® Premium Audio system with nine speakers, including a new digital amplifier with eight channels of custom equalization. Active Noise Cancellation is also available.
A range of advanced models
The 2019 Altima will be offered in a range of trim levels – S, SR, SV, SL and Platinum. All five come equipped with the standard 2.5-liter engine and are available with Intelligent All-Wheel Drive. In addition, Altima SR and Platinum grades are available with the advanced 2.0-liter VC-Turbo engine (front-wheel drive only).
